Oxytocin is a neuropeptide associated with both psychological and somatic processes like parturition and social bonding. Although oxytocin homologs have been identified in many species, the evolutionary timeline of the entire oxytocin signaling gene pathway has yet to be described. Using protein sequence similarity searches, microsynteny, and phylostratigraphy, we assigned the genes supporting the oxytocin pathway to different phylostrata based on when we found they likely arose in evolution.

Introduction: Supervised exercise training is among the first-line therapies for patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD). Current recommendations for exercise include guidance focusing on claudication pain, programme and session duration, and frequency. However, no guidance is offered regarding exercise training intensity.

Casting is an effective adjunctive treatment, which increases the effects of botulinum toxin on patients with spasticity. The evidence for casting as an adjunctive therapy post-botulinum toxin has been well documented in the literature. However, standardized casting protocols are lacking, with no published descriptions of upper limb casting application post-botulinum toxin injection for spasticity.

The macroscopic appearance of a tumor such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) may be defined as its phenotype which is dictated by its genotype. Therefore, macroscopic characteristics of HCC are unlikely random but rather reflect genomic traits of cancer, presumably acting as a valuable source of information that can be retrieved and exploited to infer prognosis. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the available data on the prognostic value of macroscopic characterization in HCC.

Introduction: The field of neurosurgery faces challenges with the increasing involvement of other medical specialties in areas traditionally led by neurosurgeons. This paper examines the implications of this development for neurosurgical practice and patient care, with a focus on specialized areas like pain management, peripheral nerve surgery, and stereotactic radiosurgery.
Research Question: To assess the implications of the expanded scope of other specialties for neurosurgical practice and to consider the response of the EANS Frontiers in Neurosurgery Committee to these challenges.

Background: Pathogen inactivation treatment (PIT) has been shown to alter platelet function, phenotype, morphology and to induce a faster aging of platelet concentrates (PCs). Key pieces of information are still missing to understand the impacts of PITs at the cellular level.
Objectives: This study investigated the impact of amotosalen/UVA on PCs, from a post-translational modifications (PTM) point of view.

The Head and Neck Cancer International Group (HNCIG) has undertaken an international modified Delphi process to reach consensus on the essential data variables to be included in a minimum database for HNC research. Endorsed by 19 research organisations representing 34 countries, these recommendations provide the framework to facilitate and harmonise data collection and sharing for HNC research. These variables have also been incorporated into a ready to use downloadable HNCIG minimum database, available from the HNCIG website.

DNA methylation analysis based on supervised machine learning algorithms with static reference data, allowing diagnostic tumour typing with unprecedented precision, has quickly become a new standard of care. Whereas genome-wide diagnostic methylation profiling is mostly performed on microarrays, an increasing number of institutions additionally employ nanopore sequencing as a faster alternative. In addition, methylation-specific parallel sequencing can generate methylation and genomic copy number data.

The progression of type C HE is associated with changes in brain metabolite concentrations measured by H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), most noticeably a strong increase in glutamine to detoxify brain ammonia. In addition, alterations of brain cellular architecture have been measured by histology in a rat model of type C HE.

Background: Clinicians diagnosing autism rely on diagnostic criteria and instruments in combination with an implicit knowledge based on clinical expertise of the specific signs and presentations associated with the condition. This implicit knowledge influences how diagnostic criteria are interpreted, but it cannot be directly observed. Instead, insight into clinicians' understanding of autism can be gained by investigating their diagnostic certainty.

Background: Oesophageal cancer, in particular adenocarcinoma, has a strong male predominance. However, the impact of patient sex on operative and oncologic outcomes and recovery of health-related quality of life is poorly documented, and was the focus of this large multicentre cohort study.
Methods: All consecutive patients who underwent oncological oesophagectomy from 2009 to 2015 in the 20 European iNvestigation of SUrveillance after Resection for Esophageal cancer study group centres were assessed.

Background: Few studies have assessed enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) in liver surgery for cirrhotic patients. The present meta-analysis assessed the impact of ERAS pathways on outcomes after liver surgery in cirrhotic patients compared to standard care.
Methods: A literature search was performed on PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is emerging as a significant public health challenge in Africa, with predictions indicating a tripling in incidence by 2050. The diagnosis of AD on the African continent is notably difficult, leading to late detection that severely limits treatment options and significantly impacts the quality of life for patients and their families.
Summary: This review focuses on the potential of high-sensitivity specific blood biomarkers as promising tools for improving AD diagnosis and management globally, particularly in Africa.

The metrics used for assessing image quality in computed tomography (CT) do not integrate the influence of temporal resolution. A shortcoming in the assessment of image quality for imaging protocols where motion blur can therefore occur. We developed a method to calculate the temporal resolution of standard CT protocols and introduced a specific spatiotemporal formulation of the non-prewhitening with eye filter (NPWE) model observer to assess the detectability of moving objects as a function of their speed.

The malignant microenvironment plays a major role in the development of resistance to therapies and the occurrence of relapses in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). We previously showed that interactions of AML blasts with bone marrow macrophages (MΦ) shift their polarization towards a protumoral (M2-like) phenotype, promoting drug resistance; we demonstrated that inhibiting the colony-stimulating factor-1 receptor (CSF1R) repolarizes MΦ towards an antitumoral (M1-like) phenotype and that other factors may be involved. We investigated here macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) as a target in AML blast survival and protumoral interactions with MΦ.
