The aim of this study was to evaluate if high barrier recyclable material polyethylene/ethylene vinyl alcohol (PE/EVOH) can be an alternative non-recyclable polyamides (PA)/PE laminate and also if high barrier is required or recyclable PE material with low barrier properties is good enough to maintain the quality of thermally processed mashed potato and ground carrot. The oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of the PA/PE and PE films decreased after heat treatment, while no change was observed for PE/EVOH films. Food contact did not impact the OTR of PA/PE and PE/EVOH films, while the OTR of PE films decreased.

Sensitive and specific antemortem diagnostic tests are a prerequisite for effective management of chronic wasting disease (CWD). Paired with readily accessible samples that accurately reflect CWD status, the real-time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QuIC) assay has the potential to enable more effective CWD surveillance and interventions. We evaluated the feasibility of RT-QuIC as a CWD diagnostic test using 6-mm ear tissue biopsies from elk (Cervus canadensis).

Vessel walls play a crucial role in many inflammatory vascular diseases. Vessel wall imaging (VWI) using mangnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the few methods by which vessel walls and inflammation can be visualized noninvasively, in vivo, and without ionizing radiation. VWI is based on black-blood (BB) MRI, where the signal from flowing blood is suppressed and contrast agent accumulation in the (inflamed) vessel wall is highlighted.

Background: Lifestyle interventions for weight loss are generally ineffective in achieving clinically meaningful long-term reductions in body weight and may contribute to negative behavior such as weight cycling or disordered eating. Negative focus on high weight may also contribute to weight stigma. Weight stigma includes negative attitudes and discriminatory behavior toward people with big bodies and can result in psychological stress and unfavorable health outcomes.

Genomic alterations of are common and associated with adverse clinical features in B-ALL. The relationship between the type of alteration, disease subtype and outcome are incompletely understood. Leukemia subtype and genomic alterations were determined using transcriptome and genomic sequencing and SNP microarray in 688 pediatric patients with B-ALL in St.

Sex chromosome trisomies (SCTs) are a group of genetic disorders characterized by presence of a supernumerary sex chromosome, resulting in karyotypes other than XX or XY. These include XXX (Trisomy X), XXY (Klinefelter syndrome), and XYY (Jacobs syndrome). Sex chromosome trisomies have been linked to increased risk for psychopathology; however, this relationship warrants additional research.

Background: Despite evidence demonstrating that influenza vaccination is associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality in individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM), vaccine uptake remains suboptimal.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of electronically delivered nudges on influenza vaccine uptake according to the presence of DM status versus other chronic diseases.
Methods: NUDGE-FLU-CHRONIC was a nationwide, randomized, pragmatic implementation trial among younger and middle-aged (18-64 years) Danish citizens with chronic disease during the 2023/2024 influenza season.

Brain-wide association studies (BWAS) are a fundamental tool in discovering brain-behaviour associations. Several recent studies have shown that thousands of study participants are required for good replicability of BWAS. Here we performed analyses and meta-analyses of a robust effect size index using 63 longitudinal and cross-sectional MRI studies from the Lifespan Brain Chart Consortium (77,695 total scans) to demonstrate that optimizing study design is critical for increasing standardized effect sizes and replicability in BWAS.

Background And Objectives: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a CNS disease, characterized by demyelination, inflammation, and neurodegeneration. Recent advances in technology allow measurement of the axonal damage marker neurofilament light chain in peripheral blood. Two studies have shown that patients with MS have elevated neurofilament light levels before their first symptom, but longitudinal studies are lacking.

Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) elimination requires treating people who use drugs (PWUD), yet fewer than 10% of PWUD in the United States access HCV treatment and access is especially limited in rural communities.
Methods: We randomized PWUD with HCV viremia and past 90-day injection drug or non-prescribed opioid use in seven rural Oregon counties to peer-assisted telemedicine HCV treatment (TeleHCV) versus peer-assisted referral to local providers (enhanced usual care; EUC). Peers supported screening and pre-treatment laboratory evaluation for all participants and facilitated telemedicine visits, medication delivery, and adherence for TeleHCV participants.

Cancer is a significant global health concern, responsible for mortality and morbidity of individuals. It is characterized by uncontrolled cellular growth, tumor formation, and potential metastasis. The immune system is pivotal in recognizing and eliminating cancerous cells, with immune cells such as T cells, B cells, natural killer cells (NK), and dendritic cells playing critical roles.

To define the morphologic pattern of pediatric hand burns as visualized via optical coherence tomography (OCT) and dynamic OCT (D-OCT). We designed a scoring system to assess the depths of burn wounds on pediatric hands and tested this score in our cohort of children with burn injuries to the hand. Overall, 67 hand burns in 48 children (0-15 years) were prospectively examined.

Background: Silicone leakage from breast implants is a concern with potential implications for patient health. This study aimed to quantify and model silicone leakage from implants to the breast implant capsule and to investigate whether silicone cohesiveness affected the silicone leakage rate.
Methods: Silicone content in the breast implant capsule was quantified histologically by measuring the area of silicone deposits.

Cumulative costs of reproduction are predicted by life-history theories of aging, but empirical support for cumulative costs of reproduction in ungulates is limited. Examinations of the relationship between previous reproductive effort and future reproductive output are often limited to successive years. We analyzed pregnancy status, lactation duration, and age class of Elk () in Utah, United States, from 2019 to 2022 to better understand the relationship between previous reproductive effort and future reproductive output, particularly in nonsuccessive years.

Free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC) is now a globally established norm and is a condition of equitable engagement with Indigenous peoples and local communities in biodiversity conservation. However, implementation is frequently questioned in terms of its efficacy in top-down-driven governance contexts. Local officials represent core voices often absent from mainstream discourse.

Purpose: Upper airway stimulation (UAS) is a treatment option for moderate-to-severe OSA, in which electrical stimulation is applied to the hypoglossal nerve via an electrode cuff. In this study, we assess the effect of electrode cuff positioning on UAS outcomes, in particular device adherence.
Methods: Patients at a single academic institution who met the Food and Drug Administration criteria for UAS between 2016 and 2021 were included.
Unlabelled: Vitamin D status has long been related to falls risk. In this planned secondary analysis of a vitamin supplementation trial in postmenopausal women, standardized 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration up to 60 ng/mL was not associated with increased falls. Women with 25(OH)D ≥ 60 ng/mL had higher odds of ≥ 2 falls.

Background: Intestinal inflammation is a common factor in ~70% of patients diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis. The TNF∆ARE+/- mouse overexpresses TNFα and spontaneously develops ileitis after weaning. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of ileitis and TNFα overexpression on hepatic injury, fibrosis, inflammation, and bile acid homeostasis.
