Effect of Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation in Chronic Low Back Pain: A Pilot Study.

: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a common condition with limited long-term treatment options. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has shown potential for pain improvement, but its use in CLBP remains underexplored. Our aim was to evaluate the efficacy, feasibility and tolerability of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) in reducing pain and improving functional outcomes in CLBP patients.

Enhancing therapeutic reasoning: key insights and recommendations for education in prescribing.

Background: Despite efforts to improve undergraduate clinical pharmacology & therapeutics (CPT) education, prescribing errors are still made regularly. To improve CPT education and daily prescribing, it is crucial to understand how therapeutic reasoning works. Therefore, the aim of this study was to gain insight into the therapeutic reasoning process.

Use of resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) in a multidisciplinary approach for management of traumatic haemorrhagic shock: 10-year retrospective experience from a French level 1 trauma centre.

Background: The present study investigated an institutional multidisciplinary strategy for managing traumatic haemorrhagic shock by integrating the placement of REBOA (resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta) by anaesthesiologist-intensivists.

Methods: All severe trauma patients who received percutaneous REBOA placement between January 2013 and December 2022 in our level 1 trauma centre were retrospectively analysed. The data collected included the clinical context, indications and location of REBOA, durations of aortic occlusion (AO), choice of haemostatic procedures and surgical teams, and specific complications.

From pain level to pain experience: redefining acute pain assessment to enhance understanding of chronic postsurgical pain.

Background: Chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) significantly impairs quality of life and poses a substantial healthcare burden, affecting up to a quarter of patients undergoing surgery. Although acute pain is recognised as a predictor for CPSP development, the role of patient experience remains underexplored. This study examines the predictive value of patient experience alongside traditional risk factors for CPSP after orthopaedic surgery.

Sex differences in muscle-invasive bladder cancers: A study of a French regional population.

Objectives: Although men have a higher risk of developing a bladder cancer, women appear to have a poorer prognosis and a more advanced stage at diagnosis. We performed a retrospective population-based study on muscle invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) using data from a cancer registry in a French department to compare overall and specific survival data according to sex.

Material And Methods: We included all patients living in the department of Hérault and diagnosed with MIBC between January 1, 2017 and December 12, 2019.

Plantar Compartment Block Improves Enhanced Recovery after Hallux Valgus Surgery: A Randomized, Comparative, Double-blind Study.

Background: Walking ability is a key factor in enhanced recovery after foot ambulatory surgery. Plantar compartment block offers an analgesic alternative to popliteal sciatic nerve block (PSNB) for hallux valgus surgery. The objective of this study was to compare these two regional anesthesia strategies on patients' ability to recover a painless unaided walk.

The question of screening organ donors for hepatitis e virus: a case report of transmission by kidney transplantation in France and a review of the literature.

Background: Hepatitis E is a potentially serious infection in organ recipients, with an estimated two-thirds of cases becoming chronic, and with a subsequent risk of cirrhosis and death. In Europe, transmission occurs most often through the consumption of raw or undercooked pork, more rarely through blood transfusion, but also after solid organ transplantation. Here we describe a case of Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection transmitted following kidney transplantation and review the literature describing cases of HEV infection transmitted by solid organ transplantation.

Background: Percutaneous needle tenotomies constitute a promising approach that enables direct access to tendons through minimally invasive interventions. They can be performed rapidly without need for large incisions or general anaesthesia. However, the reported procedures are heterogeneous and currently conducted without guidelines.

Background: Reporting and analysis of adverse events (AE) is associated with improved health system learning, quality outcomes, and patient safety. Manual text analysis is time-consuming, costly, and prone to human errors. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic had a global impact on people life, notably because of lockdown periods. This could particularly affected patients suffering from hip fracture, who could have been more isolated during these periods. We aim at evaluating the impact of the COVID-19 period (including lockdown periods) on quality of life (QOL) in older adult patients 90 days after a surgery for a hip fracture.

Intramedullary nailing of humeral shaft fractures: percutaneous nailing in the lateral position through the Neviaser approach is a reliable technique.

Background: Displaced humeral shaft fractures are frequently treated by osteosynthesis in the active patient. We aimed to evaluate the results of intramedullary nailing (IMN) in the lateral position with the Neviaser approach and to compare them with those from IMN nailing in the standard position and conventional approach.

Methods: In the retrospectively evaluated, single-center study, we compared 20 cases of long IMN for fractures of the proximal or middle third of the humerus shaft (Multilock; Synthes Laboratory) in the lateral position with the percutaneous Neviaser approach with 52 cases of IMN in the standard position.

Patients And Methods: In this analysis of a multicenter prospective study, we combined conventional kidney function variables with serial measurements of urine (tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2 [TIMP-2])* (insulin-like growth factor-binding protein [IGFBP7]) at 0, 6, 12, and 24 h) and then using an unsupervised hierarchical clustering of principal components (HCPC) approach to identify different phenotypes of SA-AKI.

Changes in Practices After Implementation of a Patient Blood Management Program in French Surgical Departments: The National Multicenter Observational PERIOPES Study.

Background: Patient blood management (PBM) is an evidence-based approach recommended to improve patient outcomes. Change in practices is often challenging. We report here data from French surgical departments before and after a standardized implementation of a PBM program.

Plantar compartment block for hallux valgus surgery: a proof-of-concept anatomic and clinical study.

Background: Hallux valgus surgery is associated with moderate to severe postoperative pain. We hypothesized that a plantar compartment block may be a good technique for postoperative analgesia. We describe an anatomic approach to ultrasound-guided plantar compartment block and assess the clinical efficacy of the block for outpatient surgery.

Adverse Events and Infectious Complications in the Critically Ill Treated by Plasma Exchange: A Five-Year Multicenter Cohort Study.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine, in critically ill patients treated with therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE), the incidence of adverse events as well as the incidence of secondary infections and its predictive factors.

Design: A multicenter retrospective cohort study of an intensive care population treated with TPE to collect adverse events and infectious complications. The characteristics of patients who developed an infection after plasma exchange were compared with those of patients who did not.
