Randomized controlled trials - The what, when, how and why.

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are at the top of the pyramid of evidence as they offer the best answer on the efficacy of a new treatment. RCTs are true experiments in which participants are randomly allocated to receive a certain intervention (experimental group) or a different intervention (comparison group), or no treatment at all (control or placebo group). Randomization, along with other methodological features such as blinding and allocation concealment, safeguard against biases.

Correction of non-traumatic extensor tendon dislocation and ulnar drift at the metacarpophalangeal joint by the modified Dell technique.

Background: Chronic ulnar extensor tendon dislocation at the metacarpophalangeal joint causes permanent extension deficit and ulnar drift. Several soft tissue procedures have been described for realignment of the extensor tendon in post-traumatic reducible instability or in combination with joint replacement in case of altered metacarpophalangeal joint in inflammatory conditions. However, no studies reported correction of both extension lag and ulnar deviation following isolated surgical treatment of ulnar extensor tendon dislocation at the metacarpophalangeal joint.

A model of relationships of teammate relations, body image, and eating behaviors among athletes.

Recent studies have identified athletes to be at elevated risk for developing disordered eating habits. However, few studies have investigated the association between teammate interactions and athletes' relationships with food and their body. To address this gap, the current study examined a model in which teammate appearance pressures were associated with disordered eating behaviors and body image concerns among varsity and club athletes who competed in a variety of sports at a US university.

Monitoring misuse and abuse of psychoactive substances in France: Insights from substance abuse treatment facilities through the OPPIDUM program.

The OPPIDUM program was first created in 1990. It is an annual, repeated, cross-sectional, nationwide, multicenter program. Data are provided directly from users of psychoactive substances (PAS) seen in substance abuse treatment facilities.

Accumulating research has supported the potential for body positivity content on Instagram to challenge predominant appearance ideals and promote a healthier body image. However, research in diverse groups is lacking - in particular, individuals with a disability have largely been neglected. Using #Disabled #BodyPositivity, this analysis examined the content of 623 body positive posts on Instagram.

Ultrasound guided transcutaneous phrenic nerve stimulation in critically ill patients: a new method to evaluate diaphragmatic function.

Background: Diaphragm dysfunction is common in intensive care unit and associated with weaning failure and mortality. Diagnosis gold standard is the transdiaphragmatic or tracheal pressure induced by magnetic phrenic nerve stimulation. However, the equipment is not commonly available and requires specific technical skills.

State affect and body image effects of body positive social media content within a female chronic illness sample.

Body positivity refers to a movement, popularized on social media, that encourages the normalization and acceptance of bodies diverging from sociocultural ideals, specifically within marginalized communities. Previous studies suggest that briefly viewing body positive social media content may lead to increased body satisfaction and positive affect in young women relative to thin-ideal and appearance-neutral content. Diminished body functionality and appearance change due to chronic illness poses a unique challenge to positive body image in young adults living with chronic illness.

Screen time, problematic screen use, and eating disorder symptoms among early adolescents: findings from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study.

Purpose: Emerging research evidence suggests positive relationships between higher screen time and eating disorders. However, few studies have examined the prospective associations between screen use and eating disorder symptoms in early adolescents and how problematic screen use may contribute to symptom development.

Methods: We analyzed prospective cohort data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study (N = 10,246, 2016-2020, ages 9-14).

The Value of Cultural Models in Eating Disorders Research in Korea: A Call for More Culturally Specific Works.

The study by Monocello et al. presents findings from a cultural model analysis providing support for culturally bounded understandings of weight and shape and body ideals, and identifying factors that vary across culturally anchored weight categories. In this commentary, we highlight the value of utilizing emic perspectives and employing cultural models in research focused on body image and disordered eating, and the usefulness of these empirical data among Korean men who constitute an underrepresented group in the eating disorders literature.
