Article Synopsis
  • Tissue-engineered constructs (TECs) are promising for treating large bone defects and can be enhanced by mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) that aid in blood vessel formation.
  • The study investigated how MSCs influence the migration of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) through the C-X-C chemokine receptor 2 (CXCR2) and its signaling pathways.
  • Findings revealed that blocking CXCR2 halted EPC migration and subsequent blood vessel formation and bone repair, identifying the Src-PKL/Vav2-Rac1 signaling pathway as a key mechanism.

Icariin, a prenylated flavonol glycoside isolated from the herb , has been considered as a potential alternative therapy for osteoporosis. Previous research has shown that, unlike other flavonoids, icariin is unlikely to act via the estrogen receptor, but its exact mechanism of action is unknown. In this study, using rat calvarial osteoblast culture and rat bone growth models, we demonstrated that icariin promotes bone formation by activating the cAMP/protein kinase A (PKA)/cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) pathway requiring functional primary cilia of osteoblasts.

Melatonin Receptor Agonist Piromelatine Ameliorates Impaired Glucose Metabolism in Chronically Stressed Rats Fed a High-Fat Diet.

J Pharmacol Exp Ther

January 2018

College of Pharmacy, Lanzhou University, Lanzhou, PR China (J.Z., M.X.L, R.X.Z, Z.P.J.); Xi'an Daxing Hospital, Shaanxi, PR China (D.W.); Lanzhou General Hospital of PLA, Lanzhou, PR China (J.Z., X.L., M.X.L, R.X.Z, Z.P.J.); Shanghai Institute of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China (X.J.); and Drug Discovery, Neurim Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Tel-Aviv, Israel (M.L.).

Modern lifestyle factors (high-caloric food rich in fat) and daily chronic stress are important risk factors for metabolic disturbances. Increased hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity and the subsequent excess production of glucocorticoids (GCs) in response to chronic stress (CS) leads to increases in metabolic complications, such as type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance (IR). Melatonin (MLT), which protects several regulatory components of the HPA axis from GC-induced deterioration, might improve glucose homeostasis.

Ultra-wide band (UWB) radar for short-range human target detection is widely used to find and locate survivors in some rescue missions after a disaster. The results of the application of bistatic UWB radar for detecting multi-stationary human targets have shown that human targets close to the radar antennas are very often visible, while those farther from radar antennas are detected with less reliability. In this paper, on account of the significant difference of frequency content between the echo signal of the human target and that of noise in the shadowing region, an algorithm based on wavelet entropy is proposed to detect multiple targets.

Prostate cancer (PCa) poses a high risk to older men and it is the second most common type of male malignant tumor in western developed countries. Additionally, there is a lack of effective therapies for PCa at advanced stages. Novel treatment strategies such as adenovirus‑mediated gene therapy and virotherapy involve the expression of a specific therapeutic gene to induce death in cancer cells, however, wild‑type adenoviruses are also able to infect normal human cells, which leads to undesirable toxicity.

Previous studies suggested that the patients with generalized tonic-clonic seizure had structural abnormalities in the thalamus, cingulated cortex and some other specific brain regions. Concurrently, the abnormality in thalamocortical network and basal ganglia network has been found in idiopathic generalized epilepsy. The cingulated cortex, a nexus of information processing and regulation in human brain, is implicated in the propagation of generalized spike in IGE and the previous studies have suggested that the structural features and functional connectivity of the cingulated cortex have been changed.
