Molecular epidemiology and characterization of bovine leukemia virus in domestic yaks (Bos grunniens) on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China.

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is a member of the genus Deltaretrovirus of the family Retroviridae and cause a chronic lymphosarcoma, which is extensive in cattle. In yaks (Bos grunniens), the distribution, strains and genetic characteristics of BLV have rarely been studied. The aim of our study was to investigate BLV infections in domestic yaks and determine the genetic variability of BLV circulating in a region of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, China.

Risk Factors Analysis for Foot Drop Associated with Lumbar Disc Herniation: An Analysis of 236 Patients.

Objectives: To identify the risk factors for foot drop in patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH).

Methods: Two hundred thirty-six patients who underwent surgery for LDH were retrospectively reviewed. Foot drop was defined as tibialis anterior muscle strength of lower than grade 4 by the manual muscle test.

Surgical Treatment of Thoracic Spinal Tuberculosis: A Multicenter Retrospective Study.

Objective: The aim of the present multicenter, retrospective study was to assess the safety and effectiveness of different surgery strategies for the treatment of thoracic tuberculosis and to provide a reference for surgical treatment of thoracic tuberculosis.

Materials And Methods: This study reviewed 394 patients with thoracic tuberculosis who were treated in 6 institutions between January 2000 and January 2015. There were 208 men and 186 women with an average age of 34.

Lipidated Peptide Dendrimers Killing Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria.

New antibiotics are urgently needed to address multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. Herein we report that second-generation (G2) peptide dendrimers bearing a fatty acid chain at the dendrimer core efficiently kill Gram-negative bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii, two of the most problematic MDR bacteria worldwide. Our most active dendrimer TNS18 is also active against Gram-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

[Clinical value of tumor size in the evaluation of adrenal incidentalomas].

To investigate the clinical value of tumor size in the evaluation of endocrinological and histological natures regarding adrenal incidentaloma (AI) patients. A total of 1 941 AI patients who were hospitalized in Department of Endocrinology, Chinese PLA General Hospital between January 1997 and December 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. The demographics of patients, imaging features, functional status and histological results were analyzed.

FOXA2 alleviates CCl-induced liver fibrosis by protecting hepatocytes in mice.

The liver-enriched transcription factor Forkhead Box A2 (FOXA2) has been reported to be involved in bile acid homeostasis and bile duct development. However, the role of FOXA2 in liver fibrogenesis remains undefined. In this study, we found that the abundance of FOXA2 was significantly lower in fibrotic livers of patients and mice treated with CCl than in controls.

Comorbidity Burden of Dementia: A Hospital-Based Retrospective Study from 2003 to 2012 in Seven Cities in China.

Dementia is increasing dramatically and imposes a huge burden on society. To date, there is a lack of data on the health status of patients with dementia in China. In an attempt to investigate the comorbidity burden of dementia patients in China at the national level, we enrolled 2,938 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), vascular dementia (VaD), or other types of dementia, who were admitted to tertiary hospitals in seven regions of China from January 2003 to December 2012.

Calcium-and integrin-binding protein 1(CIB1),a member of calcium binding protein containing EF-hand domain,has been shown to bind a variety of signaling proteins. CIB1 has also been implicated in both the increase and decrease of cell proliferation.

Radiofrequency ablation for hepatic hemangiomas: A consensus from a Chinese panel of experts.

Recent studies have shown that radiofrequency (RF) ablation therapy is a safe, feasible, and effective procedure for hepatic hemangiomas, even huge hepatic hemangiomas. RF ablation has the following advantages in the treatment of hepatic hemangiomas: minimal invasiveness, definite efficacy, high safety, fast recovery, relatively simple operation, and wide applicability. It is necessary to formulate a widely accepted consensus among the experts in China who have extensive expertise and experience in the treatment of hepatic hemangiomas using RF ablation, which is important to standardize the application of RF ablation for the management of hepatic hemangiomas, regarding the selection of patients with suitable indications to receive RF ablation treatment, the technical details of the techniques, therapeutic effect evaluations, management of complications, .

The flavonol glycoside icariin promotes bone formation in growing rats by activating the cAMP signaling pathway in primary cilia of osteoblasts.

Icariin, a prenylated flavonol glycoside isolated from the herb , has been considered as a potential alternative therapy for osteoporosis. Previous research has shown that, unlike other flavonoids, icariin is unlikely to act via the estrogen receptor, but its exact mechanism of action is unknown. In this study, using rat calvarial osteoblast culture and rat bone growth models, we demonstrated that icariin promotes bone formation by activating the cAMP/protein kinase A (PKA)/cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) pathway requiring functional primary cilia of osteoblasts.

[Surgery versus conservative management for subclinical Cushing's syndrome in adrenal incidentalomas].

To determine the effect of the surgical and conservative approaches on the metabolic profiles in patients with subclinical Cushing's syndrome (SCS) in adrenal incidentalomas (AI). A hundred and thirty AI patients with SCS in Department of Endocrinology, PLA General Hospital between January 2008 and December 2016 were studied, surgery was performed in 88 patients (surgical group), and the rest received conservative approach (conservative group). The improvement/worsening of blood pressure, blood glucose, lipid profiles and body weight after a duration of >18 months follow-up were analyzed, respectively.

Clinical epidemiological survey of gallbladder carcinoma in northwestern China, 2009-2013: 2379 cases in 17 centers.

Objective: To analyze the clinical epidemiological characteristics of patients with gallbladder carcinoma recruited from 17 hospitals in five northwestern provinces of China (Shaanxi Province, Gansu Province, Qinghai Province, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region) from 2009 to 2013, and to summarize the clinical diagnosis and treatment data of gallbladder carcinoma.

Methods: Clinical information of 2379 patients with gallbladder carcinoma from 17 hospitals in five northwestern provinces of China was retrospectively collected and analyzed using the "Questionnaire for Gallbladder Carcinoma Patients in Northwestern Area of China." All information was verified with EpiData software and analyzed with SPSS 13.

Loss of key components that form cell-cell adherens junctions, such as α-catenin, triggers severe epidermal hyperproliferation. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain largely unknown. We report here that neuroblastoma breakpoint family (NBPF) genes are upregulated and that NBPF7 specifically promotes cellular proliferation of α-catenin-silenced HaCaT cells through functional linkage with the NF-κB pathway.

Melatonin Receptor Agonist Piromelatine Ameliorates Impaired Glucose Metabolism in Chronically Stressed Rats Fed a High-Fat Diet.

Modern lifestyle factors (high-caloric food rich in fat) and daily chronic stress are important risk factors for metabolic disturbances. Increased hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity and the subsequent excess production of glucocorticoids (GCs) in response to chronic stress (CS) leads to increases in metabolic complications, such as type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance (IR). Melatonin (MLT), which protects several regulatory components of the HPA axis from GC-induced deterioration, might improve glucose homeostasis.

An Algorithm Based Wavelet Entropy for Shadowing Effect of Human Detection Using Ultra-Wideband Bio-Radar.

Ultra-wide band (UWB) radar for short-range human target detection is widely used to find and locate survivors in some rescue missions after a disaster. The results of the application of bistatic UWB radar for detecting multi-stationary human targets have shown that human targets close to the radar antennas are very often visible, while those farther from radar antennas are detected with less reliability. In this paper, on account of the significant difference of frequency content between the echo signal of the human target and that of noise in the shadowing region, an algorithm based on wavelet entropy is proposed to detect multiple targets.

Targeting strategies of adenovirus‑mediated gene therapy and virotherapy for prostate cancer (Review).

Prostate cancer (PCa) poses a high risk to older men and it is the second most common type of male malignant tumor in western developed countries. Additionally, there is a lack of effective therapies for PCa at advanced stages. Novel treatment strategies such as adenovirus‑mediated gene therapy and virotherapy involve the expression of a specific therapeutic gene to induce death in cancer cells, however, wild‑type adenoviruses are also able to infect normal human cells, which leads to undesirable toxicity.

Impairments of cingulated cortex in the generalized tonic-clonic seizure epilepsy by combining morphological and functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging.

Previous studies suggested that the patients with generalized tonic-clonic seizure had structural abnormalities in the thalamus, cingulated cortex and some other specific brain regions. Concurrently, the abnormality in thalamocortical network and basal ganglia network has been found in idiopathic generalized epilepsy. The cingulated cortex, a nexus of information processing and regulation in human brain, is implicated in the propagation of generalized spike in IGE and the previous studies have suggested that the structural features and functional connectivity of the cingulated cortex have been changed.

Multifocal pigmented villonodular synovitis coexisting in both the knee joint and the patella: a case report and literature review.

Backgroud: Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is an uncommon entity of proliferative lesion of the synovium, presenting with different clinical signs and symptoms. PVNS rarely forms an osteolytic lesion in a bone. Here we report a unique case of PVNS with a nodular lesion in the left patella.
