Standard CD44 modulates YAP1 through a positive feedback loop in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Biomed Pharmacother

July 2018

Department of Medical Oncology and Laboratory of Molecular Targeted Therapy in Oncology, State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan, 610041, PR China. Electronic address:

High expression levels of CD44 and YAP have been identified as poor prognostic factors in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the mechanistic relationship between CD44 and YAP during HCC tumorigenesis remains largely unknown. To investigate the mutual regulation between standard CD44 (CD44S) and YAP1 in HCC cell lines and tissue samples, CD44S and YAP1 expression in 40 pairs of tumor samples and matched distal normal tissues from HCC patients was examined by immunohistochemical staining.

Introduction: Herniation of the nucleus pulposus (NP) because of defects in the annulus fibrosus (AF) is a well-known cause of low back pain. Defects in the AF thus remain a surgical challenge, and efforts have been made to develop new techniques for closure and repair. In this study, we developed an electrospun aligned nanoyarn scaffold (AYS) and nanoyarn/three-dimensional porous nanofibrous hybrid scaffold (HS) for AF tissue engineering.

The current study aimed to identify a comprehensive expression-profile of microRNAs (miRNAs) in expressed prostatic secretion (EPS) collected from healthy men and patients with CP/CPPS (Chronic prostatitis/Chronic pelvic pain syndrome). After clinical screening of 382 participants, 60 healthy men and 59 IIIA CP/CPPS patients with significant pelvic-pain were included into this study from March 2012 to December 2014. High-throughput sequencing was employed to identify characteristic expression-profile of EPS-miRNAs.

A fracture is the most dangerous complication of osteoporosis in patients because the associated disability and mortality rates are high. Osteoporosis impairs fracture healing and prognosis, but how intramembranous ossification (IO) or endochondral ossification (EO) during fracture healing are affected and whether these two kinds of ossification are different between glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIOP) and estrogen deficiency-induced osteoporosis (EDOP) are poorly understood. In this study, we established two bone repair models that exhibited repair via IO or EO and compared the pathological progress of each under GIOP and EDOP.

Elevated circulating ghrelin in patients with COPD: A meta-analysis.

Chron Respir Dis

November 2018

2 Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, West China Hospital, West China School of Medicine, Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan, People's Republic of China.

Ghrelin, an endogenous ligand for growth hormone secretagogue receptor, has been implicated in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Recently, several studies reported inconsistent levels of ghrelin in plasma/serum of COPD patients. This meta-analysis aims to determine the circulating level of ghrelin in COPD.

To study the expression of Rho kinase (Rho associated coil forming protein kinase-1, ROCK-1) and its substrate myosin phosphatase target subunit 1 (myosin phosphatase target subunit-1, MYPT-1), connexin 40 (Cx40) and connexin 43 (Cx43) in the left atrial appendage of patients with atrial fibrillation, and explore the role of ROCK signaling pathway in patients with atrial fibrillation and its underlying mechanism. Methods: 40 patients undergoing open heart surgery were divided into two groups; atrial fibrillation group (AF group) and sinus rhythm group (SR group). About 100 mg of left atrial appendage tissue was taken during surgery and quickly frozen in liquid nitrogen.

Plasma proteomic study of acute mountain sickness susceptible and resistant individuals.

Sci Rep

January 2018

Key Laboratory of the plateau of environmental damage control, Lanzhou General Hospital of Lanzhou Military Command, No. 333 Binhe South Road, Lanzhou, 730050, Gansu, China.

Although extensive studies have focused on the development of acute mountain sickness (AMS), the exact mechanisms of AMS are still obscure. In this study, we used isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) proteomic analysis to identify novel AMS-associated biomarkers in human plasma. After 9 hours of hypobaric hypoxia the abundance of proteins related to tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, glycolysis, ribosome, and proteasome were significantly reduced in AMS resistant (AMS-) group, but not in AMS susceptible (AMS+) group.

Bone fractures are a medical condition where the continuity of the bone is broken due to a fall or accident. The fracture may also be the result of medical conditions such as osteoporosis, cancers of bone or osteogenesis imperfect. During the bone fracture healing process, the mesenchymal stem cells (undifferentiated connective tissue cells) are recruited from local and systemic sources.

Isoliquiritigenin inhibits the proliferation and induces the differentiation of human glioma stem cells.

Oncol Rep

February 2018

Department of Neurosurgery, Lanzhou General Hospital, Lanzhou Command of CPLA, Lanzhou, Gansu 730050, P.R. China.

Glioma stem cells (GSCs) have been proven to be resistant to various therapeutic strategies, such as temozolomide chemotherapy and radiotherapy, leading to glioma recurrence. Isoliquiritigenin (ISL), a menber of the flavonoids isolated from liquorice has been found to be a potent stimulator of cell differentiation and has potential application for treating various types of cancer including human brain glioma. However, the antitumor activity of ISL on GSCs and the signaling pathway underlying its therapeutic effects are poorly understood.
