Article Synopsis
  • Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a serious disease affecting the central nervous system, and this study aimed to identify risk factors that predict poor outcomes in adults with severe JE.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 38 severe JE patients and 33 with no CNS issues, using machine learning to pinpoint key clinical risk indicators.
  • Key findings included that higher neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratios (NLR) and neutrophilic counts, along with lower lymphocyte counts and elevated AST and blood glucose levels, are linked to a worse prognosis for JE patients.

Immune inhibitory receptors (IRs) play a critical role in the regulation of immune responses to various respiratory viral infections. However, in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the roles of these IRs in immune modulation, metabolic reprogramming, and clinical characterization remain to be determined. Through consensus clustering analysis of IR transcription in the peripheral blood of patients with COVID-19, we identified two distinct IR patterns in patients with COVID-19, which were named IR_cluster1 and IR_cluster2.

Background: The hypomethylating agent decitabine is the standard therapy for intermediate or high risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).

Methods: In this trial, 191 adult patients with intermediate/high risk MDS (IPSS score ≥ 0.5) randomly received decitabine using a standard regimen (20 mg/m /day for 5 consecutive days; n = 94) or an extended regimen with lower daily dose (12 mg/m /day for 8 consecutive days; n = 97) every 4 weeks, for a total of 4 cycles.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines post-traumatic related limb osteomyelitis (PTRLO) in China, revealing a notable increase in infection rates from 0.93% to 2.16% over ten years, with a predominance of monomicrobial infections (82.6%).
  • The research identified significant increases in both Gram-positive (GP) and Gram-negative (GN) pathogens, with the most common strains being Methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, respectively.
  • High-risk factors for polymicrobial infections included open fractures, hypoproteinemia, and multiple fractures, emphasizing the need for targeted antibiotic resistance and sensitivity analysis.

The plateau is a typical extreme environment with low temperature, low oxygen and high ultraviolet rays. The integrity of the intestinal barrier is the basis for the functioning of the intestine, which plays an important role in absorbing nutrients, maintaining the balance of intestinal flora, and blocking the invasion of toxins. Currently, there is increasing evidence that high altitude environment can enhance intestinal permeability and disrupt intestinal barrier integrity.

Background: Cognitive impairment is one of the primary sequelae affecting the quality of life of patients with Japanese encephalitis (JE). The clinical treatment is mainly focused on life support, lacking of targeted treatment strategy.

Methods: A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteomic profiling study was performed including 26 patients with JE in Gansu province of China from June 2017 to October 2018 and 33 other concurrent hospitalized patients who were excluded central nervous system (CNS) organic or CNS infection diseases.

Background: There is currently a lack of consensus regarding the clinical features, diagnosis, treatment indications and options, and risk assessment of hepatic hemangioma patients.

Methods: This was a multicenter, real-world study that analyzed a large number of hepatic hemangioma cases in China and included patient data on epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment methods, and outcomes.

Results: A total of 5,143 patients hospitalized for hepatic hemangioma were included, of whom 34.

Background: The outcome of deploying balloon-mounted stents for symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS) has not been fully investigated. In this study we evaluate the safety and long-term outcome of using balloon-mounted stents to treat symptomatic ICAS in comparison with the WEAVE/WOVEN study.

Methods: In a multicenter registry study of stenting for symptomatic intracranial artery stenosis in China, 159 patients treated with an intracranial balloon-mounted stent approved by the China Food and Drug Administration were evaluated.

Human antigen R (HuR) is a member of the Hu family of RNA-binding proteins. This molecule, which was first described in tumors nearly two decades ago, has recently received much attention in tumor-related research because it regulates the expression of many tumor-associated molecules through posttranscriptional regulatory mechanisms, thereby affecting biological characteristics. It is suggested that HuR might be a novel therapeutic target and a marker for therapeutic response and prognostic assessment.

The Indian hedgehog (IHH) signaling pathway is an important pathway for bone growth and development. The aim of the present study was to examine the role of the IHH signaling pathway in the development of the ossification of ligamentum flavum (OLF) at the cellular and tissue levels. The expression levels and localization of the osteogenic genes Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), Osterix, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), osteocalcin (OCN) and IHH were evaluated in OLF tissues by reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) and immunohistochemistry.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the quality of global clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) on gout.

Methods: We systematically searched MEDLINE, CBM (Chinese Biomedical Literature database), GIN (Guidelines International Network), NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence), NGC (National Guideline Clearinghouse), WHO (World Health Organization), SIGN (Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network), DynaMed, UpToDate, and Best Practice databases from their inception until January 2017 to identify and select CPGs related to gout. Two reviewers independently assessed the eligible gout CPGs using the AGREE II instrument.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a specific obstetric disorder that may result in maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Increasing evidence has been indicated that some candidate genes related to oxidative stress, such as glutamate-cysteine ligase, catalytic subunit (GCLC), glutamate-cysteine ligase, modifier subunit (GCLM), involve in the pathogenesis of PE. After the genetic contribution of GCLC rs17883901 polymorphism was analyzed by TaqMan allelic discrimination real-time PCR in 1001 PE patients and 1182 normal pregnant women, a case-control association analysis was performed.
