Despite their role in host nutrition, the anaerobic gut fungal (AGF) component of the herbivorous gut microbiome remains poorly characterized. Here, to examine global patterns and determinants of AGF diversity, we generate and analyze an amplicon dataset from 661 fecal samples from 34 mammalian species, 9 families, and 6 continents. We identify 56 novel genera, greatly expanding AGF diversity beyond current estimates (31 genera and candidate genera).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate how substituting raw rapeseed cake (RC) with fermented rapeseed cake (FRC) in dairy cow diets affects methane production, rumen fermentation, and milk quality.
  • Using a series of experiments, researchers found that feeding FRC significantly reduced methane emissions by 12% and altered the ruminal fermentation profile without negatively impacting nutrient digestibility.
  • Additionally, while there were no major effects on milk yield and composition, FRC improved certain fatty acid ratios in milk and increased the degradation efficiency of nutrients compared to RC.

Poor semen profile reflected by suboptimum fertility statistics is a concern in bulls reared for breeding purpose. A critical review of research on candidate genes and proteins associated with semen quality traits will be useful to understand the progress of molecular marker development for bull semen quality traits. Here, we have tabulated and classified candidate genes and proteins associated with bull semen quality based on a literature survey.

Two decades of fumigation data from the Soybean Free Air Concentration Enrichment facility.

Sci Data

April 2023

Global Change and Photosynthesis Research Unit, United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Urbana, IL, 61801, USA.

The Soybean Free Air Concentration Enrichment (SoyFACE) facility is the longest running open-air carbon dioxide and ozone enrichment facility in the world. For over two decades, soybean, maize, and other crops have been exposed to the elevated carbon dioxide and ozone concentrations anticipated for late this century. The facility, located in East Central Illinois, USA, exposes crops to different atmospheric concentrations in replicated octagonal ~280 m Free Air Concentration Enrichment (FACE) treatment plots.

Female hair sheep, 27 Dorper (DOR), 41 Katahdin (KAT), and 39 St. Croix (STC), were used to determine influences of the nutritional plane before breeding and in early gestation on feed intake, body weight, body condition score, body mass indexes, blood constituent concentrations, and reproductive performance. There were 35 multiparous and 72 primiparous sheep, with initial ages of 5.

The southwest coastal belt of Bangladesh is characterized by a fresh and saline water interaction which gives rise to a discrete inter-saline freshwater convergence zone (ICZ). Hydrology and farming along this transition zone is influenced by upstream and downstream abiotic factors including salinity intrusion and water flow. To better understand the changing geography of the transitional ICZ line and the relative influence of these hydrological events on farming therein, the recent study compared relative changes from 2010 to 2014 based on qualitative and quantitative survey work with 80 households of 4 villages (Shobna, Faltita, Badukhali and Rudaghora) from Khulna and Bagerhat district.

Lung metastasis is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Here, we show that intranasal delivery of our engineered CpG-coated tumor antigen (Tag)-encapsulated nanoparticles (NPs)-nasal nano-vaccine-significantly reduced lung colonization by intravenous challenge of an extra-pulmonary tumor. Protection against tumor-cell lung colonization was linked to the induction of localized mucosal-associated effector and resident memory T cells as well as increased bronchiolar alveolar lavage-fluid IgA and serum IgG antibody responses.

This study was conducted to assess effects of the nutritional plane before and during breeding on feed intake, body weight (BW) change, reproductive performance, body condition score (BCS), body mass indexes (BMI), and body composition of three breeds of hair sheep. Twenty-five Dorper, 27 Katahdin, and 33 St. Croix ewes were allocated to groups and treatments based on initial BW and age.

This investigation examined vocational rehabilitation, substance abuse, and mental health service providers' perceptions about barriers and potentially translational solutions to poor community living outcomes for people of color with disabilities (i.e., African Americans, Latinx, Native Americans and Alaskan Natives, Asian Americans, and Pacific islanders) who have opioid use disorder.

The objective of this study was to assess the effects of the dietary level of a condensed tannin-rich forage on linear measures, body condition score (BCS), body mass indexes (BMI), and performance and relationships among these variables in growing dairy goats and hair sheep raised for meat. An experiment with a 2 × 3 factorial treatment arrangement was conducted, with two species and three diets. Diets were 25% concentrate and 75% forage, which were alfalfa hay, condensed tannin-containing Sericea lespedeza hay, and a 1:1 mixture of both hay sources.

Different hair sheep breeds originated from diverse climatic regions of the USA may show varying adaptability to water deprivation. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the effects of restricted availability of drinking water on blood characteristics and constituent concentrations in different breeds of hair sheep from various regions the USA. For this study, 45 Dorper (initial age = 3.

Transcription activator-like effector nuclease (TALEN) plasmids targeting the channel catfish gonadotropin-releasing hormone (cfGnRH) gene were delivered into fertilized eggs with double electroporation to sterilize channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). Targeted cfGnRH fish were sequenced and base deletion, substitution, and insertion were detected. The gene mutagenesis was achieved in 52.

The Alpine goat (Capra aegagrus hircus) is parasitized by the barber pole worm (Haemonchus contortus). Hematological parameters from transcript and metagenome analysis in the host are reflective of infestation. We explored comparisons between blood samples of control, infected, infected zoledronic acid-treated, and infected antibody (anti-γδ T cells) treated wethers under controlled conditions.

Post-doctoral mentorship and training is considered a critical research capacity building approach vital to successful research career development. Existing models, however, may be insufficient for improving research skills among fellows at minority-serving institutions. This study evaluated a Peer Multiple Mentor Model (P3M) at a historically Black college and/or University (HBCU) designed to provide advanced research training to post-doctoral fellows and alleviate long-standing employment, health and function, and community participation inequities among multiply marginalized people of color with disabilities.

This article provided a comprehensive overview of challenges that African Americans with disabilities residing in rural areas often face in the United States when accessing telehealth treatment to mitigate opioid misuse. A scoping literature review was conducted focusing on this target population, telehealth, disabilities, opioid treatment, and rural healthcare systems. Systematic searches on eight electronic databases were carried out in line with the study's aims.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between assistive technology workplace accommodation (AT-WA) usage and employment status among racial/ethnic populations with disabilities. Chi-square tests and logistic regression were used to analyze secondary data from the 2015 Kessler Foundation National Employment and Disability Survey (KFNEDS). Results indicated that significantly more consumers who used AT-WA were currently working, and a significantly greater proportion of them were White.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of water quality on water intake (WI), forage intake, diet digestibility, and blood constituents in beef cows and growing beef heifers. This was a replicated 5 × 5 Latin square with five drinking water treatments within each square: 1) fresh water (Control); 2) brackish water (100 BRW treatment) with approximately 6,000 mg/kg total dissolved solids (TDS); 3) same TDS level as 100 BRW achieved by addition of NaCl to fresh water (100 SLW); 4) 50% brackish water and 50% fresh water to achieve approximately 3,000 mg/kg TDS (50 BRW); and 5) same TDS level as 50 BRW achieved by addition of NaCl to fresh water (50 SLW). Each of the five 21-d periods consisted of 14 d of adaptation and 5 d of data collection.
