Background: M2 macrophages have important roles in diseases such as tumours, cardiovascular diseases and renal diseases. This study aimed to determine the effects and protective mechanism of M2 macrophages against oxidative stress injury and apoptosis induced by calcium oxalate crystals (CaOx) in renal tubular epithelial cells (HK-2) under coculture conditions.
Methods: THP-1 cells were induced to differentiate into M2 macrophages by using phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate, IL-4 and IL-13.

The aim of the current study was to develop a predictor classifier for response to fluorouracil-based chemotherapy in patients with advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) using microarray gene expression profiles of primary CRC tissues. Using two expression profiles downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between responders and non-responders to fluorouracil-based chemotherapy were identified. A total of 791 DEGs, including 303 that were upregulated and 488 that were downregulated in responders, were identified.

Growing evidence has revealed that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have an important impact on tumorigenesis and tumor progression via a mechanism involving competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs). However, their use in predicting the survival of a patient with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unclear. The aim of this study was to develop a novel lncRNA expression-based risk score system to accurately predict the survival of patients with HCC.

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is the most common and lethal renal malignant tumor in adults. The aim of the present study was to identify the key genes involved in ccRCC metastasis. Expression profiling data for ccRCC patients with metastasis and without metastasis were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas database.

Background: Local anesthetics in spinal anesthesia have neurotoxic effects, resulting in severe neurological complications. Intrathecal monosialoganglioside (GM1) administration has a therapeutic effect on bupivacaine-induced neurotoxicity. The aim of this study was to determine the underlying mechanisms of bupivacaine-induced neurotoxicity and the potential neuroprotective role of GM1.

The tissue engineering technique using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and scaffolds is promising. Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) is generally accepted as an chondrogenic agent, but immunorejection and unexpected side effects, such as tumorigenesis and heterogeneity, limit its clinical application. Autogenous platelet-rich plasma (PRP), marked by low immunogenicity, easy accessibility, and low-cost, may be favorable for cartilage regeneration.

RNA binding motif protein 8A (RBM8A) is an RNA binding protein in a core component of the exon junction complex. Abnormal expression is associated with carcinogenesis. We used sequencing data from the Cancer Genome Atlas database and Gene Expression Omnibus, analyzed expression and gene regulation networks in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Aim: The aim of this study was to develop a novel long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) expression signature to accurately predict early recurrence for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after curative resection.
Methods: Using expression profiles downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas database, we identified multiple lncRNAs with differential expression between early recurrence (ER) and non-early recurrence (non-ER) groups of patients with HCC. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator for logistic regression models were used to develop an lncRNA-based classifier for predicting ER in the training set.

Calcifying nanoparticles (CNPs) play an important role in kidney stone formation, but the mechanism(s) are unclear. CNPs were isolated and cultured from midstream urine of patients with kidney stones. CNP morphology and characteristics were examined by electron microscopy and electrophoresis analysis.

Background/aims: Nephrolithiasis is a common and frequently occurring disease, its exact pathogenesis is remains unclear. Emerging data suggest that autophagy plays a vital role in the pathophysiological processes of kidney diseases. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the potential role of autophagy in the formation of calcium oxalate (CaOx) kidney stones in rat model.

Various techniques have proven to be effective for treating articular cartilage defect of the knee joint, but knowledge regarding which method is best still remains uncertain. Osteochondral autologous transplantation (OAT) provides hyaline or hyaline-like repair for articular defects, whereas microfracture (MF) provides fibrocartilage repair tissue. To compare the OAT with MF procedure for the treatment of articular cartilage defect, we present an update of previous meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
