The majority of vehicle accidents are attributable to driver error, such as substance use, distractions, fatigue, speeding, and driving experience. Many of these driver errors are also associated with delay discounting, where individuals that excessively devalue a reward are more likely to use substances such as alcohol, cigarettes, and cocaine, and text-while-driving. The current study sought to examine a more direct association between delay discounting and driver error by providing 50 participants with a series of simulated driving tasks, along with measuring their delay discounting rates.

Previous studies have demonstrated that there is a high possibility that the presence of certain built environment characteristics can influence health outcomes, especially those related to obesity and physical activity. We examined the associations between select neighborhood built environment indicators (crosswalks, non-single family home buildings, single-lane roads, and visible wires), and health outcomes, including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and premature mortality, at the state level. We utilized 31,247,167 images collected from Google Street View to create indicators for neighborhood built environment characteristics using deep learning techniques.

Previous studies suggest that extremely low-frequency (ELF) electric and magnetic fields (EMFs) may impact human health. However, epidemiologic studies have provided inconsistent results on the association between exposure to ELF EMFs and various health outcomes. This scoping review reports on primary investigations that were published during the ten-year period of 2007-2017 on the association between ELF EMFs and cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), reproductive health effects, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Light-operated materials have gained significant attention for their potential technological importance. To achieve molecular motion within extended networks, stimuli-responsive units require free space. The majority of the so far reported 2D-extended organic networks with responsive moieties restrict their freedom of motion on account of their connectivity providing constrained free volume for efficient molecular motion.

This report presents a facile microfabrication-compatible approach to fabricate a large area of plasmonic nano-pyramid array-based antennas and demonstrates effective light management by tailoring the architecture. First, a long-range ordered gold nano-pyramid array is fabricated, which exhibits strong light scattering. The maximum electric field enhancement (||/| |) of 271 is achieved at the corner but decays rapidly away from the pyramid bottom.

Fatigue is one problem with driving as it can lead to difficulties with sustaining attention, behavioral lapses, and a tendency to ignore vital information or operations. In this research, we explore multimodal physiological phenomena in response to driving fatigue through simultaneous functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and electroencephalography (EEG) recordings with the aim of investigating the relationships between hemodynamic and electrical features and driving performance. Sixteen subjects participated in an event-related lane-deviation driving task while measuring their brain dynamics through fNIRS and EEGs.

We report a unique constant phase element (CPE) behavior ( 1 Z = Q 0 ( j ω ) α ) of the electrolyte-graphene interface with both Q 0 and α showing dependence on the gate voltage. The frequency response of the electrolyte-graphene interface was studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The result suggests that (1) the electrolyte-graphene interface should be characterized as a CPE ( α < 1), rather than an ideal capacitor; and (2) both Q 0 and α show ambipolar dependence on the applied voltage.

Tantalum nitride is a promising photoanode material for solar water splitting, but further study and practical use are constrained by the harsh conditions of the synthesis from Ta metal. Here, we report the direct deposition of crystalline TaN on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate via a custom-built atomic layer deposition (ALD) system. A combination of TaCl (Ta precursor) and ammonia (N source) was sequentially pulsed into the ALD reactor with the substrate heated to 550 °C to deposit compact and thin films of TaN with controllable thicknesses on FTO substrates.

Objectives: To assess the added value of 3D T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) over conventional 2D T2WI in diagnosing extracapsular extension (ECE).
Methods: Seventy-five patients undergoing 3-T MRI before radical prostatectomy were included. PI-RADS ≥ 4 lesions were assessed for ECE on 2D T2W images using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = no ECE, 5 = definite ECE) and the length of tumour prostatic capsular contact.

Significant progress has been made on the development of electrolyte-gated graphene field effect transistor (EGGFET) biosensors over the last decade, yet they are still in the stage of proof-of-concept. In this work, we studied the electrolyte matrix effects, including its composition, pH and ionic strength, and demonstrate that variations in electrolyte matrices have a significant impact on the Fermi level of the graphene channel and the sensitivity of the EGGFET biosensors. This is attributed to the polarization-induced interaction between the electrolyte and the graphene at the interface which can lead to considerable modulation of the Fermi level of the graphene channel.

A new fabrication route, which combines nanosphere lithography with silicon-based clean-room microfabrication processes, has been developed to produce large-area long-range ordered gold nanoring array patterns in a controllable fashion. Both the experimentation and the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation show that the surface plasmon resonance peak (SPR) of the nanoring array pattern can be tuned systematically in a large spectral range by varying the geometry parameters such as the ring thickness, the ring height, the ringer outer diameter, and the gap between neighboring rings. For the Au nanoring arrays with a large gap in the absence of plasmon coupling between neighboring rings, the local electromagnetic (EM) field enhancement occurs at both the outer and inner surfaces of individual nanorings; and the periodicity of Au nanoring array has no any effect on the plasmonic properties.

Nutrient pollution is of worldwide environmental and health concerns due to extensive use of nitrogen fertilizers and release of livestock waste, which induces nitrite compounds in aquatic systems. Herein a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor is developed for nitrite detection based on coupling between the plasmonic gold nanostars and the silver nanopyramid array. When nitrite is present in the assay, an azo group is formed between the 1-naphthylamine-functionalized silver nanopyramids and the 4-aminothiophenol-functionalized gold nanostars.

The Large Cell (LC) motor neurons of the crab cardiac ganglion have variable membrane conductance magnitudes even within the same individual, yet produce identical synchronized activity in the intact network. In a previous study we blocked a subset of K conductances across LCs, resulting in loss of synchronous activity (Lane et al., 2016).

Hollow microneedles are an emerging technology for delivering drugs and therapeutics, such as vaccines and insulin, into the skin. Although the benefits of intradermal drug delivery have been known for decades, our understanding of fluid absorption by skin tissue has been limited due to the difficulties in imaging a highly scattering biological material such as skin. Here, we report the first real-time imaging of skin tissue at the microscale during intradermal injections through hollow microneedles, using optical coherence tomography.

Neural circuit formation involves maturation of neuronal, glial and vascular cells, as well as cell proliferation and cell death. A fundamental understanding of cellular mechanisms is enhanced by quantification of cell types during key events in synapse formation and pruning and possessing qualified genetic tools for cell type-specific manipulation. Acquiring this information in turn requires validated cell markers and genetic tools.

Enzyme activities are well established biomarkers of many pathologies. Imaging enzyme activity directly in vivo may help to gain insight into the pathogenesis of various diseases but remains extremely challenging. In this communication, we report the use of EPR imaging (EPRI) in combination with a specially designed paramagnetic enzymatic substrate to map alkaline phosphatase activity with a high selectivity, thereby demonstrating the potential of EPRI to map enzyme activity.
