Background: Foot and ankle surgeons often perform minor surgeries on the preoperative stretcher instead of the operating room table. We examined whether stretcher-based and operating room table-based procedures differed with respect to operating room efficiency and staff perceptions.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed medical records of patients undergoing minor foot and ankle surgery at an ambulatory surgery centre.

Introduction: To reach the highest levels of health care quality, all nurses providing intraoperative care to surgical patients should have a firm grasp of the complex knowledge, skills, and guidelines undergirding the perioperative nursing profession. In military treatment facilities, either perioperative registered nurses or labor and delivery (L&D) nurses provide skilled intraoperative nursing care for cesarean deliveries. However, L&D and perioperative nurses occupy vastly different roles in the continuum of care and may possess widely differing levels of surgical training and experience.

Introduction: Military nurses comprise the largest percentage of military health care providers. In the current military health care system, they have two roles: (1) Patient care in military treatment facilities (MTFs) and (2) patient care during combat operations. Although in MTFs, the military nurse's roles are similar to those of their civilian counterpart, their roles are unique and varied in the combat operational environment.

Introduction: Preventable patient harm has persisted in health care despite recent advances to reduce errors. There is increasing recognition that non-technical skills, including communication and relationships, greatly impact interprofessional team performance and health care quality. Team familiarity and size are critical structural components that potentially influence information flow, communication, and efficiency.

Introduction: Overweight and obesity trends are on the rise among both civilian and military beneficiaries. The purpose of this narrative review was to evaluate nutrition, behavioral, lifestyle, pharmacotherapy, and alternative approaches to weight management (WM) among adults with a focus toward identifying gaps and evidence-based strategies that could support or enhance current and future WM programming among military adult beneficiaries.
Materials And Methods: A trained research team identified publications (January 2013-January 2020) for abstract review using key search terms and inclusion criteria.

Adverse surgical events cause negative patient health outcomes and harm that can often overshadow the safe and effective patient care provided daily by nurses as members of interprofessional healthcare teams. Near misses occur far more frequently than adverse events and are less visible to nurse leaders because patient harm is avoided due to chance, prevention, or mitigation. However, near misses have comparable root causes to adverse events and exhibit the same underlying patterns of failure.

Substance Use Disorder Clinic, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Landstuhl 66849, Germany.
Introduction: This article reviews process and performance of an innovative effort leveraging virtual health to manage unmet demand for behavioral health and substance use disorder services across a large military region. This effort began in June 2022 and included nearly all of the Defense Health Agency Region-Europe's military behavioral health and substance abuse clinics participating. The two goals of improving access to behavioral health and substance use services for active duty service members and improving utilization of the military clinics were employed.

Background: Cerebellar tonsillar reduction or resection can be performed as part of the surgical management of Chiari type 1 malformation when it is accompanied by symptomatic brainstem compression or syringomyelia. The purpose of this study is to characterize the early postoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in patients with Chiari type 1 malformations who undergo cerebellar tonsillar reduction via electrocautery.
Methods: The extent of cytotoxic edema and microhemorrhages demonstrated on MRI scans obtained within 9 days following surgery was assessed and correlated with neurological symptoms.

Imaging is essential for evaluating patients with glioblastoma. Traditionally a multimodality undertaking, CT, including CT cerebral blood profusion, PET/CT with traditional fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (F-FDG), and MRI have been the mainstays for diagnosis and post-therapeutic assessment. However, recent advances in these modalities, in league with the emerging fields of radiomics and theranostics, may prove helpful in improving diagnostic accuracy and treating the disease.

Background: Nonunion remains the most common major complication of ankle arthrodesis. Although previous studies have reported delayed union or nonunion rates, few have elaborated on the clinical course of patients experiencing delayed union. In this retrospective cohort study, we sought to understand the trajectory of patients with delayed union by determining the rate of clinical success and failure and whether the extent of fusion on computed tomography scan (CT) was associated with outcomes.

Objectives: This study aims to describe which concussion subtype(s) result specifically from the explosions of theatre ballistic missiles (TBMs) blast waves, an extremely rare occurrence in modern warfare. We provide feedback from using the US military's standard acute concussion screening tool, the Military Acute Concussion Examination version 2, in a deployed, chaotic, real-world environment.
Background: Iran launched 27 professionally manufactured TBMs into Iraq on 8 January 2020.

The first written guide for birth plans was introduced in 1980 as a means for birthing people to document their choices in the child birthing experience. The birth plan offers an opportunity for the patient and the provider to discuss the birthing process and determine how to safely accommodate patient preferences. Patient satisfaction with birthing plans is variable and may depend on how many requests they have, how many of their plans are accomplished, route of delivery, and whether complications arise during or after delivery.

Objective: Critical Care Air Transport (CCAT) teams care for critically ill or injured patients during long-duration flights. Despite the differences between the CCAT domain and a more traditional clinical setting, CCAT clinicians are not explicitly trained how to coordinate care in the aircraft environment. We characterized the team coordination patterns adopted by CCAT teams and explored any links between team coordination style and performance.

Antibiotics and drainage have largely replaced hepatic resection for the treatment of liver abscesses in the modern era; however, in cases caused by a rare strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae with a hypermucoviscous phenotype, more aggressive hepatic resection may be required. The patient is a 34-year-old male who presented to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center with a week of epigastric pain. His workup revealed a 6 cm liver abscess with growth to 10 cm in 48 hours.

Advanced imaging techniques are needed to assist in providing a prognosis for patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI), particularly mild TBI (mTBI). Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is one promising advanced imaging technique, but has shown variable results in patients with TBI and is not without limitations, especially when considering individual patients. Efforts to resolve these limitations are being explored and include developing advanced diffusion techniques, creating a normative database, improving study design, and testing machine learning algorithms.

Background: Differentiating among the different types of parotid tumors on imaging is useful for guiding clinical disposition, which ultimately may lead to surgical management. The goal of this study was to determine whether quantitative T2 signal characteristics and morphologic features on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can serve as predictive biomarkers for distinguishing between tumor types.
Methods: A retrospective review of T2-weighted MRIs in patients with pathology-proven parotid tumors was performed.

MRI plays an important role in the evaluation of glioblastoma, both at initial diagnosis and follow up after treatment. Quantitative analysis radiomics can augment the interpretation of MRI in terms of providing insights regarding the differential diagnosis, genotype, treatment response, and prognosis. The various MRI radiomic features of glioblastoma are reviewed in this article.

Introduction: Female warfighters are at risk for sex-specific and frequently unrecognized urogenital health challenges that may impede their ability to serve. The constraints on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) resources by austere environments, whether at home or abroad, require women to practice unhealthy hygiene behaviors that jeopardize their urogenital health. In this manuscript, we examine the use of WASH resources by U.
