The effects of bilateral focal cooling of dorsolateral thoracic spinal cord on segmental reflex pathways to the triceps surae muscles were assessed in decerebrate cats from the reflex forces produced by single shocks or trains of electrical stimuli applied to the ipsilateral caudal cutaneous sural and the contralateral tibial nerves. The validity of the dorsal cold block technique as a substitute for acute surgical dorsal hemisection was established by showing that focal cooling reliably reproduced the stretch-induced "clasp knife" inhibition of triceps surae reflexive force seen following dorsal hemisection. Under control (warm) conditions, the inhibitory components of electrically evoked ipsilateral sural and contralateral tibial reflexes faded rapidly during sustained trains, with a resultant production of large-amplitude reflex force as measured from either the entire triceps surae or from the medial gastrocnemius muscle alone.

1. Steady-state postsynaptic potentials (PSPs) were generated by prolonged (approximately 1 s) high-frequency (100-200 Hz) electrical stimulation of nerves in the cat hindlimb. The characteristics of these steady-state PSPs were compared for two polysynaptic afferent pathways (ipsilateral cutaneous sural vs.

1. The effects of different types of synaptic input on the steady-state input-output relations of the mammalian motoneuron pool were investigated by the use of computer simulations. The properties of the simulated motor units and their synaptic inputs were based as closely as possible on the experimental data from studies in the cat hindlimb.

The release of reports of inquiries into two related psychiatric hospitals (Lakeside and Aradale) in Victoria occurred in 1991. These inquiries identified deficiencies in patient care standards and organisational dynamics. Knowledge of institutional dysfunction was available from similar Australian and overseas inquiries but nonetheless this knowledge had not prevented organisational inertia and decline in these two psychiatric hospitals.

Podiatric physicians see great numbers of patients with vascular insufficiency of the lower extremities. Vascular disease may be the cause of their presenting complaints or may be an incidental finding recognized on routine podiatric examination. Each of these situations may require immediate attention.

A variety of surgical procedures traditionally have been employed in the treatment of tailor's bunions and sub-fifth metatarsal head keratomas. The overwhelming majority of literature on this subject evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of various fifth metatarsal osteotomies. The authors have initiated a preliminary investigative study to evaluate the effectiveness of fifth metatarsal head resection and to compare these results with those of other studies that have focused on osteotomy techniques.

N-Acetylcysteine is useful as a mucolytic agent for treatment of chronic bronchitis and other pulmonary diseases complicated by the production of viscous mucus. It is also used as an antidote to paracetamol (acetaminophen) poisoning and found to be effective for the prevention of cardiotoxicity by doxorubicin and haemorrhagic cystitis from oxazaphosphorines. After an oral dose of N-acetylcysteine 200 to 400 mg the peak plasma concentration of 0.

Atypical mycobacterial infections play an important role in human pathogenicity. Mycobacterium avium complex has been reported to occur in 17% to 50% of individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus. In the southwestern United States, Mycobacterium kansasii is reported to be a predominate mycobacterial infection in middle-aged men.

Bupropion was added to lithium and/or levothyroxine in four female and two male bipolar II patients who had established baselines of at least 2 years of rapid cycling that had not responded to several of the most commonly used anticycling interventions. Although all six patients improved significantly, the response was dramatic in four (three female, one male) and is still sustained after an average of 2 years of continued treatment. Furthermore, unlike what happened in their prior course with more conventional antidepressants, none developed hypomania nor was rapid cycling observed during the course of continued pharmacotherapy.

Without appropriate treatment this disease is fatal within 2 months of development, and mortality is closely associated with the stage of disease upon initiation of chemotherapy. Initial lumbar puncture reveals smear-positive acid-fast bacilli in up to 40% in most series; however, repeat examinations increase the yield, via direct smear, to as high as 87%.

Clofazimine is useful in the treatment of Hansen's disease (leprosy) and some dermatological disorders, and is currently being used in drug regimens for patients with human immunodeficiency viral infections who are also infected with Mycobacterium avium complex. After an oral dose, absorption is variable, but when given in an oil-wax suspension is approximately 70%. Administration with food appears to increase the peak plasma drug concentration and reduce the time to peak level.

The literature is reviewed for contact dermatitis associated with transdermal therapeutic systems. Clonidine, nitroglycerin, scopolamine, estradiol and testosterone are utilized in such applications, and fentanyl is under investigation. Most cutaneous reactions are limited to localized dermatitis; however, generalized systemic effects may occur.

A large number of adolescents in a psychiatric population, particularly those who are chemically dependent, prefer to listen to heavy metal music. Young people who do not identify with traditional values may find simple but unconventional answers to complex problems in the lyrics of this type of music. While a clearcut relationship cannot be established between heavy metal music and destructive behavior, evidence shows that such music promotes and supports patterns of drug abuse, promiscuous sexual activity, and violence.

In solubility studies of 7 acid hydrolases, the extent of solubilization by sonic disruption varied with the enzyme species and increased with increasing pH and Triton X-100 concentration of the suspension medium. Hydrolases in the nerve-ending (NE) fraction were more resistant to solubilization than those in the mitochondrial-lysosomal (M-L) fraction, but nearly quantitative solubilization was attained by sonication in an alkaline buffer containing 0,5% Triton X-100. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of extracts revealed multiple components of acid phosphatase, acid esterase, arylsulfatase,β-glucuronidase, andβ-N-acetyl-hexosaminidase.

Rabbits, convalescent from vaccinia and in good general health, were subjected to infection with myxoma during a period of exposure to a high external temperature. It was observed that in proportion as the temperature was elevated, a profound change in the course of the myxoma infection occurred. At the highest temperatures, the disease was held completely in abeyance, and no lesions appeared within 17 days of observation.

A study has been made of the comparative virulence of several strains of vaccine virus for a number of hosts, and wide variation in animal susceptibility has been demonstrated. The results obtained in experiments with a chick-embryo-adapted strain are interpreted as indicating that the particles of virus are of essentially uniform virulence. Results of statistical analyses are presented which indicate that as the virulence of a strain of virus increases the number of elementary bodies per infectious unit approaches 1, and at that limit the chance of infection is governed primarily by the presence or absence of virus in the inoculum.
