Background: Percutaneous ultrasound-guided renal biopsy (PRB) is a key element for diagnosis and management of several renal pathologies. We aimed to lay out the experience of our pediatric nephrology unit performing PRBs. The rationale and findings of these biopsies, safety issues and considerations of the extracted data are going to be analyzed.

The first identification of a novel α1-Globin variant, Hb Ormylia in 11 Greeks originating from a small village, Ormylia, Chalkidiki, Greece is reported. The new genetic variant leads to the production of a hemoglobin variant that can be identified and quantified by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography. Capillary and classic electrophoresis were not informative.

Sensitization to food and airborne allergens is common in the majority of patients with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Although there is not a direct cause-effect relationship of IgE-mediated allergy with the pathogenesis of EoE, there is a growing evidence that oral desensitization to food and sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) may induce the development of EoE as an adverse effect. As part of the 'EoE and Allergen Immunotherapy (AIT)' Task Force funded by the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), a systematic approach will be followed to review the evidence from the published scientific literature on the development of EoE in children and adults under any type of AIT.

Evidence indicates that SARS-CoV-2 infection increases the likelihood of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Modifications in the circulatory, pulmonary, hormonal, and immunological pathways induced by pregnancy render pregnant women as a high-risk group. A growing body of research shows that SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy is connected to a number of maternal complications, including pneumonia and intensive care unit (ICU) hospitalization.

We report the hematological data of the codon 7 (AG>AG (: c.22G>T) mutation for the first time in two Albanian individuals from the region of Elbasan, who underwent genetic testing due to prenatal counseling and diagnosis for β-thalassemia major (β-TM) anemia. The phenotype was compatible with a typical β-thalassemia (β-thal) carrier but the hematological findings of the mutation has not been previously reported.

The rare hemoglobin (Hb) variant Hb Natal [α140(HC2)Tyr-Arg→0 (: c.423C>A)], detected on the α2-globin gene, is characterized by a shortened polypeptide chain because of a premature stop codon formation in codon 140. Here, we report identification of the same genetic variation but in the corresponding position of the α1-globin gene, in a heterozygous state, in five members of a Greek family.

Background: Hereditary angioedema (HAE) related to C1 esterase-inhibitor deficiency activates the classic complement pathway and results to edematous crises. Although HAE is usually associated with multiple immunoregulatory disorders, neurologic manifestations are rare.
Case Report: We report on the case study of a 33-year-old man diagnosed with HAE (SERPIN1G gene mutation) and multiple sclerosis (MS), followed up for at least 6 years.

The significant heterogeneity in the clinical outcome among patients with bladder cancer has highlighted the existence of different biological subtypes of muscle-invasive and non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Transcriptional profiling studies revealed that primary bladder cancers can be grouped into 'intrinsic' basal and luminal molecular subtypes. Luminal tumors have a papillary configuration and express markers of urothelial differentiation (uroplakins, cytokeratin 20) fibroblast growth factor 3 (FGFR3), E-cadherin and early cell-cycle genes.

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols vs standard care pathways after esophagectomy for malignancy have gained wide popularity among surgeons. However, the current literature is still lacking level-I evidence to show a clear superiority of one approach. The present study is a detailed systematic review and meta-analysis of the published trials.

Background: Hepatitis C virus infectivity and replication efficiency appears to be dependent on the lipid content and organization of the plasma membrane of the host cell, as well as of the intracellular membranous web. As there is increasing awareness of a role played by the efflux pump ABCB1 (p-glycoprotein, P-gp) in lipid homeostasis, its function could be a determinant of chronic HCV infection. The aim of the present study was to examine and compare the distribution of common ABCB1 genotypes in patients with chronic HCV infection (n=168), hyperlipidemic patients (n=168) and a control group (n=173), all from Greece.

Introduction: Kidney transplantation can be complicated by infection and subsequent development of mycotic aneurysm, endangering the survival of the graft and the patient. Management of this condition in five cases is discussed, accompanied by a review of the relevant literature.
Case Presentations: Five patients, three men 42-, 67- and 57-years-old and two women 55- and 21-years-old (mean age of 48 years), all Caucasians, developed a mycotic aneurysm in the region of the anastomosis between renal graft artery and iliac axes.

A 39-year-old patient presented with poorly controlled hypertension, and she was referred to renal angiogram and potential renal angioplasty. Renal angiogram showed a bifurcation lesion of the right renal artery. A guide wire was used to cross the upper branch, while the lower branch was protected by another same-type guide wire through the same introducer.
