Objective: To assess 30-day outcomes of da Vinci robotic-assisted (dV-RAS) versus laparoscopic/thoracoscopic (lap/VATS) or open oncologic surgery.

Summary Background Data: Complex procedures in deep/narrow spaces especially benefit from dV-RAS. Prior procedure-specific comparisons are not generalizable.

Curriculum Innovations: Enhancing Skills in Serious Illness Communication in Neurology Residents Using Simulation: A Pilot Study.

Neurol Educ

September 2024

From the Department of Neurology (M.O.), Lahey Health and Medical Center, Burlington, MA; and Department of Neurology (B.S.), and Department of Palliative Care (J.R.,V.N.), University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School, Worcester.

Background And Problem Statement: Patients with acute ischemic stroke are faced with prognostic uncertainty, progressive decline, and early mortality. Many neurologists report a lack of education and experience in providing palliative care. We developed a simulation-based curriculum to improve residents' confidence and comfort with conducting late-stage goals of care (GOC) conversations.

Cutis

January 2024

Drs. Nathan and Tiger are from the Department of Dermatology, Lahey Health and Medical Center, Peabody, Massachusetts. Dr. O'Connor is from Dermatology and Skin Health, Dover, New Hampshire.

Readily available and comparatively inexpensive, the common alcohol swab can aid dermatologists in everything from diagnosis to preoperative and postoperative care. The 70% isopropyl alcohol swab can aid in the accurate diagnosis of lesions and skin conditions, identification of biopsy sites, and disinfection.

Objectives: Lip filler injections are one of the most popular procedures in esthetic dermatology. In this study, we used three-dimensional colorimetric photography to assess lip color and optical coherence tomography-angiography (OCT-A), a noninvasive alternative to histopathology, to evaluate microcirculation after hyaluronic acid (HA) injection. The pain of the injection procedure was also assessed.

Bilio-enteric fistulization is the aberrant connection between the biliary and luminal digestive tracts. The cholecystocolonic fistula (CCF) is the second most common bilio-enteric fistula (comprising 20% of cases), after the cholocystoduodenal fistula (comprising 70% of all cases). A CCF may result from malignancy or more benign etiologies, such as gallstones, and is thought to arise from a chronic inflammatory cadence of tissue necrosis, tissue perforation, and fistula creation.

Aims: To identify risk factors for urinary retention following AdVance™ Sling placement using preoperative urodynamic studies to evaluate bladder contractility.

Methods: A multi-institutional retrospective review of patients who underwent an AdVance Sling for post-prostatectomy stress urinary incontinence from 2007 to 2019 was performed. Acute urinary retention (AUR) was defined as the complete inability to void or elevated post-void residual (PVR) leading to catheter placement or the initiation of intermittent catheterization at the first void trial postoperatively.

The era of real-time radiotherapy is upon us. Robotic and gimbaled linac tracking are clinically established technologies with the clinical realization of couch tracking in development. Multileaf collimators (MLCs) are a standard equipment for most cancer radiotherapy systems, and therefore MLC tracking is a potentially widely available technology.

Background: Transplant glomerulitis is an active form of glomerular injury associated with suboptimal graft outcome, inadequate histologic reproducibility, and poorly understood pathogenesis. Using a modified pathologic schema where glomerular inflammation is defined by the presence of five or more leukocytes per glomerulus, we sought to assess the reproducibility of transplant glomerulitis and to prospectively investigate the pathogenesis of glomerular inflammation.

Methods: Our cohort includes 59 kidney transplant recipients who underwent 60 "for cause" allograft biopsies.
