Department of Population Health Sciences, School of Medicine, Duke University, 215 Morris Street, Durham, NC, 27708, USA.

There is conflicting evidence on the role of lipid biomarkers in breast cancer (BC), and no study to our knowledge has examined this association among African women. We estimated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for the association of lipid biomarkers-total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglycerides-with odds of BC overall and by subtype (Luminal A, Luminal B, HER2-enriched and triple-negative or TNBC) for 296 newly diagnosed BC cases and 116 healthy controls in Nigeria. Each unit standard deviation (SD) increase in triglycerides was associated with 39% increased odds of BC in fully adjusted models (aOR: 1.

Background: Sickle cell anemia is the commonest hemoglobinopathy in pregnant Nigerian women, and cardiac manifestations are a significant feature of the disease especially in pregnancy. Pregnant women with sickle cell anemia are at high risk of morbidity and mortality and cardiac dysfunction in them increases this risk and may compromise their post-partum health.

Objective: To evaluate the cardiac size and function in women with sickle cell anemia (HbSS) during late pregnancy and postpartum.

Previous pandemics have had significant impact on psychological well-being of front-line health care workers. Issues such as fear of contracting the disease, high workload as a result of high numbers of infected cases, increased job stress and unavailability of personal protective equipment have been implicated in development of psychological distress in this subset of individuals. The aim of the present paper is to describe psychobehavioral responses of health care workers and potential predictors of emotional response at onset of COVID- 19 outbreak in Nigeria.

Blood transfusion is an integral component in the management of children and adults with sickle cell disease (SCD). Concerns about blood safety due to the high risk of bloodborne infections in sub-Saharan Africa limits the application of this cost-effective strategy in the management of individuals with SCD. In a single-centre, retrospective, longitudinal study in southwest Nigeria, we hypothesised that the use of stringent blood donor selection, along with very sensitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) screening methods would reduce transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs).

The interplay of artemether-lumefantrine (AL) and atazanavir-ritonavir (ATVr) with Cytochrome (CYP) 3A4 isoenzyme and QTc-interval may spawn clinically significant drug interactions when administered concomitantly. Cardiotoxicity and other adverse effects associated with interaction between AL and ATVr were evaluated in patients with HIV infection and malaria comorbidity. In a two-arm parallel study design, six doses of AL 80/480 mg were administered to 20 participants [control-arm (n = 10) and ATVr-arm (n = 10)], having uncomplicated Falciparum malaria, at intervals of 0, 8, 24, 36, 48 and 60 h respectively.

Background: Inadequate consumption of fruit and vegetable is a risk factor for morbidity and mortality associated with non-communicable diseases (NCDs). An understanding of the barriers and facilitators to consumption is important for effectiveness of intervention in Africa. We present insights among church members before developing a church-based multi-component intervention to address the inadequate consumption of fruit and vegetable.

Objective: In a multicountry prospective cohort of persons with HIV from six countries between 2007 and 2015, we evaluated long-term outcomes of first-line non-nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitor-based antiretroviral therapy (ART), and risk factors for loss-to-follow-up, mortality, virological failure, and incomplete CD4 + T-cell recovery.

Methods: We calculated cumulative incidence of lost-to-follow-up, death, virological failure (VL ≥ 1000 cps/ml) and incomplete CD4 + T-cell recovery (<500 cells/μl) at successive years, using Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression.

Results: Of 2735 participants, 58.

Background And Objectives: Breakfast skipping has been associated with obesity among adolescents in some studies but little is known about the relationship between breakfast consumption and obesity among secondary-school adolescents in Nigeria. This study contributes to the empirical literature by analyzing the relationship between breakfast consumption and anthropometrically determined nutritional status of secondary-school adolescents in Lagos, Nigeria.

Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study in which multi-stage sampling was used to select 397 secondary-school adolescents (10 to 19 years, mean = 13.

Introduction: an increased risk of breast cancer associated with high socio-economic status has been reported in high income countries. A few available African studies have reported inconsistent findings using different single socio-economic measures. Our aim was to investigate the association between socio-economic status and the risk of breast cancer among Nigerian women based on a range of socio-economic status measures.

Accelerated Epigenetic Age Among Women with Invasive Cervical Cancer and HIV-Infection in Nigeria.

Front Public Health

May 2022

Department of Preventive Medicine, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, IL, United States.

Background: Invasive cervical cancer (ICC) is a serious public health burden in Nigeria, where human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains highly prevalent. Previous research suggested that epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) could play a role in detection of HIV-associated ICC. However, little research has been conducted on this topic in Africa where the population is most severely affected by HIV-associated ICC.

Cancer in sub-Saharan Africa: a Lancet Oncology Commission.

Lancet Oncol

June 2022

Radcliffe Department of Medicine, John Radcliffe Hospital, University of Oxford, Oxford, UK.

In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), urgent action is needed to curb a growing crisis in cancer incidence and mortality. Without rapid interventions, data estimates show a major increase in cancer mortality from 520 348 in 2020 to about 1 million deaths per year by 2030. Here, we detail the state of cancer in SSA, recommend key actions on the basis of analysis, and highlight case studies and successful models that can be emulated, adapted, or improved across the region to reduce the growing cancer crises.

Background: The impact of the corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on global health, has reached far beyond that caused by the disease itself. With ongoing mutations and the emergence of new strains of the virus alongside repeated waves of the pandemic, the full impact of the pandemic is still evolving and remains difficult to predict or evaluate. In paediatric surgery, it has led to significant disruptions in patient care, the extent and consequence of which are not fully documented in Nigeria.

BMJ Glob Health

April 2022

Department of Clinical Sciences in Lund, Pediatric Surgery, Skåne University Hospital in Lund, Faculty of Medicine, Lund University, Lund, Sweden.

Background: The shortage of surgeons, anaesthesiologists and obstetricians in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) is occasionally bridged by foreign surgical teams from high-income countries on short-term visits. To advise on ethical guidelines for such activities, the aim of this study was to present LMIC stakeholders' perceptions of visiting surgical teams from high-income countries.

Method: We performed a systematic review according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines in November 2021, using standardised search terms in PubMed/Medline (National Library of Medicine), EMBASE (Elsevier), Global Health Database (EBSCO) and Global Index Medicus, and complementary hand searches in African Journals Online and Google Scholar.
