Background: Mobile health has enormous potential in healthcare due to the increasing use of mobile phones in low- and middle-income countries; its effective deployment, uptake, and utilization may result in improved health outcomes, including a reduction in neonatal deaths. However, there is a suboptimal uptake of mobile health technologies among healthcare workers in low-resource settings like Nigeria, which are often context-specific.

Objective: To investigate healthcare workers' perceptions of mobile health technologies in public health facilities in Lagos, Nigeria.

Nigeria has endured several diphtheria outbreaks over the last few decades, mirroring a suboptimal population immunity across several demographics within the country. The country's northern region has been affected mainly by this infectious disease; it directly depicts the effect of poor DPT vaccine uptake amongst children in this region compared to other geopolitical zones in Nigeria. Whilst pharmaceutical intervention and surveillance activities have commenced as directed by the NCDC, to combat this public health menace, top leaders of the Nigerian healthcare system - public and private sectors, must understudy the predisposing factors gearing the recurrence of diphtheria in Nigeria and provide robust, research-based and scientific mechanisms to arrest the root causes of the incessant outbreaks.

Nigeria is one of the countries in the world with the highest burden of malaria, accounting for a quarter of all cases in Africa. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, microscopic examination remains the gold standard for laboratory confirmation of malaria. However, the policy and practice of presumptive treatment of malaria for all febrile illnesses has been widely advocated in sub-Saharan Africa.

Genetic determinants of periosteum-mediated craniofacial bone regeneration: a systematic review.

Arch Craniofac Surg

December 2023

Division of Head & Neck Cancer Oral, Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Lagos, Nigeria.

Background: Periosteum-mediated bone regeneration (PMBR) is a recognized method for mandibular reconstruction. Despite its unpredictable nature and the limited degree to which it is understood, it does not share the concerns of developmental changes to donor and recipient tissues that other treatment options do. The definitive role of the periosteum in bone regeneration in any mammal remains largely unexplored.

Worldwide, sub-Saharan Africa has the highest burden of global neonatal mortality (43%) and neonatal mortality rate (NMR): 27 deaths per 1,000 live births. The WHO recognizes palliative care (PC) as an integral, yet underutilized, component of perinatal care for pregnancies at risk of stillbirth or early neonatal death, and for neonates with severe prematurity, birth trauma or congenital anomalies. Despite bearing a disproportionate burden of neonatal mortality, many strategies to care for dying newborns and support their families employed in high-income countries (HICs) are not available in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs).

Women who had never undergone cervical screening (CS) or who have infrequent CS are at increased risk of having cervical epithelial cell abnormalities (CECA) that may lead to cervical cancer (CCa). Our study determined the pattern and factors that predict the occurrence of CECA among unscreened and under-screened women in Lagos, Nigeria. This was an analytical cross-sectional study among 256 consenting sexually active women between 21 and 65 years who attended a community CS programme in Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria, in June 2019.

Meningiomas are generally dura-based extra axial tumours without cystic components, whereas high-grade gliomas are intra-axial with or without cystic component. This case describes an adult female who presented with clinical and radiological features suggestive of a high-grade astrocytoma; however, histology diagnosis was papillary meningioma (World Health Organization Grade III). A 58-year-old female presented with a 4-month history of recurrent generalized tonic-clonic seizures and a 1-week history of altered sensorium.

Background: Raising awareness of antimicrobial resistance is a cornerstone of action plans to tackle this global One Health challenge. Tools that can reliably assess levels of awareness of antibiotic resistance (ABR) among human or animal healthcare professionals (HCPs) are required to guide and evaluate interventions.

Methods: We designed and tested an ABR awareness scale, a self-administered questionnaire completed by human and animal HCPs trained to prescribe and dispense antibiotics in six countries-Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Vietnam, Thailand and Peru.

Background: The 6-minute walk test (6MWT), a simple, reliable, and valid test that uses the distance walked in 6 minute walk distance (6MWD) to quantify functional capacity, is widely used in the management of chronic disorders. However, the absence of reference standards from sub-Saharan African, including Nigerian, school-aged children limits its utility in this age group.

Objectives: To develop normative values and equations for the 6MWD of school-aged Nigerian children.

Demographic Profile and Outcome in Surgically Managed Patients with Chronic Subdural Haematoma: A 9-Year Retrospective Cohort Study.

West Afr J Med

September 2021

Department of Anaesthesia, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Medicine, Lagos State University, Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria.

Background: Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is achronic inflammatory and angiogenic condition that is potentially fatal and common among the elderly with a probability of gender, racial and ethnic differences. As our population ages due to increase in our life expectancy, a closer look at this disease in our environment is therefore justified.

Objectives: Our objective is to evaluate the epidemiology, relationship of demography, procedure type and mode of anaesthesia on outcome in the patients.

Background And Objectives: Osteoporosis is a bone disease characterized by reduced bone density (and microarchitecture damage) prevalent in post-menopausal women, who are prone to fragility fractures. There is paucity of data regarding the prevalence of osteoporosis in Nigerian women. This study was carried out to evaluate the frequency of osteoporosis among Nigerian women with degenerative skeletal diseases and fractures who visited our hospital so as to suggest prevention and early treatment in order to reduce the occurrence of fragility fractures.

Introduction: Chronic subdural haematoma (CSH) has multifactorial mechanisms involved in its development and progression. Identifying readily available inflammatory and coagulation indices that can predict the prognosis of CSH will help in clinical care, prognosis, generating objective criteria for assessing efficacy of treatment strategies and comparisons of treatment efficacy between clinical studies. We conducted a study in which we evaluated the impact value of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), inflammatory biomarkers (erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), prothrombin time (PT) and international normalized ratio (INR) at presentation on CSH severity and outcome using Glasgow outcome scale (GOS), Markwalder grading scale (MGS) and Lagos brain disability examination scale (LABDES).
