Inverse association of highly chlorinated dioxin congeners in maternal breast milk with dehydroepiandrosterone levels in three-year-old Vietnamese children.

Environment Administration, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, 67 Nguyen Du Street, Hanoi, Viet Nam.

This study aims to evaluate the endocrine-disrupting effect of dioxin congeners on adrenal steroid hormones in mother-child pairs. In our previous study, we found that cortisol and cortisone levels were higher in the blood and the saliva of mothers living in a dioxin hotspot area than in mothers from a non-exposed region in Vietnam. In this follow-up study, we determined the salivary steroid hormone levels in 49 and 55 three-year-old children of these mothers in the hotspot and non-exposed region, respectively.

In this study, the performance of poly(layered double hydroxides) [poly(LDHs)] beads as an adsorbent for arsenate removal from aqueous solution was investigated. The poly(LDHs) beads were prepared by immobilizing LDHs into spherical alginate/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-glutaraldehyde beads (spherical polymer beads). Batch adsorption studies were conducted to assess the effect of contact time, solution pH, initial arsenate concentrations and co-existing anions on arsenate removal performance.

Influence of dioxin exposure upon levels of prostate-specific antigen and steroid hormones in Vietnamese men.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

April 2016

Environment Administration, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Hanoi, Vietnam.

Most studies on the relationship between Agent Orange and prostate cancer have focused on US veterans of the Vietnam War. There have been few studies focusing on the relationship between levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and dioxins or steroid hormones in Vietnamese men. In 2009-2011, we collected blood samples from 97 men who had resided in a "dioxin hotspot" and 85 men from a non-sprayed region in Vietnam.

A novel semi-supervised algorithm for the taxonomic assignment of metagenomic reads.

BMC Bioinformatics

Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering, HCMC University of Technology, 268 Ly Thuong Kiet, Q10, HCM City, Vietnam.

Background: Taxonomic assignment is a crucial step in a metagenomic project which aims to identify the origin of sequences in an environmental sample. Among the existing methods, since composition-based algorithms are not sufficient for classifying short reads, recent algorithms use only the feature of similarity, or similarity-based combined features. However, those algorithms suffer from the computational expense because the task of similarity search is very time-consuming.

A study of the strategic alliance for EMS industry: the application of a hybrid DEA and GM (1, 1) approach.

Department of Industrial Engineering and Management, National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences, 415 Jiangong, Sanmin District, Kaohsiung 807, Taiwan.

Choosing a partner is a critical factor for success in international strategic alliances, although criteria for partner selection vary between developed and transitional markets. This study aims to develop effective methods to assist enterprise to measure the firms' operation efficiency, find out the candidate priority under several different inputs and outputs, and forecast the values of those variables in the future. The methodologies are constructed by the concepts of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and grey model (GM).

Integrated DEA models and grey system theory to evaluate past-to-future performance: a case of Indian electricity industry.

ScientificWorldJournal

International Relations Office, Lac Hong University, No. 10 Huynh Van Nghe, Bien Hoa, Dong Nai, Vietnam.

The growth of economy and population together with the higher demand in energy has created many concerns for the Indian electricity industry whose capacity is at 211 gigawatts mostly in coal-fired plants. Due to insufficient fuel supply, India suffers from a shortage of electricity generation, leading to rolling blackouts; thus, performance evaluation and ranking the industry turn into significant issues. By this study, we expect to evaluate the rankings of these companies under control of the Ministry of Power.

A two-phase binning algorithm using l-mer frequency on groups of non-overlapping reads.

Algorithms Mol Biol

February 2015

Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering, HCMC University of Technology, 268 Ly Thuong Kiet, Q10, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Background: Metagenomics is the study of genetic materials derived directly from complex microbial samples, instead of from culture. One of the crucial steps in metagenomic analysis, referred to as "binning", is to separate reads into clusters that represent genomes from closely related organisms. Among the existing binning methods, unsupervised methods base the classification on features extracted from reads, and especially taking advantage in case of the limitation of reference database availability.

Levels of polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans in breast milk samples from three dioxin-contaminated hotspots of Vietnam.

Sci Total Environ

April 2015

Environment Administration, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, 67 Nguyen Du Street, Hanoi, Viet Nam.

We determined polychlorinated dibenzodioxin (PCDD) and polychlorinated dibenzofuran (PCDF) levels in breast milk of 143 primiparae living around the three most dioxin-contaminated areas of Vietnam. The women sampled lived in the vicinity of former U.S.
