Background: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) can lead to cognitive impairment, but underlying neural mechanisms remain to be elucidated.

Materials And Methods: To predict long-term cognitive impairment after aSAH, resting electroencephalography (EEG) was measured in 112 patients hospitalized with a diagnosis of aSAH (n = 66) or unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIA; controls) (n = 46). A neuropsychological battery was administered 8 to 24 months after discharge.

Xiangya School of Public Health, Central South University, Changsha, Hunan, 410078, PR China; Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of Clinical Epidemiology, Changsha, Hunan, 410078, PR China. Electronic address:

The widespread presence of antibiotic residues in the environment and food represents a significant threat to human health. In this study, a novel MOF-on-MOF (FCZE) gel with excellent peroxidase activity and strong fluorescence properties successfully synthesized by using Polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as a cross-linker and H₄BTEC as a ligand. Based on the energy transfer from the FCZE ligand to Eu luminescence, an ultrasensitive fluorescence method was developed for the detection of chlortetracycline (CTC), achieving a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.

October 2024

School of Public Health, The Key Laboratory of Environmental Pollution Monitoring and Disease Control, Ministry of Education, Guizhou Medical University, Guiyang 550025, P. R. China.

Ambient ozone (O) exposure may be associated with a reduction of semen quality, yet the potential biological mechanisms remain unclear. We investigated the effects of certain seminal plasma metabolites on mediating the links between O exposure and the deterioration of semen quality. The untargeted metabolomics analysis was performed on semen samples of 200 Chinese adult men to determine candidate metabolites associated with characteristics of semen quality.

Microcystin-LR (MC-LR), the most prevalent and diverse cyanotoxin produced by harmful cyanobacterial blooms, has been linked to gastrointestinal toxicity. Therefore, we conducted a case-control study across four regions in China to investigate this relationship. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) cases (219) were matched with healthy controls (438) based on age and gender and conditional logistic regression models and Restricted cubic splines were used to evaluate the association between MC-LR exposure and IBD risk.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the link between systemic inflammation and clinical outcomes in patients with tuberculous meningitis (TBM), suggesting that high levels of systemic inflammation are linked to worse neurological outcomes.
  • Data was collected on 1,203 TBM patients, revealing that post-treatment inflammation levels significantly correlates with early neurological deterioration and poor functional outcomes.
  • Dexamethasone treatment did not show a significant effect on neurological deterioration or poor outcomes in patients with high systemic inflammation, indicating a need for further research in more severely affected individuals to understand treatment effectiveness better.

Background: There is no ubiquitous definition of Emergency Department (ED) crowding and several indicators have been proposed to measure it. The National ED Overcrowding Study (NEDOCS) score is among the most popular, even though it has been severely criticised. We used the waiting time for the physician's initial assessment to evaluate the performance of the NEDOCS and proposed a new crowding indicator based on this objective measure.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPis), known for causing synthetic lethality in tumor cells, also influence the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) to help fight tumors, although the specifics are still unclear.
  • - Researchers used T-cell receptor (TCR) sequencing and various imaging techniques on clinical samples and mouse models to explore immune responses triggered by PARPis, particularly focusing on a process called immunogenic cell death (ICD) linked to pyroptosis.
  • - Results showed that PARPis increased TCR clonal expansion and promoted a more inflamed TIME with more immune cell infiltration, specifically highlighting pyroptosis as a critical mechanism through which PARPis activate the immune response against tumors

Association between Visceral Adiposity Index and Hyperuricemia among Steelworkers: The Moderating Effects of Drinking Tea.

Nutrients

September 2024

Department of Epidemiology and Health Statistics, Xiangya School of Public Health, Central South University, No.172 Tongzipo Road, Yuelu District, Changsha 410013, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Steelworkers experience a higher prevalence of hyperuricemia (approximately 23.74%) due to unique occupational factors and dietary habits, particularly with a positive correlation found between visceral adiposity index (VAI) and hyperuricemia risk.
  • The study analyzed over 9,000 steelworkers, revealing that as VAI increased, the risk of hyperuricemia significantly rose, with females showing a higher increase compared to males across different VAI quartiles.
  • Drinking tea was associated with reduced uric acid levels among male steelworkers and those consuming smoked or pickled foods, suggesting a potential protective effect against hyperuricemia from tea consumption.

  • Thermal ablation (TA) is an effective treatment for benign thyroid nodules (BTNs), but the study seeks to determine the optimal maximum diameter (MD) for effective results.
  • Analyzing data from 639 BTNs, the study finds that the complete disappearance rate is significantly linked to the MD, with an optimal threshold identified at 25.0 mm.
  • Results show that BTNs larger than 25.0 mm have a lower chance of complete disappearance and a higher rate of complications compared to smaller nodules.
