The concept of soliton gas was introduced in 1971 by Zakharov as an infinite collection of weakly interacting solitons in the framework of Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. In this theoretical construction of a diluted (rarefied) soliton gas, solitons with random amplitude and phase parameters are almost nonoverlapping. More recently, the concept has been extended to dense gases in which solitons strongly and continuously interact.

For the first time, we report calorimetric measurements of intrusion of aqueous LiCl solutions in a hydrophobic pure siliceous MFI zeolite (silicalite-1) under high pressure. Our results show that the intrusion heats are strongly dependent on the LiCl concentration. The intrusion process is endothermic for diluted solutions (molar HO/LiCl = 12) as well as for water, but it becomes exothermic for a concentration close to saturation (molar HO/LiCl = 4).

We investigate theoretically and numerically the dynamics of long-living oscillating coherent structures-bi-solitons-in the exact and approximate models for waves on the free surface of deep water. We generate numerically the bi-solitons of the approximate Dyachenko-Zakharov equation and fully nonlinear equations propagating without significant loss of energy for hundreds of the structure oscillation periods, which is hundreds of thousands of characteristic periods of the surface waves. To elucidate the long-living bi-soliton complex nature we apply an analytical-numerical approach based on the perturbation theory and the inverse scattering transform (IST) for the one-dimensional focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation model.

Integrated quantum photonic circuits require the efficient coupling of photon sources to photonic waveguides. Hybrid plasmonic/photonic platforms are a promising approach, taking advantage of both plasmon modal confinement for efficient coupling to a nearby emitter and photonic circuitry for optical data transfer and processing. In this work, we established directional quantum dot (QD) emission coupling to a planar TiOwaveguide assisted by a Yagi-Uda antenna.

Physics Department, The University of Auckland, Private Bag 92019, Auckland, 1142, New Zealand.

We investigate experimentally and theoretically a system ruled by an intricate interplay between topology, nonlinearity, and spontaneous symmetry breaking. The experiment is based on a two-mode coherently-driven optical resonator where photons interact through the Kerr nonlinearity. In presence of a phase defect, the modal structure acquires a synthetic Möbius topology enabling the realization of spontaneous symmetry breaking in inherently bias-free conditions without fine tuning of parameters.

Nanoparticles (NPs) in contact with biological fluids form a biomolecular corona through interactions with proteins, lipids, and sugars, acquiring new physicochemical properties. This work explores the interaction between selected proteins (hemoglobin and fetuin-A) that may alter NP circulation time and NPs of different surface charges (neutral, positive, and negative). The interaction with key proteins albumin and transferrin, the two of the most abundant proteins in plasma was also studied.

The biological behavior and fate of nanoparticles are dependent on their retention time in the blood circulation system. The protein corona components, especially opsonins, and dysopsonins, adsorbed on the nanoparticle surface determine their blood circulation time. The protein corona formation is a dynamic process that involves the competition between different proteins to be adsorbed on the nanoparticles.

Spatial localizing of skeletal proteins in biogenic minerals remains a challenge in biomineralization research. To address this goal, we developed a novel in situ mapping technique based on molecular recognition measurements via atomic force microscopy (AFM), which requires three steps: (1) the development and purification of a polyclonal antibody elicited against the target protein, (2) its covalent coupling to a silicon nitride AFM tip ('functionalization'), and (3) scanning of an appropriately prepared biomineral surface. We applied this approach to a soluble shell protein - accripin11 - recently identified as a major component of the calcitic prisms of the fan mussel Pinna nobilis [1].

The therapeutic efficacy and adverse impacts of nanoparticles (NPs) are strongly dependent on their systemic circulation time. The corona proteins adsorbed on the NPs determine their plasma half-lives, and hence, it is crucial to identify the proteins shortening or extending their circulation time. In this work, the circulation time and corona composition of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) with different surface charges/chemistries were analyzed over time.

We investigate the extent to which a two-level quantum system subjected to an external time-dependent drive can be characterized by supervised learning. We apply this approach to the case of bang-bang control and the estimation of the offset and the final distance to a given target state. For any control protocol, the goal is to find the mapping between the offset and the distance.

Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire Carnot de Bourgogne (ICB), UMR CNRS 6303, Université de Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, 9 Avenue Alain Savary, 21078, Dijon Cedex, France.

Significant efforts have been done in last two decades to develop nanoscale spectroscopy techniques owning to their great potential for single-molecule structural detection and in addition, to resolve open questions in heterogeneous biological systems, such as protein-DNA complexes. Applying IR-AFM technique has become a powerful leverage for obtaining simultaneous absorption spectra with a nanoscale spatial resolution for studied proteins, however the AFM-IR investigation of DNA molecules on surface, as a benchmark for a nucleoprotein complexes nanocharacterization, has remained elusive. Herein, we demonstrate methodological approach for acquisition of AFM-IR mapping modalities with corresponding absorption spectra based on two different DNA deposition protocols on spermidine and Ni pretreated mica surface.

We use europium doped single crystalline NaYFnanorods for probing the electric and magnetic contributions to the local density of optical states (LDOS). Reciprocically, we determine intrinsic properties of the emitters (oscillator strength, quantum yield) by comparing their measured and simulated optical responses in front of a mirror. We first experimentally determine the specifications of the nanoprobe (orientation and oscillator strength of the electric and magnetic dipoles moments) and show significant orientation sensitivity of the branching ratios associated with electric and magnetic transitions.

Three-qubit-embedded split Cayley hexagon is contextuality sensitive.

Astronomical Institute, Slovak Academy of Sciences, 05960, Tatranská Lomnica, Slovak Republic.

In this article, we show that sets of three-qubit quantum observables obtained by considering both the classical and skew embeddings of the split Cayley hexagon of order two into the binary symplectic polar space of rank three can be used to detect quantum state-independent contextuality. This reveals a fundamental connection between these two appealing structures and some fundamental tools in quantum mechanics and quantum computation. More precisely, we prove that the complement of a classically embedded hexagon does not provide a Mermin-Peres-like proof of the Kochen-Specker theorem whereas that of a skewly-embedded one does.

Ultrasmall gold nanoparticles (NPs) stabilized in networks by polymantane ligands (diamondoids) were successfully used as precatalysts for highly selective heterogeneous gold-catalyzed dimethyl allyl(propargyl)malonate cyclization to 5-membered conjugated diene. Such reaction usually suffers from selectivity issues with homogeneous catalysts. This control over selectivity further opened the way to one-pot cascade reaction, as illustrated by the 1,6-enyne cycloisomerization-Diels-Alder reaction of dimethyl allyl propargyl malonate with maleic anhydride.

Identifying G-Quadruplex-DNA-Disrupting Small Molecules.

J Am Chem Soc

August 2021

Institut de Chimie Moléculaire, ICMUB CNRS UMR 6302, UBFC, 21078 Dijon, France.

The quest for small molecules that strongly bind to G-quadruplex-DNA (G4), so-called G4 ligands, has invigorated the G4 research field from its very inception. Massive efforts have been invested to discover or rationally design G4 ligands, evaluate their G4-interacting properties in vitro through a series of now widely accepted and routinely implemented assays, and use them as innovative chemical biology tools to interrogate cellular networks that might involve G4s. In sharp contrast, only uncoordinated efforts aimed at developing small molecules that destabilize G4s have been invested to date, even though it is now recognized that such molecular tools would have tremendous application in neurobiology as many genetic and age-related diseases are caused by an overrepresentation of G4s.
