In a 2D electron system (2DES) the breaking of the inversion, time-reversal and bulk crystal-field symmetries is interlaced with the effects of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) triggering exotic quantum phenomena. Here, epitaxial engineering is used to design and realize a 2DES characterized simultaneously by ferromagnetic order, large Rashba SOC and hexagonal band warping at the (111) interfaces between LaAlO, EuTiO, and SrTiO insulators. The 2DES displays anomalous quantum corrections to the magneto-conductance driven by the time-reversal-symmetry breaking occurring below the magnetic transition temperature.

Exerting a nonequilibrium drive on an otherwise equilibrium Langevin process brings the dynamics out of equilibrium but can also speed up the approach to the Boltzmann steady state. Transverse forces are a minimal framework to achieve dynamical acceleration of the Boltzmann sampling. We consider a simple liquid in three space dimensions subjected to additional transverse pairwise forces, and quantify the extent to which transverse forces accelerate the dynamics.

Monte Carlo simulations are widely employed to measure the physical properties of glass-forming liquids in thermal equilibrium. Combined with local Monte Carlo moves, the Metropolis algorithm can also be used to simulate the relaxation dynamics, thus offering an efficient alternative to molecular dynamics. Monte Carlo simulations are, however, more versatile because carefully designed Monte Carlo algorithms can more efficiently sample the rugged free energy landscape characteristic of glassy systems.

Unconventional Thermophotonic Charge Density Wave.

Phys Rev Lett

August 2024

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore, Singapore 117583, Singapore.

Charge-order states of broken symmetry, such as charge density wave (CDW), are able to induce exceptional physical properties, however, the precise understanding of the underlying physics is still elusive. Here, we combine fluctuational electrodynamics and density functional theory to reveal an unconventional thermophotonic effect in CDW-bearing TiSe_{2}, referred to as thermophotonic-CDW (tp-CDW). The interplay of plasmon polariton and CDW electron excitations give rise to an anomalous negative temperature dependency in thermal photons transport, offering an intuitive fingerprint for a transformation of the electron order.

We explore the dynamics of a simple liquid whose particles, in addition to standard potential-based interactions, are also subjected to transverse forces preserving the Boltzmann distribution. We derive the effective dynamics of one and two tracer particles in the infinite-dimensional limit. We determine the amount of acceleration of the dynamics caused by the transverse forces, in particular in the vicinity of the glass transition.

We study two models of overdamped self-propelled disks in two dimensions, with and without aligning interactions. Both models support active mesoscale flows, leading to chaotic advection and transport over large length scales in their homogeneous dense fluid states, away from dynamical arrest. They form streams and vortices reminiscent of multiscale flow patterns in turbulence.

Although large efforts have been made to improve the growth of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) by heteroepitaxy, the non-native substrates remain a fundamental factor that limits the quality. This problem can be solved by homoepitaxy, which is the growth of hBN on hBN substrates. In this report, we demonstrate the homoepitaxial growth of triangular BN grains on exfoliated hBN flakes by Metal-Organic Vapor Phase Epitaxy and show by atomic force microscopy and photoluminescence that the stacking of these triangular islands can deviate from the AA' stacking of hBN.

In recent experiments, unprecedentedly large values for the conductivity of electrolytes through carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been measured, possibly owing to flow slip and a high pore surface charge density whose origin remains debated. Here, we model the coupling between the CNT capacitance and the electrolyte-filled pore one and study how electrolyte transport is modulated when a gate voltage is applied to the CNT. Our work shows that under certain conditions the quantum capacitance is lower than the pore one due to the finite quasi-1D CNT electronic density of states and therefore controls the CNT surface charge density that dictates the confined electrolyte conductivity.

The addition of water to native cellulose/1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate solutions catalyzes the formation of gels, where polymer chain-chain intermolecular associations act as cross-links. However, the relationship between water content (), polymer concentration (), and gel strength is still missing. This study provides the fundamentals to design water-induced gels.

Optical metasurfaces are two-dimensional assemblies of nanoscale optical resonators and could constitute the next generation of ultrathin optical components. The development of methods to manufacture these nanostructures on a large scale is still a challenge, while most performance demonstrations were obtained with lithographically fabricated metasurfaces that are restricted to small scales. Self-assembly fabrication routes are promising alternatives and have been used to produce original nanoresonators.

Laboratoire Charles-Coulomb, UMR 5221 CNRS, Université de Montpellier, Campus Triolet, Place Eugène-Bataillon - CC069, F-34095, Montpellier Cedex 5, France. Electronic address:

Plastic pollution in the aquatic environment has been assessed for many years by ocean waste collection expeditions around the globe or by river sampling. While the total amount of plastic produced worldwide is well documented, the amount of plastic found in the ocean, the distribution of particles on its surface and its evolution over time are still the subject of much debate. In this article, we propose a general fragmentation model, postulating the existence of a critical size below which particle fragmentation becomes extremely unlikely.

Sampling the Boltzmann distribution using forces that violate detailed balance can be faster than with the equilibrium evolution, but the acceleration depends on the nature of the nonequilibrium drive and the physical situation. Here, we study the efficiency of forces transverse to energy gradients in dense liquids through a combination of techniques: Brownian dynamics simulations, exact infinite-dimensional calculation, and a mode-coupling approximation. We find that the sampling speedup varies nonmonotonically with temperature, and decreases as the system becomes more glassy.

The interplay of soft responsive particles, such as microgels, with nanoparticles (NPs) yields highly versatile complexes that show great potential for applications, ranging from plasmonic sensing to catalysis and drug delivery. However, the microgel-NP assembly process has not been investigated so far at the microscopic level, thus hindering the possibility of designing such hybrid systems a priori. In this work, we combine state-of-the-art numerical simulations with experiments to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms taking place when microgel-NP assembly is controlled by electrostatic interactions and the associated effects on the structure of the resulting complexes.

Core-shell nanoparticles (CSNPs) are widely used in energy harvesting, conversion, and thermal management due to the excellent physical properties of different components. Because of the synergistic interaction between the core and the shell, the thermal radiative properties are expected to be further enhanced. In this work, we achieve near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) enhancement between SiC@Drude CSNPs.

As an analogue to an electrical diode, a radiative thermal diode allows radiation to transfer more efficiently in one direction than in the opposite direction by operating in a contactless mode. In this study, we demonstrated that within the framework of three-body photon thermal tunneling, the rectification performance of a three-body radiative diode can be greatly improved by bringing graphene into the system. The system is composed of three parallel slabs, with the hot and cold terminals of the diode coated with graphene films and the intermediate body made of vanadium dioxide (VO).

We report on the effects of visible light on the low temperature electronic properties of the spin-polarized two dimensional electron system (2DES) formed at the interfaces between LaAlO[Formula: see text], EuTiO[Formula: see text] and (001) SrTiO[Formula: see text]. A strong, persistent modulation of both longitudinal and transverse conductivity was obtained using light emitting diodes (LEDs) with emissions at different wavelengths in the visible spectrum range. In particular, Hall effect data show that visible light induces a non-volatile electron filling of bands with mainly 3d[Formula: see text] character, and at the same time an enhancement of the anomalous Hall effect associated to the magnetic properties of the system.

Disentangling Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) and Multiphoton Excited Photoluminescence (MEPL) signals in microscopy experiments is not an easy task. Two methods have been so far proposed based either on a time domain or a spectral domain analysis of the collected signals. In this report, a new method based on polarization discrimination is proposed to separate these SHG and MEPL contributions.

We explore the impact of three water-soluble polyelectrolytes (PEs) on the flow of concentrated suspensions of poly(-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) microgels with thermoresponsive anionic charge density. By progressively adding the PEs to a jammed suspension of swollen microgels, we show that the rheology of the mixtures is remarkably influenced by the sign of the PE charge, PE concentration and hydrophobicity only when the temperature is increased above the microgel volume phase transition temperature , namely when microgels collapse, they are partially hydrophobic and form a volume-spanning colloidal gel. We find that the original gel is strengthened close to the isoelectric point, attained when microgels are mixed with cationic PEs, while PE hydrophobicity rules the gel strengthening at very high PE concentrations.

We report on transport measurements in monolayer MoSdevices, close to the bottom of the conduction band edge. These devices were annealedbefore electrical measurements. This allows us to obtain good ohmic contacts at low temperatures, and to measure precisely the conductivity and mobility via four-probe measurements.

We optimize and characterize the preparation of 3-trimethoxysilyl propyl methacrylate (TPM) colloidal suspensions for three-dimensional confocal microscopy. We revisit a simple synthesis of TPM microspheres by nucleation of droplets from prehydrolyzed TPM oil in a "zero-flow" regime and demonstrate how precise and reproducible control of particle size may be achieved via single-step nucleation with a focus on how the reagents are mixed. We also revamp the conventional dyeing method for TPM particles to achieve uniform transfer of a fluorophore to the organosilica droplets, improving particle identification.

In this article, we present the mobilities of prolate ellipsoidal micrometric particles close to an air-water interface measured by dual wave reflection interference microscopy. Particle's position and orientation with respect to the interface are simultaneously measured as a function of time. From the measured mean square displacement, five particle mobilities (3 translational and 2 rotational) and two translational-rotational cross-correlations are extracted.

Liquid mixtures composed of colloidal particles and much smaller non-adsorbing linear homopolymers can undergo a gelation transition due to polymer-mediated depletion forces. We now show that the addition of linear polymers to suspensions of soft colloids having the same hydrodynamic size yields a liquid-to-gel-to-re-entrant liquid transition. In particular, the dynamic state diagram of 1,4-polybutadiene star-linear polymer mixtures was determined with the help of linear viscoelastic and small-angle X-ray scattering experiments.

We present a numerical approach for the solution of electromagnetic scattering from a dielectric cylinder partially covered with graphene. It is based on a classical Fourier-Bessel expansion of the fields inside and outside the cylinder to which we apply ad hoc boundary conditions in the presence of graphene. Due to the singular nature of the electric field at the edges of the graphene sheet, we introduce auxiliary boundary conditions.
