Bariatric surgery does not affect kidney stone disease.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Division of General Surgery, Department of Medical-Surgical Sciences and Biotechnologies, Faculty of Pharmacy and Medicine, Bariatric Centre of Excellence SICOB, Referral Training Center of ISHAWS (Italian Chapter EHS), 'La Sapienza' University of Rome-Polo Pontino, Latina, Italy.

Background: numerous epidemiological studies demonstrate the correlation between obesity and urolithiasis. Bariatric surgery is effective in significant weight loss, reducing mortality rates, and lowering the incidence of obesity-related comorbidities. However, it may be associated with long-term complications such as urolithiasis, with an estimated increase of 7.

The use of organic solvents, particularly those of a non-polar nature, is a common practice during cleaning operations in the restoration of polychrome artworks and metallic artifacts. However, these solvents pose significant risks to the health of operators and the environment. This study explores the formulation of innovative gels based on non-polar solvents and cellulose derivatives, proposing a safe and effective method for cleaning metallic artworks.

There is a need to address the evidence gap regarding the in-hospital administration of sacubitril/valsartan in acute myocardial infarction patients. After searching MEDLINE, Google Scholars and Scopus, a random-effects meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials comparing the in-hospital administration of the angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitors (ARNis) versus the standard therapy in patients with reduced heart failure due to myocardial infarction was performed. The primary outcome was major adverse cardiovascular events.

Purpose: The abundance and distribution of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) as well as that of other components of the tumor microenvironment is of particular importance for predicting response to immunotherapy in lung cancer (LC). We describe here a pilot study employing artificial intelligence (AI) in the assessment of TILs and other cell populations, intending to reduce the inter- or intra-observer variability that commonly characterizes this evaluation.

Design: We developed a machine learning-based classifier to detect tumor, immune, and stromal cells on hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections, using the open-source framework .

Purpose: Ocular graft-versus-host disease (oGVHD) affects more than half of the patients following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The disease onset and the pathogenesis of oGVHD are not well understood. We hope to identify the triggers and explore the clinical signs and symptoms of oGVHD development at the early stages.

Antarctic fishes, living in an extreme environment and normally exposed to pathogens, are a promising source of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). These are emerging as next-generation drugs due to their activity against multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria. To infect hosts, beyond intrinsic/acquired resistance, MDR species also use virulence factors such as protease secretion.

Patterns of psychiatric admissions across two major health crises: L' Aquila earthquake and COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

BMC Psychiatry

October 2024

Department of Biotechnological and Applied Clinical Sciences (DISCAB), University of L' Aquila, Via Vetoio, (Coppito 2), L' Aquila, 67100, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed psychiatric hospitalization trends at San Salvatore Hospital during two significant crises: the 2009 earthquake and the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, comparing data from two periods (2008-2011 and 2019-2022).
  • Researchers looked at weekly admissions for various mental health disorders, using statistical models to assess the impact of these events on hospitalization rates.
  • Findings revealed a notable decrease in hospitalizations immediately following the earthquake, with lower rates persisting for several months, while the COVID-19 lockdown initially saw stable admission rates, followed by a substantial long-term increase in hospitalizations in early 2022 across all diagnosed categories.

Objectives: The present research investigated the role of a pervasive and often negative form of indirect contact, exposure to mass media news on interethnic contact. Specifically, we examined the associations between mass media exposure and both African immigrants' attitudes toward native Italians and their collective action intentions to achieve higher intergroup equality in the host country.

Method: We conducted two survey studies, one cross-sectional (Study 1, = 285) and the second longitudinal (Study 2, = 423) with African immigrants living in Italy.
