Objectives: Evidence showed that, even in high-income countries, children and adolescents may not receive high quality of care (QOC). We describe the development and initial validation, in Italy, of two WHO standards-based questionnaires to conduct an assessment of QOC for children and young adolescents at inpatient level, based on the provider and user perspectives.
Design: Multiphase, mixed-methods study.

Adenocarcinoma as the primary cause of bowel intussusception is uncommon. We describe the case of a 86-year-old patient admitted for ileocecal intussusception due to the presence of adenocarcinoma, located in the ileocecal valve and right colon. The etiologies of intussusception, its diagnosis, and conservative or surgical treatments are discussed, with attention placed on the indications for reduction of the invagination prior to surgical resection.

Surgical training is essential to maintain safety standards in healthcare. The aim of this study is to evaluate learning curves and short-term postoperative outcomes of laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) performed by trainees (TRN) and attendings (ATT). The present study included the medical records of patients with acute appendicitis who underwent a fully LA in our department between January 2013 and December 2018.

Purpose: Dedicated post-processing of dual-energy computed tomography angiography (DE-CTA) datasets has been shown to allow for increased vascular contrast. The goal of our study was to define optimal window settings for displaying virtual monoenergetic images (VMI) reconstructed from dual-energy carotid and cerebrovascular DE-CTA.
Methods: Fifty-seven patients who underwent clinically-indicated carotid and cerebrovascular third-generation dual-source DE-CTA were retrospectively evaluated.

Introduction: Isolated heterotopic pancreas (HP) as the primary cause of bowel intussusception is extremely rare. We report a case of a 33-year-old female patient with spina bifida admitted to the Emergency Surgical Department for ileal intussusception due to the presence of heterotopic pancreas associated with endometriosis.
Areas Covered: Symptomatic ileal intussusception for ectopic pancreas is usually associated with overt gastrointestinal blood loss (predominantly melena), abdominal pain, vomiting, and weight loss.

Acute appendicitis is one of the main indications for urgent surgery representing a high-volume procedure worldwide. The current spending review in Italy (and not only in this country) affects the health service and warrants care regarding the use of different surgical devices. The aim of our study is to perform a cost evaluation, comparing the use of endoloops and staplers in complicated acute appendicitis (phlegmonous and gangrenous), taking into consideration the cost of the device in relation to the management of any associated postoperative complications.

Emicizumab has been approved in several countries for regular prophylaxis in patients with congenital haemophilia A and FVIII inhibitors because it substantially reduces their bleeding risk and improves quality of life. However, although significantly less frequent, some breakthrough bleeds may still occur while on emicizumab, requiring treatment with bypassing or other haemostatic agents. Thrombotic complications have been reported with the associated use of activated prothrombin complex concentrates.

Introduction: Even in after curative surgery and adequate linfoadenectomy the survival of advanced gastric cancer (AGC) remains poor. At present some data have been published on the effects of NACT and perioperative chemotherapy on AGC and Esophago-gastric cancer (EGC) but not definitive ones. The present meta-analysis aims to evaluate the effects of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) on the AGC and EGC.

Rationale And Hypothesis: Thrombolytic therapy with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) is an effective and approved therapy for acute ischemic stroke within 4.5 h of onset except for USA, Canada, Croatia, and Moldovia with a current 3 h label. We hypothesized that ischemic stroke patients selected with significant penumbral mismatch on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 4.

The study of the small bowel (SB) has always been challenging both for clinicians and radiologist. It is a long and tortuous tube that can be affected by various pathologies whose signs and symptoms are usually non specific and can mimic other acute abdominal disorders. For these reasons, imaging plays a central role in the diagnosis of the different pathological conditions that can occur.

In more than 20% of all patients, the Crohn's disease presents before the age of 18years. The diagnosis and management of Crohn's disease in children has changed dramatically over the last decade, mainly due to increased awareness, availability of newer diagnostic modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and newer, more powerful treatments such as biologics. Imaging of the small bowel is needed for diagnosis, management, follow-up and also evaluation of the disease in terms of location, extent, activity and complications.

We report here on a patient affected by chronic hepatitis C who developed acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) superinfection with replacement of genotype 1b by genotype 4. The history revealed no risk factors for a new exposure to HCV, with the exception of colonoscopy with mucosal biopsy performed about 3 months before. This report underlines the absence of an effective immune-mediated cross-protection against different HCV genotypes.
