Resveratrol and Cardiovascular Diseases.

Nutrients

May 2016

Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Paris Descartes University, Sorbonne Paris Cité, Paris 75006, France.

The increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) has stimulated research for substances that could improve cardiovascular health. Among them, resveratrol (RES), a polyphenolic compound notably present in grapes and red wine, has been involved in the "French paradox". RES is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and for its ability to upregulate endothelial NO synthase (eNOS).

A simple method for heart stabilization during off-pump multi-vessel coronary artery bypass grafting: surgical technique and short term results.

Eur J Cardiothorac Surg

January 2001

Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, La Pitié Hospital, 47 Boulevard de l'hôpital, 75013, Paris, France.

Minimally invasive cardiac surgery regroups several technical options including small incision, video-assisted surgery and beating heart surgery but mechanical stabilization for off-pump multi-vessel coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), remains a problem. We developed a simple method of stabilization with a fenestrated polytetrafluroethylene patch. Four sutures were passed deeply into the myocardium surrounding the anastomotic site.

Preventing, minimizing, and managing postoperative bleeding.

Ann Thorac Surg

August 1999

Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, La Pitié Hospital, Paris, France.

Background: Most bleeding in cardiovascular surgery is biological, not surgical, the result of disseminated intravascular coagulation in its latter phases. Disseminated intravascular coagulation bleeding affects all levels of the coagulation systems, requiring stabilization of the platelet system, balancing the procoagulant system and its regulation, and stopping the fibrinolytic system's activation.

Methods: The article discusses the multisystem protocol put into place at the Cardiovascular Surgery Department of La Pitié Hospital in Paris to diagnose and treat DIC bleeding so as to slow down causes of its occurrence and prevent further deterioration of the hemostatic systems.

Objective: Elastic arteries were found to be less prone to intimal hyperplasia than muscular arteries. The internal mammary artery (IMA), which is elastic in its proximal segment, presents a gradual decrease of media elastic fibers along its downstream course. Metabolic and morphometric studies of the distal end of the IMA with regard to its local susceptibility to develop intimal changes were undertaken in order to evaluate the reliability of its use as an anastomotic site for bypass grafting.

Physiology of univentricular versus biventricular support.

Ann Thorac Surg

January 1996

Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, La Pitie Hospital, Paris, France.

Right ventricular failure unresponsive to pharmacologic treatment occurs in approximately 20% to 30% of patients supported with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD). The effect of the assistance on right ventricular function is highly controversial. Increased venous return produced by an LVAD can affect right ventricular function by increasing preload.
