In this study, we present a novel electrochemiluminescent DNA biosensor designed for detecting breast cancer type 1 (BRCA1) gene mutations. The biosensor integrates graphene nanosheets (Graph-NS), tetrahedral DNA nanostructures (TDNs), and carbon nanodots (CNDs) to enhance sensitivity and specificity. Graph-NS are employed to structure the transducer and serve as a platform for DNA immobilization.

Human-adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hADMSCs) are multipotent stem cells which have become of great interest in stem-cell therapy due to their less invasive isolation. However, they have limited migration and short lifespans. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms by which these cells could migrate is of critical importance for regenerative medicine.

Background: The cancer cell fusion theory could be one of the best explanations for the metastasis from primary tumours.
Methods: Herein, we co-cultured colorectal cancer (CRC) stem cells with human monocytes and analysed the properties of the generated tumour hybrid cells (THCs). The presence of THCs in the bloodstream together with samples from primary and metastatic lesions and their clinical correlations were evaluated in CRC patients and were detected by both FACS and immunofluorescence methods.

A 66-year-old male patient in follow-up in the urology department for a non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer was detected by ultrasound to have absence of the left kidney and a cystic, multilobed image at the location of the seminal vesicle. Magnetic resonance imaging reveals left renal agenesis and the existence of multiple cysts in the ipsilateral seminal vesicle that reaches a size of 6.9 × 3.

Prenatal alcohol exposure is associated to different physical, behavioral, cognitive, and neurological impairments collectively known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. The underlying mechanisms of ethanol toxicity are not completely understood. Experimental studies during human pregnancy to identify new diagnostic biomarkers are difficult to carry out beyond genetic or epigenetic analyses in biological matrices.

Interleukin 17 (IL-17) is a proinflammatory cytokine that has been the focus of intensive research because of its crucial role in the pathogenesis of different diseases across many medical specialties. In this context, the present review in which a panel of 13 experts in immunology, dermatology, rheumatology, neurology, hematology, infectious diseases, hepatology, cardiology, ophthalmology and oncology have been involved, puts in common the mechanisms through which IL-17 is considered a molecular target for the development of novel biological therapies in these different fields. A comprehensive review of the literature and analysis of the most outstanding evidence have provided the basis for discussing the most relevant data related to IL-17A blocking agents for the treatment of different disorders, such as psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, cardiovascular disorders, non alcoholic fatty liver disease, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, uveitis, hematological and solid cancer.

To determine the efficacy and safety of the Ologen collagen matrix adjunctive to Ahmed valve surgery. A randomized prospective multicentre clinical trial involving 58 patients that were followed for one year. Conventional surgery with Ahmed valve was performed in 31 eyes (Control group/CG) and in 27 Ologen (Ologen group/OG) was placed over the valve's plate.

Aim: To evaluate if the redox system is unbalanced in the hearts of nitrofen-induced congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) animals and to study the possible preventive effects of two anti-oxidant treatments, apocynin and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG).
Methods: Adult rats were divided into four groups. Group 1: rats received only vehicle on day E9.

Background And Aims: To specify the prevalence of patients diagnosed with CF at age of ≥60 year-old and to analyze their characteristics.
Patients And Methods: Observational study of CF patients which were diagnosed at age ≥60 year-old. The analyzed variables were: age, sex, nationality, lung function parameters, conditions present at diagnosis, microbiological characteristics and genetic findings.

Purpose: The role of F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography (F-FDG PET/CT) in the diagnosis of metastatic infectious foci in children with catheter-related blood stream infection has been hardly studied, although some authors have reported it benefit in the screening of metastatic foci in adult population. Septic pulmonary emboli are among the most difficult to identify, because many cases do not present pulmonary complaints or abnormal chest radiography. However, diagnosis of these foci has important therapeutic consequences.

Purpose: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is one of the causes of respiratory failure in newborns due to lung hypoplasia and pulmonary abnormalities leading to pulmonary hypertension (PH). NAD(P)H oxidase (Nox) is a family of isoenzymes that generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) which can contribute to PH-induced vascular dysfunction. On the other hand, superoxide dismutase (SOD) 1-2 and catalase are the antioxidant enzymes that eliminate the excess of ROS in pulmonary vascular cells.

Anticoagulation therapy is the standard treatment of patients with symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Until recently, treatment of VTE was based on parenteral or low-molecular-weight heparin for initial therapy (5-10 days) and oral vitamin K antagonists for long-term therapy. Those treatments have some limitations, including parenteral administration (heparins), the need for frequent monitoring and dose adjustments, interactions with several medications, and dietary restrictions (vitamin K antagonists).

Objective: To evaluate (18)F-fluorocholine positron-emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) in restaging patients with a history of prostate adenocarcinoma who have biochemical relapse after early radical treatment, and to correlate the technique's disease detection rate with a set of variables and clinical and pathological parameters.
Patients And Methods: This was a retrospective multicentre study that included 374 patients referred for choline-PET/CT who had biochemical relapse. In all, 233 patients who met the following inclusion criteria were analysed: diagnosis of prostate cancer; early radical treatment; biochemical relapse; main clinical and pathological variables; and clinical, pathological and imaging data needed to validate the results.

Background: Oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy (CT), widely used as adjuvant therapy for stage III and selected high-risk stage II colon cancer (CC) patients, is often associated with cumulative peripheral neuropathy. Our aim is to identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes involved in oxaliplatin metabolism, DNA repair mechanisms, cell cycle control, detoxification or excretion pathways to predict severe (grade 2-3) oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy (OXPN) among CC patients treated with oxaliplatin and fluoropyrimidine-based adjuvant CT.
Patients And Methods: Genomic DNA was extracted from formalin-fixed-paraffin-embedded peritumoral samples from 206 high-risk stage II and stage III CC patients receiving oxaliplatin-based adjuvant CT from January 2004 to December 2009.

The advent of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-targeted monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), cetuximab and panitumumab has expanded the range of treatment options for metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC). Despite these agents have paved the way to individualized therapy, our understanding why some patients respond to treatment whereas others do not remain poor. The realization that detection of positive EGFR expression by IHC does not reliably predict clinical outcome of EGFR-targeted treatment has led to an intense search for alternative predictive biomarkers.

Congenital syphilis (CS) is a preventable disease. Nevertheless, since the year 2000, there has been an upward trend in incidence in Spain, similar to what has occurred in other European countries. We present a case of early congenital syphilis showing the classical features of the disease, in which skin lesions gave the clue that led to the diagnosis.
