Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to analyze changes in metabolites, lipids, and proteins in children with perinatally acquired HIV-1 during a transient viral rebound (tVR) using advanced multi-omic techniques on plasma samples taken before and after the viral rebound event.
  • - Results indicated that while the CD4/CD8 ratio decreased slightly during tVR, significant changes were observed in specific proteins, metabolites, and lipids when comparing post-tVR samples to those of children with consistent viral control.
  • - The findings suggest that tVR and subsequent suppression alter certain biochemical markers in the bloodstream, which are associated with immune functions, highlighting the complex relationship between viral activity and metabolic changes.

First case report of multivisceral transplant from a deceased cardiac death donor.

April 2023

Pediatric Surgery Department, La Paz University Hospital, Madrid, Spain; La Paz Research Institute (Idipaz), La Paz University Hospital, Madrid, Spain; European Reference Network on Transplantation in Children (TransplantChild ERN), Madrid, Spain.

The current shortage of pediatric multivisceral donors accounts for the long time and mortality on the waiting list of pediatric patients. The use of donors after cardiac death, especially after the outbreak of normothermic regional perfusion, has increased in recent years for all solid organs except the intestine, mainly because of its higher susceptibility to ischemia-reperfusion injury. We present the first literature case of multivisceral donors after cardiac death transplantation in a 13-month-old recipient from a 2.

Background: In recent decades, the increase in population movements has turned the focus to imported diseases. The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the access to health care systems, especially in highly vulnerable populations. We address the effects of the pandemic on the health screening of migrant unaccompanied minors (UM) in Spain.

Introduction: The use of tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) has been associated with increased cholesterol and body weight. Real-life data on the metabolic effects of switching from a TAF-based triple regimen to a dolutegravir (DTG)-based two-drug regimen (2-DR) are scarce.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study of patients who have switched from a triple TAF-based regimen to a 2-DR [DTG-lamivudine (DTG-3TC) or DTG- rilpivirine (DTG-RPV]) with at least 6 months of follow-up.

Calcium (Ca) is a universal second messenger that plays a key role in cellular signaling. However, Ca signals are transduced with the help of Ca-binding proteins, which serve as sensors, transducers, and elicitors. Among the collection of these Ca-binding proteins, calmodulin (CaM) emerged as the prototypical model in eukaryotic cells.

The Ca-sensor protein calmodulin (CaM) is a major regulator of multiple cell functions. A unique and puzzling feature of human, and all so far investigated mammals, is the presence of three distinct CaM genes on different chromosomes, which code for identical proteins. How this case of apparent genetic redundancy evolved and why it could be to the advantage of the mammalian organisms is not well established.

Pregnancy Outcomes Among Perinatally HIV-Infected Women in Spain.

J Acquir Immune Defic Syndr

December 2022

Servicio de Pediatría, Enfermedades Infecciosas y Tropicales, Hospital Universitario La Paz y La Paz Research Institute (IdiPAZ), Hospital Universitario La Paz, Madrid, Spain.

Background: An increasing number of women living with perinatally acquired HIV are reaching adulthood and becoming pregnant. Achieving viral suppression is challenging in this population frequently exposed to numerous antiretroviral regimens. This study describes the long-term outcomes of pregnant women living with perinatally acquired HIV in Spain.

Pets have many health, emotional and social benefits for children, but the risk of zoonotic infections cannot be underestimated, especially for immunosuppressed patients. We report the recommendations given by health professionals working with pediatric transplant recipients to their families regarding pet ownership. An online survey addressing zoonosis knowledge and recommendations provided by health care practitioners regarding pets was distributed to clinicians treating pediatric transplant recipients.

To characterize the evolution of healthcare workers' mental health status over the 1-year period following the initial COVID-19 pandemic outbreak and to examine baseline characteristics associated with resolution or persistence of mental health problems over time. We conducted an 8-month follow-up cohort study. Eligible participants were healthcare workers working in Spain.

Multicenter study designed to describe epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) positive cases registered among children and adolescents living with HIV (CALWH). SARS-CoV-2 infection was confirmed in 13.3% of CALWH, with all patients presenting mild symptoms, and the outcome was good in all patients.

Background: While increased CD8 counts and low CD4/CD8 ratio during treated HIV correlate with immunosenescence, their additional predictive values to identify individuals with HIV at higher risk of clinical events remain controversial.

Methods: We selected treatment-naive individuals initiating ART from ACTG studies 384, 388, A5095, A5142, A5202, and A5257 who had achieved viral suppression at year 2. We examined the effect of CD8+ T cell counts and CD4/CD8 at year 2 on the probability of AIDS and serious non-AIDS events in years 3-7.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a severe clinical condition characterized by an increase in mean pulmonary artery pressure, which leads to a right ventricular hypertrophy and potentially heart failure and death. In the last several years, many genes have been associated with PAH, particularly in idiopathic and heritable forms but also in associated forms. Here we described the identification of two unrelated families in which the variant was found from a cohort of 300 patients.

Paediatric Infectious and Tropical Diseases Department, Hospital La Paz Research Institute (IdiPAZ), CIBER Infectious Diseases (ISCIII), La Paz University Hospital, Paseo de la Castellana, 261, 28046, Madrid, Spain.

To assess drug-resistant bacterial colonisation rates and associated risk factors in children with complex chronic conditions admitted to a national reference unit in Spain. Cross-sectional study that included all children admitted to our unit from September 2018 to July 2019. Rectal swabs were obtained to determine multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli (MR-GNB) colonisation, and nasal swab to determine S.

SARS-CoV-2 infections in children are frequently asymptomatic or mild and can go unnoticed. This study aimed to describe the seroprevalence and clinical course of SARS-CoV-2 in a cohort of children with rheumatic diseases in a real-life setting and assess possible risk factors. A cross-sectional study was performed in a paediatric rheumatology unit (September 2020 to February 2021).

Article Synopsis
  • Identifying effective biomarkers for early-stage rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remains difficult, highlighting the need for novel markers in diagnosis and treatment adjustment.
  • This study investigates the diagnostic potential of autoantibodies (Anti-CD26 aAbs) in 106 treatment-naïve early arthritis patients, revealing different isotype patterns linked to RA and undifferentiated arthritis.
  • Findings suggest that Anti-CD26 aAbs may serve as important biomarkers and possible contributors to the disease in both seropositive and seronegative patients, even with weak correlations to traditional disease activity indicators.

Emerging studies have suggested several chromosomal regions as potential host genetic factors involved in the susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection and disease outcome. We nested a COVID-19 genome-wide association study using the GR@ACE/DEGESCO study, searching for susceptibility factors associated with COVID-19 disease. To this end, we compared 221 COVID-19 confirmed cases with 17,035 individuals in whom the COVID-19 disease status was unknown.
