The lead halide perovskite (LHP) nanocrystals (NCs) research area is flourishing due to their exceptional properties and great potential for a wide range of applications in optoelectronics and photovoltaics. Yet, despite the momentum in the field, perovskite devices are not yet ready for commercialization due to degradation caused by intrinsic phase transitions and external factors such as moisture, temperature, and ultraviolet (UV) light. To attain long-term stability, we analyze the origin of instabilities and describe different strategies such as surface modification, encapsulation, and doping for long-term viability.

Key Laboratory of Eco-Chemical Engineering, Ministry of Education, College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, Qingdao University of Science & Technology, 266042 Qingdao, China.

Graphitic carbon nitrides (-CN) as low-cost, chemically stable, and ecofriendly layered semiconductors have attracted rapidly growing interest in optoelectronics and photocatalysis. However, the nature of photoexcited carriers in -CN is still controversial, and an independent charge-carrier picture based on the band theory is commonly adopted. Here, by performing transient spectroscopy studies, we show characteristics of self-trapped excitons (STEs) in -CN nanosheets including broad trapped exciton-induced absorption, picosecond exciton trapping without saturation at high photoexcitation density, and transient STE-induced stimulated emissions.

Colloidal quantum wells (CQWs), also known as nanoplatelets (NPLs), are exciting material systems for numerous photonic applications, including lasers and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Although many successful type-I NPL-LEDs with high device performance have been demonstrated, type-II NPLs are not fully exploited for LED applications, even with alloyed type-II NPLs with enhanced optical properties. Here, we present the development of CdSe/CdTe/CdSe core/crown/crown (multi-crowned) type-II NPLs and systematic investigation of their optical properties, including their comparison with the traditional core/crown counterparts.

We measure the ultrafast spectral diffusion, vibronic dynamics, and energy relaxation of a CdSe colloidal quantum wells (CQWs) system at room temperature using two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES). The energy relaxation of light-hole (LH) excitons and hot carriers to heavy-hole (HH) excitons is resolved with a time scale of ∼210 fs. We observe the equilibration dynamics between the spectroscopically accessible HH excitonic state and a dark state with a time scale of ∼160 fs.

The photo-bolometric effect is critically important in optoelectronic structures and devices employing metallic electrodes with nanoscale features due to heating caused by the plasmonic field enhancement. One peculiar case is individual silver nanowires (Ag NWs) and their networks. Ag NW-networks exhibit excellent thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties, providing a simple yet reliable alternative to common flexible transparent electrode materials used in optoelectronic devices.

Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Department of Physics, UNAM - Institute of Materials Science and Nanotechnology, Bilkent University, Ankara, 06800, Turkey.

Silicon is the most prevalent material system for light-harvesting applications; however, its inherent indirect bandgap and consequent weak absorption limits its potential in optoelectronics. This paper proposes to address this limitation by combining the sensitization of silicon with extraordinarily large absorption cross sections of quasi-2D colloidal quantum well nanoplatelets (NPLs) and to demonstrate excitation transfer from these NPLs to bulk silicon. Here, the distance dependency, d, of the resulting Förster resonant energy transfer from the NPL monolayer into a silicon substrate is systematically studied by tuning the thickness of a spacer layer (of Al O ) in between them (varied from 1 to 50 nm in thickness).

College of Materials Science and Engineering, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Special Functional Materials, Shenzhen 518060, China.

High-performance solar-blind UV detector with high response and fast speed is needed in multiple types of areas, which is hard to achieve in one device with a simple structure and device fabrication process. Here, the effects of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) with different sizes on UV response characteristics of the device are studied, the Ag NPs with different sizes that are made from a simple vacuum anneal method. Ag NPs with different sizes could modulate the peak response position of the mixed-phase MgZnO detector from near UV range (350 nm) to deep UV range (235 nm), and the enhancement effect of the Ag NPs on the UV response differs much with the crystal structure and the basic UV response of the MgZnO thin film.

November 2020

Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Department of Physics, UNAM - Institute of Materials Science and Nanotechnology, Bilkent University, Ankara, 06800, Turkey.

This study demonstrates an ultra-thin colloidal gain medium consisting of bi-layers of colloidal quantum wells (CQWs) with a total film thickness of 14 nm integrated with high-index dielectrics. To achieve optical gain from such an ultra-thin nanocrystal film, hybrid waveguide structures partly composed of self-assembled layers of CQWs and partly high-index dielectric material are developed and shown: in asymmetric waveguide architecture employing one thin film of dielectric underneath CQWs and in the case of quasi-symmetric waveguide with a pair of dielectric films sandwiching CQWs. Numerical modeling indicates that the modal confinement factor of ultra-thin CQW films is enhanced in the presence of the adjacent dielectric layers significantly.

Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Department of Physics, UNAM - Institute of Materials Science and Nanotechnology, Bilkent University, Ankara 06800, Turkey.

We propose and demonstrate construction of highly uniform, multilayered superstructures of CdSe/CdZnS core/shell colloidal nanoplatelets (NPLs) using liquid interface self-assembly. These NPLs are sequentially deposited onto a solid substrate into slabs having monolayer-precise thickness across tens of cm areas. Because of near-unity surface coverage and excellent uniformity, amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) is observed from an uncharacteristically thin film having 6 NPL layers, corresponding to a mere 42 nm thickness.

Colloidal semiconductor quantum wells have emerged as a promising material platform for use in solution-processable lasers. However, applications relying on their optical gain suffer from nonradiative Auger decay due to multi-excitonic nature of light amplification in II-VI semiconductor nanocrystals. Here, we show sub-single exciton level of optical gain threshold in specially engineered CdSe/CdS@CdZnS core/crown@gradient-alloyed shell quantum wells.

Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are highly promising materials for light amplification thanks to their efficient photoluminescence, tunable emission wavelength and low-cost synthesis. Unfortunately, CQDs are suffering from band-edge state degeneracy which demands multiple excitons to achieve population inversion. As a result, non-radiative Auger recombination increases the lasing threshold and limits the gain lifetime.

LUMINOUS! Centre of Excellence for Semiconductor Lighting and Displays, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The Photonics Institute (TPI), Nanyang Technological University, 50 Nanyang Avenue, 639798 Singapore.

Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) is a fundamental process that is key to optical biosensing, photosynthetic light harvesting, and down-converted light emission. However, in total, conventional FRET in a donor-acceptor pair is essentially unidirectional, which impedes practical application of FRET-based technologies. Here, we propose a mutual FRET scheme that is uniquely bidirectional in a binary colloidal quantum well (CQW) complex enabled by utilizing the d orbital electrons in a dopant-host CQW system.

December 2018

LUMINOUS! Centre of Excellence for Semiconductor Lighting and Displays, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore 639798.

Colloidal semiconductor nanoplatelets (NPLs) are highly promising luminescent materials owing to their exceptionally narrow emission spectra. While high-efficiency NPLs in non-polar organic media can be obtained readily, NPLs in aqueous media suffer from extremely low quantum yields (QYs), which completely undermines their potential, especially in biological applications. Here, we show high-efficiency water-soluble CdSe/CdS@Cd1-xZnxS core/crown@shell NPLs formed by layer-by-layer grown and composition-tuned gradient Cd1-xZnxS shells on CdSe/CdS core/crown seeds.

Recently, CsPbBr perovskites have been emerging as very promising green emission materials for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) due to their high color purity, low cost and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). However, the corresponding LED performance is still low and far behind CHNHPbBr; it is due to the lack of proper perovskite film preparation methods and interfacial engineering. Herein, we report highly bright and durable CsPbBr-based LEDs fabricated using a one-step solution method.
