Depressive symptoms and their correlates among predoctoral dental students in the United States.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of self-reported depressive symptoms among predoctoral dental students in the United States and examine potential correlates.

Methods: A survey was emailed to all 66 dental schools in the United States, inviting them to distribute it to their predoctoral students. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9.

Nano-topographical surface engineering for enhancing bioactivity of PEEK implants (in vitro-histomorphometric study).

Objectives: Dental implants are currently becoming a routine treatment decision in dentistry. Synthetic polyetheretherketone (PEEK) polymer is a prevalent component of dental implantology field. The current study aimed to assess the influence of Nd:YAG laser nano-topographical surface engineering combined with ultraviolet light or platelet rich fibrin on the bioactivity and osseointegration of PEEK implants in laboratory and animal testing model.

An overview of current evaluation methods of postgraduate dental specialty residents.

Purpose: A lack of contemporary dental literature exists on evaluating dental residents in postgraduate education, with no standardized criteria or information on technology adoption. This study aims to understand current evaluation methods in dental residency programs and compare them to existing literature.

Methods: A survey with 22 questions was sent to program directors of 749 ADA/CODA (American Dental Association/Commission on Dental Accreditation)-accredited postgraduate dental residencies.

Use of Tuberosity Tissue Block for Tunneling Reconstruction of Class III Sockets With Simultaneous Implant Placement: A Case Report.

Immediate implant placement in the anterior maxilla remains a complex procedure, particularly when the cortical bone plate of the socket is not intact and a gingival recession is present. The reconstruction of both hard and soft tissues increases the complexity of these clinical scenarios. This case report describes a novel, minimally invasive technique to reconstruct class III sockets with simultaneous implant placement.

Quantifying the degree of white spot lesions on enamel caused by different commercial beverages using the Canary Caries Detection System: An in vitro study.

The use of sports and energy drinks has drastically increased in the adolescent population. This population often is in orthodontic treatment, and the use of such drinks with poor oral hygiene promotes the development of white spot lesions (WSLs). Quantifying the degree of the lesion has been limited in the past.

One-year implant survival following lateral window sinus augmentation using plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF): a retrospective study.

Background: The aim of this study was to assess one-year implant survival after lateral window sinus augmentation using PRGF combined with various bone grafting materials.

Material And Methods: This was a retrospective chart review and radiographic analysis of patients that had undergone lateral window sinus augmentation with PRGF and had dental implants placed at least 6 months post augmentation. All implants included were followed up for at least one year after placement.

Management of facial cellulitis of odontogenic origin in a paediatric hospital.

Background: Facial cellulitis of odontogenic origin (FCOO) can lead to systemic complications in children. Research on factors leading to improvement of outcomes is limited.

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate patient characteristics, treatment modalities (antibiotics and route of administration), length of stay in the hospital, time till definitive treatment, and factors related to early treatment of FCOO.

Use of Vascularized Myo-Osseous Fibula Free Flap to Reconstruct a Hemimandibular Defect With a Concomitant Skull Defect Arising From Stock Condylar Prosthesis Displacement Into the Middle Cranial Fossa.

Functional reconstruction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a controversial topic among oral and maxillofacial surgeons; this controversy becomes more complicated when one dives into the dilemma of the ideal reconstructive modality. TMJ defects might result from various etiologies, such as blunt or penetrating traumatic injuries, advanced degenerative joint disease, or various pathologic conditions, including benign and malignant conditions, that might arise from the TMJ or adjacent tissues. Reconstruction of the TMJ is vital because of its essential function in mastication, articulation, speech, and facial esthetics and symmetry.

Effect of phytic acid on the setting times and tensile strengths of calcium silicate-based cements.

This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effect of 1% phytic acid as a mixing medium on the setting times and diametral tensile strengths of different calcium silicate-based cements. Specimens for four experimental groups (n = 20/each) were fabricated by mixing ProRoot MTA (Dentsply) and Biodentine (Septodont) powders with their original liquids or with 1% phytic acid. Half of the samples in each group were immediately subjected to setting time tests, whereas the remaining half was subjected to the diametral tensile strength test after 3 weeks.

Phosphate Acquisition and Virulence in Human Fungal Pathogens.

The ability of pathogenic fungi to acquire essential macro and micronutrients during infection is a well-established virulence trait. Recent studies in the major human fungal pathogens and have revealed that acquisition of the essential macronutrient, phosphate, is essential for virulence. The phosphate sensing and acquisition pathway in fungi, known as the PHO pathway, has been extensively characterized in the model yeast .

Hydrolytic and Color Stability of Resin Infiltration: A Preliminary in vitro Trial.

Aims: Resin infiltration is an emerging technique for management of noncavitated lesions. This study evaluated the in vitro hydrolytic and color stability of the ICON® resin infiltration system (IC) in 42 extracted human teeth.

Materials And Methods: ICON® resin infiltration system was compared with dental adhesive (DA) and dental sealant (DS).

Enamel surface roughness of preferred debonding and polishing protocols.

Objective: This study investigated the surface roughness of enamel after debonding and instrumentation with commonly used methods.

Methods: Part I: a survey was sent to active members of the American Association of Orthodontists to determine popular bonding, debonding, and polishing protocols. Part II: brackets were bonded to the buccal surface of 30 extracted human premolar teeth.

Epidemiology and outcomes of dental trauma cases from an urban pediatric emergency department.

Aim: The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine the outcomes of traumatized teeth treated in a pediatric emergency department.

Methods And Materials: The records of pediatric patients presenting to the pediatric emergency department of a pediatric hospital over a 56-month period were reviewed and pertinent data were extracted. Treatment outcomes and contributing factors were analyzed for cases with greater than 6 months of follow up.

Post-sedation events in children sedated for dental care.

Moderate oral sedation is used in pediatric dentistry for safe delivery of dental care to children. However, there is a paucity of data on the effects of pediatric dental sedations after discharge of children from the dental office. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the incidence of adverse events occurring with meperidine and hydroxyzine versus midazolam alone 8 and 24 hours after sedation in pediatric dental patients.

Management of avulsed permanent incisors with closed apices and prolonged extraoral dry time.

This article reports the clinical management and outcome of two avulsed permanent incisors that were kept dry for 42 hours. Dental trauma guidelines were followed and clinically successful outcomes were seen until seven months of follow-up. The factors contributing to successful management of this case despite the extreme clinical circumstances were attributed to pulp extirpation prior to replantation, doxycycline soak, fluoride soak, and timely endodontic treatment.

Evaluation of short-term fluoride release from fluoride varnishes.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the rate of fluoride release from fluoride varnishes over a 48-hour period and ascertain the time at which a plateau occurred. This data provides clinically relevant time points to resume tooth brushing after fluoride varnish application.

Study Design: Four commercially available fluoride varnishes, Premier Enamel ProVarnish (EP), Colgate PreviDent (CP), Omni Vanish (OV) and Omni VanishXT (OVXT) were applied on 40 extracted permanent human teeth.

Vacuolar trafficking and Candida albicans pathogenesis.

The vacuole is likely to play a variety of roles in supporting host colonization and infection by pathogenic species of fungi. In the human pathogen Candida albicans, the vacuole undergoes dynamic morphological shifts during the production of the tissue invasive hyphal form, and this organelle is required for virulence. Recent efforts in my lab have focused on defining which vacuolar trafficking pathways are required for C.

Management of osteonecrosis of the jaws in patients with history of bisphosphonates therapy.

Bisphosphonates are compounds used in the treatment of various metabolic and malignant bone diseases. The relation between the use of bisphosphonates and ostenonecrosis of the jaws as an adverse effect of the drug has been intensely discussed during the last few years, and up to this moment, there is no consensus concerning an ideal treatment modality for this condition. Nevertheless, there is an agreement among researchers that the standard goal for controlling jaw osteonecrosis is to prevent it.

Spontaneous regression of congenital epulis: a case report and review of the literature.

Introduction: Congenital epulis is a rare lesion found on the alveolar process of a newborn child, diagnosed soon after birth. The lesion has a site predilection for the anterior maxillary alveolar process and a 9:1 sex predilection for females. Once diagnosed the traditional management of the lesion has been surgical excision under general anesthesia.

Peripheral odontogenic fibroma: a clinicopathologic study of 151 cases and review of the literature with special emphasis on recurrence.

Objective: The peripheral odontogenic fibroma (POdF) is a rare benign neoplasm of odontogenic origin with limited data on recurrence. The purpose of this study was to define the clinical and histopathologic spectrum of POdF and to investigate its recurrence rate and variables associated with its recurrence.

Study Design: A total of 151 cases of POdF were accepted for this study, which documented clinical, histopathologic, and follow-up data.

Autophagy in Candida albicans.

Candida albicans is considered a commensal organism of humans, colonizing the oral cavity, gastrointestinal, and reproductive tracts. However, when host defenses are compromised C. albicans can transform into a tissue invasive pathogen.

Changing an organization's culture: Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Dentistry's TigerCare program.

Studies have shown that the culture of an organization could be the difference between success and failure in achieving its overall corporate goals and mission. Although some aspects of an organization's culture are visible and tangible, such as the physical structure or overall cleanliness of the facility, other aspects are less tangible but just as apparent, like the helpfulness of the staff and the overall "attitude" of the organization. Private industry discovered many years ago that the key to creating a friendly and productive culture lies in the hands of the employees.
