A functional vascular access (VA) is of paramount importance to patients on hemodialysis therapy. While arteriovenous fistula (AVF) remains the preferred VA, their long-term patency is unpredictable. A dysfunctional VA contributes to a high morbidity rate, an increased susceptibility to major adverse cardiovascular events, recurrent hospitalization, and a poor quality of life.

Purpose: A systematic review was conducted to investigate differences in incidence and primary origin of synchronous brain metastasis (sBM) in varying racial groups with different primary cancers.

Methods: Adhering to PRISMA 2020 guidelines a search was conducted using PubMed and Ovid databases for publications from January 2000 to January 2023, with search terms including combinations of "brain metastasis," "race," "ethnicity," and "incidence." Three independent reviewers screened for inclusion criteria encompassing studies clearly reporting primary cancer sites, patient demographics including race, and synchronous BM (sBM) incidence.

Current advances in pain regimens for percutaneous nephrolithotomy A comprehensive review.

Can Urol Assoc J

Successfully treated acute adult T-cell leukemia with haploidentical stem cell transplantation.

Proc (Bayl Univ Med Cent)

April 2022

Department of Hematology and Oncology, LSU Health Shreveport, Shreveport, Louisiana.

Adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma caused by human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 is a rare and aggressive tumor with high morbidity and mortality. Historically it has been treated with chemotherapy, but more recent studies suggest improvement in survival with the combination of chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation. Our case study reports a middle-aged African American woman with no other risk factors diagnosed with the acute form of adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma and in remission after completing chemotherapy and a haploidentical stem cell transplantation.

Introduction And Hypothesis: Although pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) is an option for female mixed incontinence (MUI), the role of PFMT prior to midurethral sling (MUS) surgery is not well defined. We hypothesize that preoperative PFMT (pretraining) positively impacts urinary storage and voiding symptoms prior to retropubic MUS.

Methods: We carried out an institutional review board-approved, retrospective chart review of women with stress-predominant MUI undergoing a retropubic MUS.

There is significant disagreement about maintenance or ligation of arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) in kidney transplant patients (KTPs). Potential harms from maintaining AVFs are their impact on cardiac function, cosmetic concerns and complications such as bleeding and rupture. High flow AVFs can place a strain on the heart and cause or exacerbate pre-existing cardiac dysfunction.
