Central nervous system (CNS) metastases can be seen at a rate of 30% in advanced stages for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Growing evidence indicates the predictive roles of driver gene mutations in the development of brain metastases (BM) in recent years, meaning that oncogene-driven NSCLC have a high incidence of BM at diagnosis. Today, 3rd generation targeted drugs with high intracranial efficacy, which can cross the blood-brain barrier, have made a positive contribution to survival for these patients with an increased propensity to BM.

In vivo and in vitro effects of cord blood hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) expansion using valproic acid and/or nicotinamide.

Curr Res Transl Med

September 2024

Ankara University Faculty of Medicine Department of Hematology, Ankara, Turkey; Istinye University, Ankara Liv Hospital, Hematology and Stem Cell Transplantation Unit Ankara, Turkey. Electronic address:

Background: High self-renewal capacity and most permissive nature of umbilical cord blood (CB) results with successful transplant outcomes but low hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) counts limits wider use. In order to overcome this problem ex vivo expansion with small molecules such as Valproic acid (VPA) or Nicotinamide (NAM) have been shown to be effective. To the best of our knowledge, the combinatory effects of VPA and NAM on HSPC expansion has not been studied earlier.

Introduction: Male breast cancer, comprising approximately 1% of all breast cancer cases, often leads to the exclusion of male patients as a criterion in clinical trials. While the efficacy of Cyclin-dependent kinases 4 and 6 (CDK 4/6) inhibitors has been established in metastatic hormone receptor-positive (HR +) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HER2 -) breast cancer in women, limited data exist on their effectiveness in male patients. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of palbociclib or ribociclib in male patients with breast cancer.

Bioengineered Ionic Liquid for Catheter-Directed Tissue Ablation, Drug Delivery, and Embolization.

Adv Mater

June 2024

The Laboratory for Patient-Inspired Engineering, Mayo Clinic, 13400 East Shea Blvd., Scottsdale, AZ, 85259, USA.

Delivery of therapeutics to solid tumors with high bioavailability remains a challenge and is likely the main contributor to the ineffectiveness of immunotherapy and chemotherapy. Here, a catheter-directed ionic liquid embolic (ILE) is bioengineered to achieve durable vascular embolization, uniform tissue ablation, and drug delivery in non-survival and survival porcine models of embolization, outperforming the clinically used embolic agents. To simulate the clinical scenario, rabbit VX2 orthotopic liver tumors are treated showing successful trans-arterial delivery of Nivolumab and effective tumor ablation.

Bortezomib (Vel)- Melphalan 200 mg/m2 (Mel200) (Vel-Mel) has been utilised to intensify conditioning in autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHCT) for multiple myeloma (MM). This EBMT registry-based study compared Vel-Mel with Mel200 during upfront AHCT. Between 2010 and 2017, MM patients who received Vel-Mel (n = 292) conditioning were compared with 4,096 Mel200 patients in the same 58 centres.

Background: Peripheral nerve injury can result in significant clinical complications that have uncertain prognoses. Currently, there is a lack of effective pharmacological interventions for nerve damage, despite the existence of several small compounds, peptides, hormones, and growth factors that have been suggested as potential enhancers of neuron regeneration. Despite the objective of achieving full functional restoration by surgical intervention, the persistent challenge of inadequate functional recovery remains a significant concern in the context of peripheral nerve injuries.

Advances and Challenges in Interventional Immuno-Oncology Locoregional Therapies.

J Vasc Interv Radiol

February 2024

Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, Laboratory for Patient Inspired Engineering, Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale, Arizona. Electronic address:

Interventional immuno-oncology is making strides in locoregional therapies to address complex tumor microenvironments. Long-standing interventional radiology cancer therapies, such as tumor ablation and embolization, are being recharacterized in the context of immunotherapy. Intratumoral injections, such as those of genetically engineered or unaltered viruses, and the delivery of immune cells, antibodies, proteins, or cytokines into targeted tumors, along with advancements in delivery techniques, have produced promising results in preliminary studies, indicating their antitumor effectiveness.

  • The Syrian civil war has led to a significant increase in the population of Arab refugees in Turkey, prompting a study to analyze cystic fibrosis (CF) among this group, particularly focusing on demographic, clinical, and genetic data from 87 Arab refugee patients (92% Syrian) diagnosed with CF in Turkey between 2011 and 2021.
  • The study found that the median age at diagnosis was 22.33 months, with newborn screening identifying cases much earlier (median 4.2 months). Notably, parental consanguinity was observed in about 60% of the patients, indicating a potential genetic link.
  • The most common CF mutation identified was F508del, found in

Occipital Sinus-Sparing Linear Paramedian Dural Incision: A Technical Note and Case Series for Median Suboccipital Approach.

World Neurosurg

April 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Liv Hospital Vad istanbul, Istanbul, Turkey; Faculty of Medicine, Department of Neurosurgery, Istinye University, Istanbul, Turkey. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • - The study introduces an OS-sparing linear paramedian dural incision technique that avoids sacrificing the occipital sinus, resulting in fewer complications during midline suboccipital surgeries.
  • - This technique was applied to five cases, successfully preserving the occipital sinus, achieving watertight closure, and completely resecting tumors and cavernomas without any cerebrospinal fluid leaks or wound complications.
  • - The findings suggest that this approach reduces risks associated with traditional durotomies, such as bleeding and infections, but further validation with a larger patient group is necessary.

Precise manipulation of flexible surgical tools is crucial in minimally invasive surgical procedures, necessitating a miniature and flexible robotic probe that can precisely direct the surgical instruments. In this work, we developed a polymer-based robotic fiber with a thermal actuation mechanism by local heating along the sides of a single fiber. The fiber robot was fabricated by highly scalable fiber drawing technology using common low-cost materials.
