Lupus

December 2018

1 Autoimmune Diseases Research Unit, Department of Internal Medicine, BioCruces Bizkaia Health Research Institute, Hospital Universitario Cruces, University of the Basque Country, Barakaldo, Spain.

Objectives: Using data of patients from the inception cohort Registro Español de Lupus Eritematoso Sistémico (RELES), we aimed to analyse the incidence of severe infection in the first two years of follow-up and how predictors of infection change during the course of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Material And Methods: The study included 282 patients. Markers of lupus activity, prednisone doses and immunosuppressive therapy were compared between patients with and without infections in the first and second year of the disease.

Endothelial cell rearrangements during vascular patterning require PI3-kinase-mediated inhibition of actomyosin contractility.

Nat Commun

November 2018

Vascular Signalling Laboratory, ProCURE, Oncobell Program, Institut d´Investigació Biomèdica de Bellvitge (IDIBELL), Gran Via de l'Hospitalet 199, 08908, L´Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • Angiogenesis is the process where blood vessels form and change shape using special cells called endothelial cells, but we don't fully understand how it works.
  • Researchers found that a protein called PI3Kα helps these cells rearrange properly during vessel development by controlling other proteins that affect cell movement.
  • When PI3Kα activity is decreased, it messes up how these cells connect with each other, leading to problems that can cause the blood vessels to not form correctly.

Ischiocrural Strength May Be a Better Prognostic Marker Than Quadriceps Strength in COPD.

Lung

December 2018

Pneumology Department, Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron, Ciber de Enfermedades Respiratorias (CIBERES), P. Vall d'Hebron 119-129, 08035, Barcelona, Spain.

It is well known that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients present with muscle dysfunction that may not correlate with the degree of severity of airflow obstruction. Historically, the strength deficit of the knee extensor musculature (quadriceps) has been described as an independent factor of mortality in COPD. We present the results of a retrospective study with longitudinal follow-up of 60 patients with severe COPD followed for 7 years.

Revisiting the liver: from development to regeneration - what we ought to know!

Int J Dev Biol

April 2019

TGF-β and Cancer Group, Oncobell Program, Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL), L´Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain.

The liver is structurally and functionally heterogeneous and complex, and it accomplishes crucial functions for the organism. Its most remarkable potential is its capacity to regenerate after injury in order to maintain whole body homeostasis and guarantee the survival of the individual. Under normal conditions, liver regeneration (LR) is attributed to adult hepatocytes, the main cells in the liver which are able to proliferate in response to different stimuli or injuries.

SIRT1 activation with neuroheal is neuroprotective but SIRT2 inhibition with AK7 is detrimental for disconnected motoneurons.

Cell Death Dis

May 2018

Institut de Neurociències (INc) and Department of Cell Biology, Physiology and Immunology, Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red sobre Enfermedades Neurodegenerativas (CIBERNED), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), Barcelona, Spain.

Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) activity is neuroprotective, and we have recently demonstrated its role in the retrograde degenerative process in motoneurons (MNs) in the spinal cord of rats after peripheral nerve root avulsion (RA) injury. SIRT2 has been suggested to exert effects opposite those of SIRT1; however, its roles in neurodegeneration and neuron response after nerve injury remain unclear. Here we compared the neuroprotective potentials of SIRT1 activation and SIRT2 inhibition in a mouse model of hypoglossal nerve axotomy.

The aim of this study was to compare the immediate postoperative period of participants rehabilitated with dental implants placed with a conventional technique or with a minimally invasive technique, without a mucoperiosteal flap elevation (flapless). Participants who needed implant placement were divided into two groups: one group was operated using a mucoperiosteal flap elevation (G_A), and the other with a flapless surgical technique (G_B). Objective clinical parameters including oral hygiene, mouth opening, inflammation (facial perimeter), surgical time and analgesic consumption, as well as subjective parameters of pain and degree of satisfaction with the procedure, were evaluated.

Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in elderly patients.

Rev Clin Esp (Barc)

March 2018

Servicio de Medicina Interna, Hospital Marina Baixa, La Vila Joiosa, Alicante, España; Sociedad Española de Medicina Interna (SEMI).

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) increases markedly with age. Antidiabetic treatment and the objectives of glycaemic control in elderly patients with DM2 should be individualised according to their biopsychosocial characteristics. In elderly patients for whom the benefits of intensive antidiabetic treatment are limited, the basic objectives should be to improve the quality of life, preserve functionality and avoid adverse effects, especially hypoglycaemia.

Diseases of the Synaptic Vesicle: A Potential New Group of Neurometabolic Disorders Affecting Neurotransmission.

The general concept of inborn error of metabolism is currently evolving into the interface between classical biochemistry and cellular biology. Basic neuroscience is providing increasing knowledge about the mechanisms of neurotransmission and novel related disorders are being described. There is a necessity of updating the classic concept of "inborn error of neurotransmitters (NT)" that considers mainly defects of synthesis and catabolism and transport of low weight NT molecules.
