Background: Professionals providing self-management support to parents regarding the care for their child with a chronic condition nowadays is an important aspect of child healthcare. This requires professionals to orient themselves towards partnership and collaboration with parents. The aims of the current study were the development and validation of the S-Scan-Parental self-management Support (S-scan - PS) as a tool for healthcare professionals to reflect on their attitude and practices regarding the support for parental self-management.

Inclusive leadership in the health professions and health professions education.

WHAT IS INCLUSION AND INCLUSIVE LEADERSHIP?: In this article, based on the literature and my own experiences, I try to shed light on the concepts of inclusion and inclusive leadership, as well as what leaders need to do in order to be inclusive. Inclusion means the act of including or being included in a group, which creates a sense of belonging as well as empowers individuals to contribute in an authentic and meaningful manner. Inclusive leadership is important in the health professions and health professions education so that health professionals and faculty in health professions education are able to contribute to their work in ways that they find meaningful.

Interprofessional teamwork is of high importance during stressful situations such as CPR. Stress can potentially influence team performance. This study explores the perception of stress and its stressors during performance under pressure, to be able to further adjust or develop training.

Diversity in the pathway from medical student to specialist in the Netherlands: a retrospective cohort study.

Background: Medical specialist workforces are not representative of the society they serve, partially due to loss of diversity in the path from student to specialist. We investigated which demographic characteristics of bachelor students of medicine (BSM) are associated with becoming a physician and (particular type of) medical specialist; and whether this suggests 'cloning' (reproduction of sameness) of the existing workforce.

Methods: We used a retrospective cohort design, based on Statistics Netherlands data of all first-year BSM in 2002-2004 in The Netherlands (N = 4503).

Inequality of opportunity in selection procedures limits diversity in higher education: An intersectional study of Dutch selective higher education programs.

Selection for higher education (HE) programs may hinder equal opportunities for applicants and thereby reduce student diversity and representativeness. However, variables which could play a role in inequality of opportunity are often studied separately from each other. Therefore, this retrospective cohort study conducts an innovative intersectional analysis of the inequality of opportunity in admissions to selective HE programs.

Adaptation and validation of the encoding of observations using CONSUL-MCC: A self-determination theory-based tool to observe consultations in maternity care.

Objective: During autonomy-supportive consultations, professionals use a need-supportive interaction style to facilitate patients' self-regulated behaviour. To improve maternity care professionals' need-supportive interactions, it is important to provide insights into their interaction style. No tool is currently available for measuring need-supportive interactions in maternity care.

Twelve tips for designing, implementing and sustaining interprofessional training units on hospital wards.

Dedicated Interprofessional Training Units (ITUs) in hospital wards are one way to prepare healthcare students for Interprofessional patient-centered care. Based on theoretical foundations, research, and our lived experiences of successes as well as failures, we propose 12 tips on how to prepare, implement, and sustain a dedicated ITU, combining the Grol & Wensing model for planning change with the Self-determination Theory of motivation. Start with a steering group, with a dedicated project leader, to translate awareness of the need for an ITU into wider awareness and motivation among stakeholders, with the ITU being a solution to authentic problems.

Trajectories of early adolescents' perceptions of school motivation and effort during the pandemic in Perú: A four time point longitudinal observational study.

In this longitudinal, observational study, following 883 adolescents (aged 11-15 years, grades 6th - 8th) we tracked changes in perceived school motivation and effort across four time points during the two years of remote education in Perú as a consequence of COVID-19 (retrospective reports before the pandemic, May 2020, July 2021, and November 2021). Compared to before the pandemic, levels of perceived school motivation and effort dropped sharply in May 2020 and continued to decrease across 2 years. Perceived school motivation was positively associated with perceived school effort at almost all time points.

Growth mindset and school burnout symptoms in young adolescents: the role of vagal activity as potential mediator.

Experiencing school burnout symptoms can have negative consequences for learning. A growth mindset, the belief that human qualities such as intelligence are malleable, has previously been correlated with fewer school burnout symptoms in late adolescents. This might be because adolescents with a stronger growth mindset show more adaptive self-regulation strategies and thereby increasing resilience against academic setbacks.

Testing the Reciprocal Effect between Value of Education, Time Investment, and Academic Achievement in a Large Non-Western Sample.

Many theories of motivation suggest that motivation and academic achievement reinforce each other over time, yet few longitudinal studies have examined behavioral pathways that may mediate interplay from motivation to achievement. Moreover, empirical studies so far have mostly focused on Western countries. In this study, we first examined whether students' value of education, as a measure of motivation, is reciprocally related to achievement (class rank and self-rated performance) in a sample of junior high schoolers in an East-Asian country (N = 3445, Korean Youth Panel Study).

How should we do equity, diversity and inclusion work in health professions education?

This is an editorial for the special collection on equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) for MedEdPublish. In this article, the guest advisors of this collection first reflect on the paradoxes in EDI in health professions education (HPE), then on the importance of recognising the existence of multiple authenticities on the basis of different contexts and settings, and finally encourage authors and readers to reflect on their position on the continuum of EDI work. They conclude the editorial by outlining the direction they wish to set for articles in the collection.

Basic psychological needs satisfaction as a mediator between clinical learning climate, self-regulated learning and perceived learning in the nursing education context.

Purpose: Self-regulated learning (SRL) can enhance students' learning process. Students need support to effectively regulate their learning. However, the effect of learning climate on SRL behavior, its ultimate effect on learning and the underlying mechanisms have not yet been established.

The reporting of ethical review and ethical considerations in articles published in medical education journals: A literature review.

Background: Health professions education research (HPE-R) must be ethically sound. Ethical review decisions and other ethical considerations should be clearly reported in journal articles to allow readers to assess the ethical soundness of the research. We explored and evaluated how ethical review decisions and ethical considerations for HPE-R are reported in health professions education (HPE) journal articles.

Understanding of healthcare professionals towards the roles and competencies of clinical pharmacists in South Africa.

Background: Incorporating clinical pharmacists in collaborative medical teams results in better patient treatment and health outcomes. In addition, the understanding of other healthcare professionals (HCPs) towards the role of clinical pharmacists can either facilitate or hinder the implementation and expansion of these services. The main distinction between pharmacists and clinical pharmacists lie in their different scope of duties.

Mindset and perceived parental support of autonomy safeguard adolescents' autonomous motivation during COVID-19 home-based learning.

During school closures throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, less support from peers and teachers may have required more autonomous motivation from adolescents. Little is known about factors that could shield against these negative effects. Driven by two influential motivational theories, we examined how mindset, feelings of school burnout and the three basic psychological needs of the self-determination theory, could predict changes in autonomous motivation when controlling for pre-pandemic levels of motivation.

Selection tools and student diversity in health professions education: a multi-site study.

Student diversity in health professions education (HPE) can be affected by selection procedures. Little is known about how different selection tools impact student diversity across programs using different combinations of traditional and broadened selection criteria. The present multi-site study examined the chances in selection of subgroups of applicants to HPE undergraduate programs with distinctive selection procedures, and their performance on corresponding selection tools.

Nature play in early childhood education: A systematic review and meta ethnography of qualitative research.

Play in nature-based environments in childhood education has positive benefits for child development. Although previous reviews showed the benefits of play in nature-based environments for child development they did not attempt to understand how and why nature-based environments contribute to play quality. This review aims to explore the value of play in nature-based environments compared to non-nature-based environments for developmental outcomes of young children (2-8 year).

Autonomy-supportive decision-making in maternity care during prenatal consultations: a qualitative interaction analysis.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify mechanisms of autonomy-supportive consultation (ASC) that maternity care professionals use during decision-making in prenatal consultations.

Design: This study was a descriptive, qualitative analysis of professional-patient interactions in maternity care, using concepts and analytic procedures of conversation analysis.

Setting: The prenatal consultations took place in hospitals and midwifery practices in the Netherlands.
