Alcohol use disorder (AUD) manifests differently in men and women, but little is known about sex differences in the brain's response to ethanol. It is known that the steroid hormone 17β-estradiol (E2) regulates voluntary ethanol consumption in female rodents. However, the role of E2 as a regulator of ethanol reward has not been investigated.

Background: Females are more vulnerable to developing cocaine addiction compared with males, a phenomenon that may be regulated by the steroid hormone 17β-estradiol. 17β-Estradiol enhances cocaine reward as measured by the conditioned place preference test. It is currently not known which estrogen receptor is involved or the neuroanatomical locations in which estrogen receptors act to enhance cocaine responses.

Purpose: To evaluate the long-term outcomes of laser-assisted subepithelial keratomileusis (LASEK) with intraoperative use of mitomycin C (MMC) performed on thin corneas for the correction of myopia.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 100 eyes with a preoperative central corneal thickness (CCT) thinner than 500 μm that underwent LASEK + MMC with at least 6 years of follow-up. Stability of visual acuity and refraction and the efficacy, safety, and predictability at the examinations 3 months and the last annual postoperative visit were analyzed.

Gender differences in psychiatric disorders such as addiction may be modulated by the steroid hormone estrogen. For instance, 17β-estradiol (E2), the predominant form of circulating estrogen in pre-menopausal females, increases ethanol consumption, suggesting that E2 may affect the rewarding properties of ethanol and thus the development of alcohol use disorder in females. The ventral tegmental area (VTA) is critically involved in the rewarding and reinforcing effects of ethanol.

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) is a receptor tyrosine kinase recently implicated in biochemical, physiological, and behavioral responses to ethanol. Thus, manipulation of ALK signaling may represent a novel approach to treating alcohol use disorder (AUD). Purpose: To examine the influence of previous soft contact lens (SCL) wear on corneal refractive surgery (CRS) outcomes when SCL wear is ceased for two weeks versus twenty-four hours, and also when compared to no wear, prior to CRS.

Methods: A retrospective examination of CRS patient records was carried out for two groups of patients- who ceased SCL wear for two weeks (n=45) and for twenty-four hours (n=49) prior to CRS and compared to a non-contact lens (NCL) control group (n=45 and n=49, respectively).
