Introduction: Throughout our 20 years of experience, we have used several different techniques for laparoscopic splenectomy (LS). However, two methods have been used most frequently: "vessels first" and "hilar transection".
Aim: To evaluate the outcomes of LS performed with these two different approaches.
Purpose: To systematically compare the efficacy, predictability, safety, postoperative haze, pain scores, and epithelial healing time of four corneal surface ablation procedures.
Methods: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and the U.S.

Bacteria of the genus are common components of the microbiomes of many naturally- and anthropogenically shaped environments. One species, , is unique within the genus because it is associated with opportunistic human infections. Therefore, strains of may serve as an interesting model to study the transition from a saprophytic to a pathogenic lifestyle in environmental bacteria.

Background: According to traditional textbooks on surgery, splenic flexure mobilization is suggested as a mandatory part of open rectal resection. However, its use in minimally invasive access seems to be limited. This stage of the procedure is considered difficult in the laparoscopic approach.

The age at which patients are undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy is increasing worldwide. The data on the outcome of this surgical procedure in the elderly is constantly expanding. This meta-analysis aims to assess the safety of pancreatoduodenectomy in elderly population, primarily focusing on morbidity and mortality.

Background: The ventral tegmental area (VTA) is important for alcohol-related reward and reinforcement. Mouse VTA neurons are hyposensitive to γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) during ethanol (EtOH) withdrawal, and GABA responsiveness is normalized by in vitro treatment with histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi). The present study examined the effect of a systemically administered HDACi, suberanilohydroxamic acid (SAHA) on GABA sensitivity, and related molecular changes in VTA neurons during withdrawal after chronic EtOH intake in rats.

We investigated the value of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analyses in determining the relationships among and evolutionary rates of Legionella species with long-term persistence in three healthcare facilities. We examined retrospective clinical and environmental isolates of Legionella micdadei and Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 isolates with identical PFGE DNA fingerprints sampled over the course of up to 18 years. WGS analyses demonstrated that heterogeneous populations of Legionella were present within each facility despite displaying the same PFGE profiles.

Purpose: Based on the assumption that high levels of intraocular pressure (IOP) during femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) may compromise the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), newer femtosecond platforms that operate without causing significant IOP elevation have been developed in recent years. However, this assumption has not been adequately tested. The aim of the current study was to evaluate possible changes in RFNL thickness in nonglaucomatous myopic patients undergoing FS-LASIK using the 60 KHz IntraLase device that significantly elevates the IOP for an appreciable period of time vs an advanced surface ablation technique (laser-assisted subepithelial keratomileusis, LASEK) that does not induce any IOP elevation.

Introduction: Laparoscopic splenectomy (LS) is the gold standard in treating immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). However, there are still some problems in decision-making when considering LS in patients with a very low platelet count (PLT).
Aim: To evaluate safety outcomes of LS in patients with severe ITP and very low PLT in comparison to those with higher PLT.

Introduction: Severe trauma causes damage to the protective barriers of the organism, and thus activates immunological reaction. Among substances secreted during this process pro-inflammatory cytokines are of high importance.
The Aim Of The Study: Severe trauma causing multiple injuries is more likely to lead to particularly intensive inflammatory reaction, which can sometimes lead to serious complications, even life-threatening.

The LIM domain only protein LMO3 is a transcriptional regulator that has been shown to regulate several behavioral responses to alcohol. Specifically, Lmo3 null (Lmo3) mice consume more ethanol in a binge-drinking test and show enhanced ethanol-induced sedation. Due to the high comorbidity of alcohol use and anxiety, we investigated anxiety-like behavior in Lmo3 mice.

Rationale: Recently, some ophthalmologists performed PRK or LASEK surgeries in FFKC suspicious patients, which is supposed to prevent FFKC evolvement via fibrotic scar formation. Our report indicates that keratectasia can occur after LASEK in FFKC suspicious patients, highlighting the importance of stricter regulation of patient recruitment before the procedure and postoperative follow-up.
Patient Concerns: This is a report of a 25-year-old man with poor corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) 6 years after LASEK.

Background: Laparoscopic splenectomy (LS) has become the gold standard in elective spleen surgery. Although it is considered relatively safe, treatment results vary depending on a hospital's profile and the experience of the surgeon and center. We would like to present experience of a high-volume referral center with minimally invasive operations of the spleen.

Despite debulking surgery and good initial response to chemotherapy, the majority of patients with advanced ovarian cancer relapse and succumb to their disease. Thus, there is a pressing need to improve treatment outcome. In the present study, the antitumor activity of histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor scriptaid in combination with bortezomib or conventional chemotherapeutics was tested in vitro against representative ovarian cancer cell lines: SKOV‑3, MDAH 2774, and OVP‑10.

The utility of Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) for monitoring intraocular pressure (IOP) in open-angle glaucoma (OAG) patients with a history of laser refractive surgery was investigated by comparing IOP fluctuations measured using GAT and dynamic contour tonometry (DCT) on the same day. In this retrospective study, patients were divided into one of two subgroups according to IOP fluctuation values using GAT: 43 eyes in the low IOP fluctuation group (LIFG [GAT fluctuation ≤1.7 mmHg]); and 55 eyes in the high IOP fluctuation group (HIFG [GAT fluctuation >1.

Purpose: To evaluate changes in clinical practice in the field of refractive surgery in Korea over the past 10 years.
Methods: A survey consisting of 59 multiple-choice questions regarding the preferred types of refractive surgery, excimer laser machine, and presbyopia surgery was mailed to 742 members of the Korean Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery in January 2016, and 50 members responded to the survey. These data were compared with the 2005 or 2007 survey results.
