Background And Aims: One of the factors playing a role in both the aging process and the etiopathogenesis of primary hypertension is oxidative stress. The purpose of this work was to estimate the production of nitric oxide (NO), oxidase activity of ceruloplasmin (Cp) and level of malondialdehyde (MDA), the end-product of lipid peroxidation in the blood of elderly patients with primary hypertension. The influence of treatment with the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor perindopril (P) on the above parameters was also ascertained.

Acetaminophen belongs to the antipyretic and analgesic drugs most commonly used all over the world. In western Europe, primarily in Great Britain, as well as in the US, increasing incidence of acute liver failure due to the overdose of the drug has been reported. The report presents a description of alcohol-paracetamol syndrome, which led to the development of acute hepatic failure with numerous complications.

The inhibitory effect of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) on alpha-adrenergic contraction is quite well known, but molecular mechanism of this inhibition is unclear. In the present study, the interaction between alpha-adrenoceptor and vasopressin receptor response, and LPS in rat tail artery was investigated using chemical stimulation. In the presence of LPS, noradrenaline, phenylephrine and arginine-vasopressin, concentration-response curves (CRCs) were shifted to the right with the change in maximal responses.

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of vitamins C and E on malondialdehyde (MDA) content and activities of key antioxidant enzymes: superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) as well as glomerular basement membrane (GBM) thickness in streptozotocin-induced diabetic kidney in rats. Wistar male rats were divided into following groups (12 rats each): the control, diabetic rats, diabetic rats whose drinking water was supplemented with vitamin C in a dose of 1.0 g/l or diet was supplemented with 200 mg of vitamin E/100 g fodder.

Background: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of verapamil (VP) on lipid peroxidation and activities of key antioxidant enzymes: superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px); as well as on glomerular basement membrane (GBM) thickness in streptozotocin-induced diabetic kidney in rats.

Methods: Wistar male rats were divided into three groups, 12 rats each: the control (C), diabetic rats (DR), and DR receiving VP, 7 mg/kg body weight in drinking water (DR + VP). Blood glucose (BG) and HbA(1c) levels, 24-h urinary albumin excretion (UAE) and body weight (BW) were measured every week (0-12 weeks).
