An Unusual Case of Acute Abdomen With Jaundice.

Adrenocortical carcinomas are rare but aggressive tumors that are frequently discovered as incidentalomas. Secretory tumors often lead to endocrine abnormalities, namely cushingoid features, virilization, or feminization. Non-functioning tumors, on the other hand, can be completely dormant with an insidious course or cause malaise, weight loss, abdominal pain, etc.

Application of Submandibular Intubation as Alternative to Elective Short-Term Tracheotomy for Particular Cases of Oral and Maxillofacial Tumors Resection and Defects Reconstruction.

Objective: To describe the cases of oral and maxillofacial tumors (OMFT) resection and defects reconstruction under submandibular intubation (SMI) performed in our institution; secondly, to systematically review and analyze the characteristics of studies about SMI in oral and maxillofacial surgery to estimate the incidence rate of complication.

Context: Several data from the literature have focused on the relationship between congenital sensorineural hearing loss, as well as acquired hearing loss, and their impact on cognition and the risk of dementia. However, few studies have been conducted on this subject in countries where access to hearing rehabilitation measures is limited. Thus, the objective of the present study was to investigate the relationship between sensorineural hearing loss and cognitive disorders in a correlational approach.

JAGN1 (Jagunal-homolog1) is a ER-resident transmembrane protein which is part of the early secretory pathway and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor receptor mediated signaling. Autosomal recessively inherited variants in the JAGN1 gene lead to congenital neutropenia, early-onset bacterial infections, aphthosis and skin abscesses due to aberrant differentiation and maturation of neutrophils. In addition, bone metabolism disorders and a syndromic phenotype, including facial features, short stature and neurodevelopmental delay, have been reported in affected patients.

A 3-dimensional comparative assessment of the dentoskeletal effects of clear aligners vs temporary skeletal anchorage device-assisted posterior intrusion in adolescents with anterior open bite: A single-center, retrospective, cohort study.

Introduction: The dentoskeletal effects of clear aligner treatment (CAT) with Invisalign vs temporary skeletal anchorage device-anchored Sydney intrusion spring (SIS) were compared in consecutively treated growing patients with anterior open bite using cone-beam computed tomography scans.

Methods: Fifteen adolescents treated exclusively with Invisalign, and 14 with SIS (first-phase treatment) were assessed retrospectively. Rigid-wise, voxel-based registration of pretreatment and posttreatment cone-beam computed tomography scans were performed using the anterior cranial base, maxillary plane, and mandibular body as reference regions.

Prognostic and functional role of the nuclear export receptor 1 (XPO1) in gastrointestinal cancers: a potential novel target?

In the last decades the survival of metastatic gastrointestinal (GI) cancer patients could have been significantly extended due to the introduction of targeted- and immunotherapy. However, only the minority of patients will experience long-lasting survival. Hence, novel therapeutics are clearly necessary for GI cancer patients.

Masseter muscle thickness before and after the correction of unilateral functional posterior crossbite in growing individuals: a prospective controlled clinical trial.

Objectives: To evaluate whether unilateral functional posterior crossbite in growing children creates an asymmetry in masseter muscle thickness and whether this asymmetry is normalized after crossbite correction.

Materials And Methods: Two groups of growing individuals were studied prospectively: (i) a treatment group: children with unilateral functional posterior crossbite, undergoing crossbite correction with maxillary expansion; and (ii) a control group: children without transversal malocclusions and orthodontic treatment. The thickness of the masseter muscles was measured bilaterally using ultrasonographic recordings at three time points: pre-treatment (T0); 9 months after (T1); and 30 months after posterior crossbite correction (T2); and at equivalent time points in the control group.

Background: The Borderline Personality Features Scale for Children (BPFSC-11) is a well-used, short, and easy-to-administer measure of borderline traits in young people. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Mexican Spanish version of the BPFSC-11 in a large community-based sample of Mexican adolescents. In addition, we evaluated the convergence between the borderline construct as measured by the BPFSC-11 and general personality functioning consistent with more contemporary personality disorder formulations to assess the nomological net of the BPFSC-11 total score.

The evolving treatment landscape of multiple myeloma in Portugal: A nation-wide retrospective cohort study of real-world clinical practice.

Objectives: To characterize variations in real-world treatment patterns in multiple myeloma (MM) in Portugal over a 5-year period.

Methods: A retrospective cohort multicenter study using secondary data of national hospital drug consumption database from 11 Portuguese public hospitals between 2017 and 2022.

Results: Number of MM-treated patients increased 53% over 5 years (from 825 to 1266 patients).

Background: The provision of a metabolic substrate is one mechanism by which hypothermic machine perfusion (HMP) of kidneys provides clinical benefit. This study aimed to describe metabolism in ex vivo human kidneys undergoing HMP before transplantation using C-labeled glucose as a metabolic tracer.

Methods: Cadaveric human kidneys were perfused with modified clinical-grade perfusion fluid (kidney perfusion solution [KPS-1], Organ Recovery Systems), in which glucose was uniformly enriched with the stable isotope C ([U-C] glucose).

Full endoscopic submandibular gland excision through the retroauricular hairline approach: A cohort study.

Introduction: Submandibular gland (SMG) excision can be achieved by conventional approach (Conv) through a cervical incision or endoscopic surgery (Endo). The aim of this study was to propose a new concept and technique of full endoscopic SMG excision through the retroauricular hairline incision and investigate its safety and feasibility.

Materials And Methods: A total of 141 patients with SMG diseases treated at our department from 2021 to 2024 were retrospectively enrolled in the Endo group (n = 74) and the Conv group (n = 67).

Background: Preclinical and clinical studies have demonstrated the advantages of oxygenated hypothermic machine perfusion (HMPO) during kidney preservation. The aim of this study was to compare different levels of oxygenation (0%, 21%, 50%, and 100%) during 22 h of active oxygenated HMP (HMPO) using oxygen preloading by bubbling oxygenation in the preservation solution and continuous surface oxygenation during MP in a porcine DCD model.

Literature indicates a potential association between dairy consumption and risk of Parkinson´s disease (PD), especially among men, yet the results remain inconclusive. We investigated this association in a large prospective European cohort. Dietary and non-dietary data was collected from 183,225 participants of the EPIC-for-Neurodegenerative-Diseases (EPIC4ND) cohort, a sub-cohort of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort.

Evaluation of the fabrication trueness and internal fit of additively manufactured two-piece zirconia abutments with different build orientations compared to subtractively manufactured abutments.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of build orientation on the fabrication trueness and fit of additively manufactured 2-piece zirconia abutments when compared with those manufactured subtractively in 3 mol% and 4 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (3Y-TZP and 4Y-TZP).

Methods: A titanium-base (Ti-base) abutment was digitized with a scan body and an industrial scanner to design a 2-piece zirconia abutment with a 50 µm cement gap. This design was used to manufacture zirconia abutments additively in different orientations (0-degree, AM-0; 15-degree, AM-15; 30-degree, AM-30; 45-degree, AM-45; 180-degree, AM-180) and subtractively from 3Y-TZP and 4Y-TZP (SM-3 and SM-4) (n=5).

B-Guide System: Improving the Predictability of Complete-Arch Implant and Prosthetic Placement Using Fixed Prosthesis Guides.

Objective: Computer-aided implant placement (CAIP) offers improved accuracy and reduced invasiveness. However, traditional static CAIP (sCAIP) protocols for complete-arch restorations often involve multiple guides and clinical steps, increasing the risk of soft tissue trauma and procedural complexity. This article introduces the B-guide technique, which integrates implant placement and interim prosthesis delivery into a single device to simplify the procedure and minimize tissue damage.

Distribution and volume of mitochondria in alveolar epithelial type 1 cells in infant and adult human lungs.

Alveolar epithelial type I (AE1) cells with their wide spatial expansion form approximately 95% of the outer surface area of the air-blood barrier inside the lung. Serial block-face scanning electron microscopy (SBF-SEM) investigations led to the hypothesis that AE1 cell mitochondria are preferentially distributed as aggregates in those parts of AE1 cells that are located above connective tissue pillars between capillaries, thus not increasing the thickness of the diffusion distance for oxygen and carbon dioxide. Furthermore, it was hypothesised that postnatal development requires adapting the amount and distribution of mitochondria in AE1 cells.

Effect of masticatory muscle function on the craniofacial sutures of the anterior viscerocranium in growing rats.

The transverse dimensions of internasal and nasopremaxillary sutures in rats were assessed at different ages and following different dietary functional demands.Eighty-four male Wistar rats were divided into two groups fed either a hard or a soft diet from 4 weeks of age, and sacrificed at 4 weeks (baseline: n = 12),16 weeks (n = 24), 26 weeks (n = 24), or 38 weeks (n = 24) of age. High-resolution micro-computed tomograms of the internasal and left nasopremaxillary sutures were obtained with 10 µm voxel size and 5 × 5 mm field of view.

The Validity of a Smartphone-Based Method for Acquiring 3D Images of the Face.

To evaluate the accuracy and reproducibility of measurements obtained using the Bellus3D Face Application on a mobile smartphone by comparing them to direct measurements on pre-marked and blank face scans.
