Post-pregnancy breast cancer often carries a poor prognosis, posing a major clinical challenge. The increasing trend of later-life pregnancies exacerbates this risk, highlighting the need for effective chemoprevention strategies. Current options, limited to selective estrogen receptor modulators, aromatase inhibitors, or surgical procedures, offer limited efficacy and considerable side effects.

Article Synopsis
  • Some lipoprotein disorders linked to premature cardiovascular disease (PCVD) are not identified by standard lipid tests.
  • A case-control study involving 125 PCVD patients and 190 controls assessed the predictive value of serum small dense LDL cholesterol (sdLDL-C) and other lipoprotein characteristics using advanced techniques like nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).
  • PCVD patients exhibited lower total LDL particles but higher levels of sdLDL-C and specific triglycerides, revealing that these factors are strong predictors of PCVD, highlighting the need for more detailed lipoprotein analysis beyond conventional profiles.

Objectives: Baricitinib is supposed to have a double effect on SARS-CoV2 infection. Firstly, it reduces the inflammatory response through the inhibition of the Januse-Kinase signalling transducer and activator of transcription (JAK-STAT) pathway. Moreover, it reduces the receptor mediated viral endocytosis by AP2-associated protein kinase 1 (AAK1) inhibition.

Human papillomavirus prevalence and type distribution in penile carcinoma.

J Clin Pathol

October 2009

Unit of Infections and Cancer (UNIC), Cancer Epidemiology Research Program, Institut Català d' Oncologia, IDIBELL, L' Hospitalet de Ll, Barcelona, Spain.

Background: Penile carcinoma is an uncommon and potentially mutilating disease with a heterogeneous aetiology. Several risk factors have been established for its development. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection seems to play an important role in the development of a subset of these carcinomas and its presence is thought to be related to the histological type.

Immunoglobulin E levels and risk of lymphoma in a case-control study in Spain.

Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev

July 2007

Epidemiology and Cancer Registry Unit, Institut Català d' Oncologia, Gran Via km 2.7, 08907 L' Hospitalet de Ll., Barcelona, Spain.

Epidemiologic studies have shown an inverse association between atopy and malignant lymphoma, but results are inconsistent. We investigated levels of IgE, before and after commencement of treatment, and evaluated lymphoma risk in relation to total and specific IgE levels. Serum levels of IgM, IgA, and IgG were also measured.

Article Synopsis
  • Improving end-of-life care for elderly patients with chronic diseases in hospitals is vital, and this study evaluated the circumstances of death among patients with dementia and heart failure along with caregivers' perspectives.
  • Out of 102 patients studied, caregivers reported varying levels of satisfaction with the accuracy of clinical information, symptom control, and overall quality of end-of-life care, with a notable percentage still experiencing pain and dyspnea.
  • Findings indicate a need for enhancements in palliative care, specifically in communication of clinical details and managing symptoms effectively, highlighting that although many aspects like DNR orders and palliative care initiation were followed, there's room for improvement.

Introduction: Cavernous angiomas account for 5-13% of all vascular malformations. In 75% of cases they are situated in the posterior fossa and up to 30% are associated with abnormal venous drainage. The main complication is haemorrhage; the presence of a neurological focus without radiological evidence of bleeding is very rare.

[Sphincter function disorders. physiopathology and neurophysiological study].

Rev Neurol

Miction and defecation disturbances are very frequent in the general population and far more so among neurological patients. It is essential to know the physiopathology of these disorders in clinical practice. The neurological control of these functions is carried out by automatisms that are regulated in the nuclei of the brain stem through somatic and vegetative peripheral structures that act simultaneously.

Survival evaluation of treatment modality in squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx.

J Craniomaxillofac Surg

Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, Ciutat Sanitària Universitària de Bellvitge, L'Hospitalet de Ll., Barcelona, Spain.

The treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the mouth and oropharynx continues to change. In this primary report, we compared the results obtained by combined surgery and radiation therapy, or either modality alone. Other methods such as brachytherapy, or hyperfractionated radiotherapy, were not included in our protocols.

Introduction: Purely bulbar hematomas are not common (0.25%-0.50% of all intraparenchymatous hematomas), probably because of the particular characteristics of the anatomy and hemodynamics of the bulbar circulation.

Total perturbation correction factor for PTW and NACP plane parallel chambers in electron beams.

Servicio de Física y Pratección Radiológica, Hospital de Bellvitge Principes de España, L'Hospitalet de Ll., Barcelona, Spain.

The international protocols of electron dosimetry published by the Nordic Association of Clinical Physics and the Sociedad Española de Física Médica recommend the use of a total perturbation correction factor pu, pp which is constant for all plane parallel chambers. In this work we have compared the dose measured with the PTW-Markus and NACP plane parallel chambers in respect to a cylindrical one. The obtained results indicate that for the ionization chamber NACP the value of pu, pp = 1.
