Pharmacy Department, Institut Català Oncologia (ICO), Institut d'Investigació Biomèdica de Bellvitge (IDIBELL), L'Hospitalet Llobregat, 08908 Barcelona, Spain.

Everolimus, an oral inhibitor of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), is actually used to prevent organ transplant rejection and treat metastatic breast, renal, and neuroendocrine cancers. Despite significant pharmacokinetic variability among patients, routine therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is not commonly used in oncology. The aim of this multicenter, prospective observational cohort study is to assess the prevalence of everolimus minimum concentration at a steady state (Cminss) falling outside the therapeutic range (10-26.

During pregnancy, thyroid function disorders are associated with multiple complications, both maternal and foetal. In recent years, numerous Clinical Practice Guidelines have been developed to facilitate the identification and correct management of thyroid disease in pregnant women. However, this proliferation of guidelines has led to confusion by proposing different cut-off points for reference values and different recommendations for similar situations.

Daptomycin Plus Fosfomycin Versus Daptomycin Alone for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia and Endocarditis: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Clin Infect Dis

May 2021

Department of Infectious Diseases, Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge, Institut Investigacions Biomèdiques de Bellvitge, University of Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain.

Background: We aimed to determine whether daptomycin plus fosfomycin provides higher treatment success than daptomycin alone for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia and endocarditis.

Methods: A randomized (1:1) phase 3 superiority, open-label, and parallel group clinical trial of adult inpatients with MRSA bacteremia was conducted at 18 Spanish hospitals. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either 10 mg/kg of daptomycin intravenously daily plus 2 g of fosfomycin intravenously every 6 hours, or 10 mg/kg of daptomycin intravenously daily.

Background And Aim: No marker to categorise the severity of chronic intestinal failure (CIF) has been developed. A 1-year international survey was carried out to investigate whether the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism clinical classification of CIF, based on the type and volume of the intravenous supplementation (IVS), could be an indicator of CIF severity.

Methods: At baseline, participating home parenteral nutrition (HPN) centres enrolled all adults with ongoing CIF due to non-malignant disease; demographic data, body mass index, CIF mechanism, underlying disease, HPN duration and IVS category were recorded for each patient.

The integration of cell extrinsic and intrinsic signals is required to maintain appropriate cell physiology and homeostasis. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are cytokines that belong to the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily, which play a key role in embryogenesis, organogenesis and regulation of whole-body homeostasis. BMPs interact with membrane receptors that transduce information to the nucleus through SMAD-dependent and independent pathways, including PI3K-AKT and MAPKs.

Laboratory of Experimental Infection, Infectious Diseases Service, IDIBELL, Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge, Feixa Llarga, L'Hospitalet Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain.

We compared the efficacies of daptomycin (doses equivalent to 8 to 10 mg/kg of body weight/day in humans) and cloxacillin alone with those of cloxacillin-rifampin and cloxacillin-daptomycin combinations, using a tissue cage methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) infection model. Monotherapies were less effective than combinations (P<0.05), and daptomycin resistance emerged.

To examine the molecular mechanisms underlying breast cancer metastasis in liver and search for potential markers of metastatic progression in soft-tissue, we analyzed metastatic variants developed from the highly metastatic MDA-MB 435 cell line through in vivo stepwise selection in the athymic mice. Comparative proteomic analysis using two-dimensional electrophoresis (2DE-DIGE) revealed that 74 protein spots were reproducibly more than doubled in liver metastatic cells compared to parental counterpart. From 22 proteins identified by MALDI-TOF, belonging to intermediate filaments, intracellular transport and ATP synthesis, we generated a protein-protein interaction network containing 496 nodes, 12 of which interacted.

Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections: an emerging threat in Spain.

Clin Microbiol Infect

April 2008

Infectious Diseases Service, Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge, L'Hospitalet Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain.

Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) has not been recognised previously as a cause of MRSA infections in Spain. Nineteen patients carrying Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-positive MRSA were identified in a Barcelona hospital, of whom 15 were immigrants, mostly from South America. Twelve developed skin and soft-tissue infections.
