Purpose: The assessment of p16INK4a (p16) in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) has been incorporated into tumor classification, as p16 has been shown to impact survival probability. However, a recent study demonstrated that human papillomavirus (HPV) status in addition to p16 may have a better discriminatory effect on survival probability. This study aims to determine the impact of combined evaluation of p16 and HPV on prognosis.

Macrophages orchestrate tissue homeostasis and immunity. In the tumor microenvironment (TME), macrophage presence is largely associated with poor prognosis because of their reprogramming into immunosuppressive cells. We investigated the effects of hypoxia, a TME-associated feature, on the functional, epigenetic, and transcriptional reprogramming of macrophages and found that hypoxia boosts their immunogenicity.

Oncolytic viruses often face challenges in achieving optimal antitumor immunity as standalone therapies. The penton base RGD-integrin interactions play a significant role in wild-type adenovirus-induced innate immune responses. To modify these responses, we present ISC301, a novel oncolytic adenovirus engineered by deleting the natural RGD motifs in the penton base while incorporating artificial RGD motifs in the fiber knobs.

TGF-β and Cancer Group, Oncobell Program, Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL), L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain.

Iron overload and cellular senescence have been implicated in liver fibrosis, but their possible mechanistic connection has not been explored. To address this, we have delved into the role of iron and senescence in an experimental model of chronic liver injury, analyzing whether an iron chelator would prevent liver fibrosis by decreasing hepatocyte senescence. The model of carbon tetrachloride (CCl) in mice was used as an experimental model of liver fibrosis.

Neuroligin-2 (Nlgn2) is a key synaptic adhesion protein at virtually all GABAergic synapses, which recruits GABARs by promoting assembly of the postsynaptic gephyrin scaffold. Intriguingly, loss of Nlgn2 differentially affects subsets of GABAergic synapses, indicating that synapse-specific interactors and redundancies define its function, but the nature of these interactions remain poorly understood. Here we investigated how Nlgn2 function in hippocampal area CA1 is modulated by two proposed interaction partners, MDGA1 and MDGA2.

β-Cell Regeneration Is Driven by Pancreatic Plasticity.

Adv Anat Embryol Cell Biol

September 2024

Department of Physiological Science, School of Medicine, University of Barcelona, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain.

The pancreas has been considered a non-regenerative organ. β cells lost in diabetes are not replaced due to the inability of the pancreas to regenerate. However, ample evidence generated in the last few decades using murine models has demonstrated that the pancreas has a remarkable plasticity wherein differentiated cells can change cell fate toward a β-like cell phenotype.
