Background Early generation drug-eluting stents (DESs) showed a high grade of coronary endothelial dysfunction that was attributed to lack of stent reendothelialization. Endothelium-dependent vasomotor response of current DESs and bioresorbable scaffolds (BRSs) remains unknown. This study sought to assess the device-related endothelial function of current devices and to correlate neointima healing with endothelial function.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to explore how early hospital readmissions (within 30 days) affect the survival rates of patients with Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) after their hospital stay.
  • - Out of 2,238 patients admitted to a respiratory ward from 2013 to 2016, 98 were diagnosed with ILD, and 74 were discharged, with 25% experiencing in-hospital mortality; 20.2% of those discharged were readmitted early.
  • - Findings revealed that early readmission is strongly linked to increased mortality rates at both 90 days and one year after discharge, indicating a need for preventive measures and further research on contributing factors.

Background: The GSK3β has been associated to pathological functions in neurodegenerative diseases. This kinase is involved in hyperphosphorylation of microtubule-associated tau protein, leading to aggregation andformation of NFTs. It has clearly been shown that GSK3β is regulated at posttranslational level: phosphorylation at Tyr216 activates kinase, while phosphorylation at Ser9 is essential to inhibit its activity.

Estimating long-term crude probability of death among young breast cancer patients: a Bayesian approach.

Tumori

December 2016

Girona Cancer Registry and Epidemiology Unit, Plan for Oncology of the Catalonian Government, Catalan Institute of Oncology, Descriptive Epidemiology, Genetics and Cancer Prevention Group, Girona Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBGI), Girona - Spain.

Aims And Background: Bayesian survival analysis was applied to assess the long-term survival and probability of death due to breast cancer (BC) in Girona, the Spanish region with the highest BC incidence.

Methods: A Bayesian autoregressive model was implemented to compare survival indicators between the periods 1985-1994 and 1995-2004. We assessed the long-term excess hazard of death, relative survival (RS), and crude probability of death due to BC (PBC) up to 20 years after BC diagnosis, reporting the 95% credible intervals (CI) of these indicators.

A trifluorinated thiazoline scaffold leading to pro-apoptotic agents targeting prohibitins.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

September 2014

Departament de Ciències Fisiològiques II, University of Barcelona, Institut d'Investigació Biomèdica de Bellvitge (IDIBELL), L'Hospitalet de Llobregat (Spain).

A new class of small molecules, with an unprecedented trifluorothiazoline scaffold, were synthesized and their pro-apoptotic activity was evaluated. With an EC50 in the low micromolar range, these compounds proved to be potent inducers of apoptosis in a broad spectrum of tumor cell lines, regardless of the functional status of p53. Fast structure-activity relationship studies allowed the preparation of the strongest apoptosis-inducing candidate.

Cannabinoids for treatment of Alzheimer's disease: moving toward the clinic.

The limited effectiveness of current therapies against Alzheimer's disease (AD) highlights the need for intensifying research efforts devoted to developing new agents for preventing or retarding the disease process. During the last few years, targeting the endogenous cannabinoid system has emerged as a potential therapeutic approach to treat Alzheimer. The endocannabinoid system is composed by a number of cannabinoid receptors, including the well-characterized CB1 and CB2 receptors, with their endogenous ligands and the enzymes related to the synthesis and degradation of these endocannabinoid compounds.

BMP signaling in telencephalic neural cell specification and maturation.

Front Cell Neurosci

June 2013

Departament de Ciències Fisiològiques II, Institut d'Investigació Biomèdica de Bellvitge, Universitat de Barcelona, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat Spain.

Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) make up a family of morphogens that are critical for patterning, development, and function of the central and peripheral nervous system. Their effects on neural cells are pleiotropic and highly dynamic depending on the stage of development and the local niche. Neural cells display a broad expression profile of BMP ligands, receptors, and transducer molecules.

The landscape of cancer treatment has dramatically changed over the last four decades. The age when surgery and radiotherapy were the only effective way to fight tumour growth has ended. A complex scenario where the molecular features of tumours seem to be the cornerstone of any therapy is now emerging.

WAERS: an application for Web-assisted estimation of relative survival.

Med Inform Internet Med

September 2007

Servei d'Epidemiologia i Registre del Càncer, Institut Català d'Oncologia, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat-Spain, Barcelona, Spain.

Net cancer survival estimation is usually performed by computing relative survival (RS), which is defined as the ratio between observed and expected survival rates. The mortality of a reference population is required in order to compute the expected survival rate, which can be performed using a variety of statistical packages. A new Web interface to compute RS, called WAERS, has been developed by the Catalan Institute of Oncology.
