We report a 73-year-old Japanese man with early onset pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) caused by subcutaneous administration of recombinant epoetin-β. Two months after the start of epoetin therapy, he developed PRCA. Anti-erythropoietin (EPO) antibody, detected in the patient's serum by enzyme immunoassay and radioimmunoprecipitation method, inhibited EPO-dependent growth of AS-E2 cells in vitro.

We describe an autopsied case of an 86-year-old woman who presented with acute tetraparesis, bulbar palsy, and respiratory insufficiency. MRI showed a T2 hyperintensity lesion in the medulla oblongata and C1 and C2 level cervical cord, and an unruptured aneurysm in the left posterior inferior cerebellar artery. With an initial diagnosis of Bickerstaffs brainstem encephalitis, we started corticosteroid therapy.

Alcaptonuria is a hereditary disease, also known as black hip, where there is an accumulation of homogentisic acid pigmentation in joint cartilages. We describe a 74-year-old woman who showed acute destruction of her left hip joint. She received a total hip arthroplasty on her right side in July 2000, and was diagnosed with ochronosis.

We report a case of primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) who responded well to initial systemic chemotherapy, but subsequently developed breast metastasis with local recurrence in the brain 27 months after complete remission. The 53-year-old female suddenly felt weakness in her left extremity. She was transferred to the emergency ward in our hospital.

1121 cases of patients with cerebrovascular disease (CVD) and non-CVD (NCVD) were evaluated by sex and age groups for the clinical differences between mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) and it's double product, mean pulse rate pressure (mPRP = MAP x pulse rate). Two treatment arms were also compared. One group were given antihypertensive agent therapy (AHA), while the others were given lifestyle modification (LSM).
