Neurotoxic microglia-provoked neuroinflammation is implicated in cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Supplementation with , phosphatidylserine, , and propolis is reported to improve the cognitive functions of elderly people; however, the underlying mechanisms of this combination of natural ingredients are unknown. We investigated the effects of a mixture of extracts from propolis, , , phosphatidylserine, , and (mixture) on microglia polarization after exposure to amyloid β (Aβ, 1 μM) and lipopolysaccharide from (PgLPS, 1 μg/mL), using MG6 and BV2 microglial cells.

Thus, we aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the use of antithrombin for sepsis and a meta-regression analysis of antithrombin dosage.
Methods: We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies of adult patients with sepsis who received antithrombin.
Accurate 3D shape measurement is crucial for surgical support and alignment in robotic surgery systems. Stereo cameras in laparoscopes offer a potential solution; however, their accuracy in stereo image matching diminishes when the target image has few textures. Although stereo matching with deep learning has gained significant attention, supervised learning requires a large dataset of images with depth annotations, which are scarce for laparoscopes.

The patient developed anemia secondary to chronic bleeding gastric hyperplastic polyps, necessitating endoscopic mucosal resection. Despite attempts to manage post-endoscopic mucosal resection bleeding from a gastric ulcer by endoscopic hemostasis using hemostatic forceps, local hemostatic agents, and polyglycolic acid sheets, the bleeding persisted.

Aim: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are less effective in mismatch repair (MMR)-proficient (pMMR) colorectal cancers (CRCs) than in MMR-deficient CRCs. Here, we investigated changes in the tumor microenvironment after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) without radiotherapy in locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) and the potential of ICIs as therapeutic agents for pMMR CRCs.
Methods: This was an ad hoc analysis of a KSCC1301 randomized phase II trial in which patients with untreated resectable LARC were randomly assigned to receive S-1 and oxaliplatin or folinic acid, 5-fluorouracil, and oxaliplatin as NAC.
Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has a high mortality rate owing to its late diagnosis and aggression. In addition, there are relatively few minimally invasive screening methods for the early detection of PDAC, making the identification of biomarkers for this disease a critical priority. Recent studies have reported that microRNAs in extracellular vesicles (EV-miRs) from bodily fluids can be useful for the diagnosis of PDACs.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and its reduced form (NADH) are key cofactors serving as essential hydrogen acceptors and donors to facilitate energy and material conversions under mild conditions. We demonstrate direct electrochemical conversion to achieve highly efficient regeneration of enzymatically active 1,4-NADH using a Pt-modified TiO catalyst grown directly on a Ti mesh electrode (Pt-TOT). Spectral analyses revealed that defects formed by the inclusion of Pt species in the lattice of TiO play a critical role in the regeneration process.

We previously presented the AB score, a simple user-friendly HF risk score, and validated it in a small single-center cohort. In the present study, we validated it in a larger nationwide cohort.

, a freshwater crab species endemic to Japan, has the largest distribution range amongst the 19 known species in the country. Due to its low dispersal capability and restricted habitat to freshwater, it serves as an excellent model for understanding gene flow between geographically isolated populations. In this study, we analysed the genetic relationships of 26 populations collected from different locations in the Japanese archipelago using two mitochondrial DNA regions - cytochrome oxidase subunit I ( and cytochrome b ().

Photoswitchable fluorescent molecules (PSFMs) are positioned as valuable tools for biomolecule localization tracking and super-resolution imaging technologies due to their unique ability to reversibly control fluorescence intensity upon light irradiation. Despite the high demand for PSFMs that are suitable for live-cell imaging, no general method has been reported that enables reversible fluorescence control on proteins of interest in living cells. Herein, we have established a platform to realize reversible fluorescence switching in living cells by adapting a protein labeling system.

Aim: Postoperative dysphagia after emergency abdominal surgery (EAS) in patients of advanced age has become problematic, and appropriate dysphagia management is needed. This study was performed to identify predictive factors of dysphagia after EAS and to explore the usefulness of swallowing screening tools (SSTs).
Methods: This retrospective study included 267 patients of advanced age who underwent EAS from 2012 to 2022.
Background: Higher cholesterol absorption has been reported to be related to a higher incidence of cardiovascular events (CVEs). The KEEP (Kyushu Elderly Ezetimibe Phytosterol) study, a substudy of the EWTOPIA 75 (Ezetimibe Lipid-Lowering Trial on Prevention of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease in 75 or Older) study, investigated the relationships of cholesterol absorption and synthesis markers with CVEs in older old individuals with hypercholesterolemia, particularly in relation to ezetimibe treatment.
Methods And Results: Eligible patients were those aged ≥75 years who had low-density lipoprotein cholesterol ≥140 mg/dL, no history of coronary artery disease, and no recent use of lipid-lowering drugs.

Hypertension is the leading cardiovascular risk factor worldwide. However, in Japan, only 30% of patients have their blood pressure controlled under 140/90 mmHg, and nonadherence to antihypertensives is thought to be a reason for the poor control of hypertension. We therefore sought to assess the adherence to hypertension treatment and to evaluate factors influencing patients' adherence in a large, representative sample of the Japanese population.

Mutations in the gene encoding the transient receptor potential vanilloid member 4 (TRPV4), a Ca permeable nonselective cation channel, cause TRPV4-related disorders. TRPV4 is widely expressed in the brain; however, the pathogenesis underlying TRPV4-mediated Ca deregulation in neurodevelopment remains unresolved and an effective therapeutic strategy remains to be established. These issues were addressed by isolating mutant dental pulp stem cells from a tooth donated by a child diagnosed with metatropic dysplasia with neurodevelopmental comorbidities caused by a gain-of-function TRPV4 mutation, c.
