Minimalist photo-reactive probes, which consist of a photo-reactive group and a tag for detection of target proteins, are useful tools in chemical biology. Although several diazirine-based and aryl azide-based minimalist probes are available, no keto-based minimalist probe has yet been reported. Here we describe minimalist probes based on a 2-thienyl-substituted α-ketoamide bearing an alkyne group on the thiophene ring.

A synthetic route to trans-configured tetrahydrothiophenes (THTs) through Fe(OTf) -promoted [3+2] cycloaddition of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes with thionoesters was developed. The cycloaddition proceeded in high yield with high diastereoselectivity, affording transient α-alkoxy THTs. Not only aromatic and aliphatic thionoesters, but also thionolactone were applicable to the present iron catalysis.

Myxoid liposarcoma is the second most common liposarcoma. Although myxoid liposarcoma is relatively chemosensitive and thus a good candidate for chemotherapy, cases with relapsed or metastatic disease still have poor outcome. Here, we performed a gene microarray analysis to compare the gene expression profiles in six clinical myxoid liposarcoma samples and three normal adipose tissue samples, and to identify molecular biomarkers that would be useful as diagnostic markers or treatment targets in myxoid liposarcoma.

CD82/KAI1, a member of the tetraspanin superfamily, is a suppressor of metastasis and CD82 inhibits canonical Wnt signaling via downregulation of several Frizzled (FZD) isoforms, resulting in accumulation of β-catenin at the cell membrane. In this study, we investigated the mechanism through which CD82 inhibited FZD expression by examining the effects of microRNAs (miRNAs). The miRanda algorithm predicted 11 miRNAs from FZD sequences.

Departments of Dermatology Hematology and Oncology, Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Kyushu University Maidashi, Fukuoka, Japan.

A 50-year-old female patient, who had had a long-term history of myelodysplastic syndrome and type II diabetes mellitus, had developed acute myelogenous leukemia and received allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT). She was being treated with tacrolimus, methotrexate and prednisolone for prophylaxis and treatment of graft-versus-host disease, and with intensive insulin therapy for better glycemic control. The patient suddenly developed marked leg edema at 27 days after starting intensive insulin therapy (on day 40 after BMT) without coexistence or exacerbation of apparent causes such as renal failure, cardiac dysfunction or leg thrombosis around the onset of leg edema.

Percutaneous vertebroplasty is a radiologically guided therapeutic procedure that consists of percutaneous injection of polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA) into pathologic vertebral bodies. It is a minimally invasive procedure that is effective in the treatment of pain resulting from bone metastasis. This procedure has the advantage of providing rapid pain relief and spinal stabilization.

An easily customized, random allocation system using the minimization method for multi-institutional clinical trials.

In a randomized clinical trial, random allocation of patients to treatment groups should be done to balance in the distribution of prognostic factors. Random allocation in a multi-institutional randomized clinical trial is conducted by a coordinating center, independent of the medical institution the attending doctor uses for his/her practice. This study provides a sophisticated system for doing an exact random allocation of patients to treatment groups.
