Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the differential impact of disease activity and severity on functional status and patient satisfaction in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) using cluster analysis on data from the FRANK registry.
Methods: Data from 3,619 RA patients in the FRANK registry were analysed. Patients were grouped using hierarchical and k-means cluster analyses based on age, physician's global assessment (PhGA), patient's pain assessment (PtPA), and Steinbrocker stage.

Introduction: To assess the susceptibility of epidemic influenza viruses to the four most used neuraminidase inhibitors (NAIs) during the 2023-24 influenza season in Japan, we measured the 50 % inhibitory concentration (IC) of oseltamivir, peramivir, zanamivir, and laninamivir in virus isolates from the sample of 100 patients.
Methods: Viral isolation was done using specimens obtained before and after treatment, with the type/subtype determined by RT-PCR using type- and subtype-specific primers. IC values were determined by a neuraminidase inhibition assay using a fluorescent substrate.

In this study, we investigated the measurable residual leukemic stem cell (MR-LSC) population after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) for high-risk acute myeloid leukemia (AML), utilizing T-cell immunoglobulin mucin-3 (TIM-3) expression as a functional marker of AML leukemic stem cells (LSCs). Analysis of the CD34CD38 fraction of bone marrow cells immediately after achievement of engraftment revealed the presence of both TIM-3LSCs and TIM-3 donor hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) at varying ratios. Genetic analysis confirmed that TIM-3 cells harbored patient-specific mutations identical to those found in AML clones, whereas TIM-3 cells did not, indicating that TIM-3CD34CD38 cells represent residual AML LSCs.

Background: To evaluate whether sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (SZC) enables the uptitration of spironolactone without increasing the risk of hyper- and hypokalemia in patients with heart failure with reduced and mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF and HFmrEF) and moderate/severe chronic kidney disease (CKD) who developed hyperkalemia during treatment with suboptimal spironolactone dose.
Methods: The REGISTA-K is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial that examined the efficacy and safety of SZC in uptitrating spironolactone without the occurrence of hyperkalemia or hypokalemia. A total of 266 patients with HFrEF and HFmrEF and hyperkalemia will be randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive either SZC or placebo after treating hyperkalemia with SZC at 25 sites in Japan.

Background: Clinical data on patients infected with influenza B Victoria (BV) after the approval of baloxavir is lacking.
Methods: This observational study of the Japanese 2023-2024 influenza season analyzed data from 25 outpatients with A(H1N1)pdm09, 36 with A(H3N2), and 65 with BV. Viral samples were collected before and after administering an antiviral (70 patients received baloxavir and 56 received a neuraminidase inhibitor), on days 1, 5, and 10.

Background: Postoperative shivering is mainly associated with low body temperature. However, postoperative shivering can develop even at normal or high core temperatures. This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with postoperative shivering in patients with maintained core temperature after surgery.

According to the 2016 World Health Organization classification, a germline DEAD-box helicase 41 gene () mutation with myeloid neoplasms has been newly classified. The clinical course of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with a germline mutation has not yet been clarified. In the early phase, this condition is slowly progressive, the rate of remission induction is high, and the prognosis is good.

Background: The management of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) has advanced significantly in recent years, thereby improving patient prognosis. However, the impact of cancer on the outcomes of patients with CTEPH under current treatment remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of cancer in patients with CTEPH and determine how comorbid cancer affects their prognosis and clinical course.

Purpose: We validated claims-based algorithms using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) to identify patients with the first-ever coronavirus disease (COVID-19) onset between May 2020 and August 2022.
Methods: The study cohort was comprised of residents of one municipality enrolled in a public insurance program. This study used data provided by the municipality, including residents' insurer-based medical claims data linked to the Health Center Real-time Information-Sharing System (HER-SYS).

This study retrospectively compared outcomes of various allogeneic haematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) platforms in patients with adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma. Platforms included human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-haploidentical-related donors using post-transplant cyclophosphamide (PTCY), HLA-matched related donors (MRD), HLA-matched unrelated donors (MUD) and cord blood transplantation (CBT). Patients who underwent their first allo-HCT between 2016 and 2021 were included.

Unlabelled: Evaluating SARS-CoV-2 viral loads in nasopharyngeal (NP) and saliva samples, factors affecting viral loads, and the performance of rapid antigen testing (RAT) have not been comprehensively conducted during SARS-CoV-2 Omicron epidemic. This prospective study included outpatients enrolled during Omicron variant period in Japan. Paired NP swab and saliva samples were collected to measure viral loads by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR).

Aim: In this subanalysis of the EXPAND study, we evaluated the risks and benefits of rivaroxaban plus antiplatelet therapy (APT) for patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) complicated by stable coronary artery disease (CAD), ischemic stroke, or peripheral artery disease (PAD).
Methods: From the EXPAND study population (n=7,141), patients with NVAF complicated by stable CAD (n=886), ischemic stroke (n=1,231), or PAD (n=160) were included. Patients complicated by any of them were set as ALL (n=2,030).

Introduction: A public oral health screening, periodontal disease screening, has been implemented in Japan, but it remains unclear whether screening encourages subsequent regular dental visits. This study aimed to examine whether people who underwent periodontal disease screening were more likely to regularly visit dentists after undergoing the screening than before using a difference-in-differences (DID) approach.
Methods: This study used health care claims data of municipality residents who underwent periodontal disease screening in 2017 or 2018.

Efficient elimination of apoptotic cells within epithelial cell sheets is crucial for preserving epithelial barrier integrity. It is well established that immediate neighbors of an apoptotic cell actively participate in its removal by enclosing it within a wall of actomyosin, pushing it out in a purse-string manner in a process called apical extrusion. Here, we found that sustained elevation of calcium ions in neighboring epithelial cells is necessary to generate the contractility required for apoptotic cell elimination.
