To restore functions of long bones and avoid reconstruction failure, segmental defects should be quickly repaired using abundant amounts of regenerated bone with high mechanical strength and orientation along the bone axis. Although both bone volume and bone matrix orientation are important for faster restoration of long bones with segmental defects, researchers have primarily focused on the former. Artificial bone scaffolds with uniaxial channels, (e.

Objective: One serious side effect of combined oral contraceptives (COCs) is venous thromboembolism. Reduced activity in activated protein C-related coagulation pathways is attributable to low protein S activity in one-third of Japanese patients with deep vein thrombosis. Herer, we quantified the behavior of protein S-specific activity in response to dienogest (DNG) and COCs using the protein S-specific activity assay system to explore its potential utility as a thrombosis marker.

The aging global population is generating an ever-increasing demand for bone regeneration. Various materials, including blocks, granules, and sponges, are developed for bone regeneration. However, blocks require troublesome shaping and exhibit poor bone-defect conformities; granules migrate into the surrounding tissues during and after filling of the defect, causing handling difficulties and complications; and sponges contain polymers that are subject to religious restrictions, lack osteoconductivity, and may cause inflammation and allergies.

In a globally aging society, synthetic bone blocks are in increasing demand. An ideal synthetic bone block fuses early with bone and is replaced with new bone at a suitable speed while withstanding the weight load. Herein, we report carbonate apatite honeycomb (HC) blocks with superior mechanical strength, osteoconductivity, and bioresorbability compared to a clinically used synthetic porous block (control block).

Antigene methods are promising novel therapeutic approaches to suppress abnormal gene expression. One of these methods inhibits transcription by forming triplex DNA against duplex DNA. However, by using natural-type triplex-forming oligonucleotides (TFOs), stable triplex formation is limited to homopurine and homopyrimidine strands in targeted duplex DNA.

The aging population has rapidly driven the demand for bone regeneration. The pore structure of a scaffold is a critical factor that affects its mechanical strength and bone regeneration. Triply periodic minimal surface gyroid structures similar to the trabecular bone structure are considered superior to strut-based lattice structures (e.

This study presents a simple strategy for the sequestration of globular proteins as clients into synthetic polypeptide-based complex coacervates as a scaffold, thereby recapitulating the scaffold-client interaction found in biological condensates. Considering the low net charges of scaffold proteins participating in biological condensates, the linear charge density () on the polyanion, polyethylene glycol--poly(aspartic acids), was reduced by introducing hydroxypropyl or butyl moieties as a charge-neutral pendant group. Complex coacervate prepared from the series of reduced- polyanions and the polycation, homo-poly-l-lysine, could act as a scaffold that sequestered various globular proteins with high encapsulation efficiency (>80%), which sometimes involved further agglomerations in the coacervates.

Developing nanovehicles for delivering antibiotics is a promising approach to overcome the issue of antibiotic resistance. This study aims to utilize a polyion complex (PICs) system for developing novel nanovehicles for polymyxin-type antibiotics, which are known as last resort drugs. The formation of antibiotic-based PIC nanostructures is investigated using colistimethate sodium (CMS), an anionic cyclic short peptide, and a series of block catiomers bearing different amounts of guanidinium moieties on their side chains.

Strategies that combine chemotherapies with unconventional agents such as nitric oxide (NO) have been shown to enhance cancer therapies. Compared with small molecule chemotherapy drugs, nanosized particles have improved therapeutic efficacies and reduced systemic side effects because of the enhanced permeability and retention effect. In this report, we prepared PEGylated liposomes (LP) that incorporated l-arginine (Arg) and the anticancer drug doxorubicin (Dox) to yield a co-delivery system (Dox-Arg-LP).

Amarogentin (AG) is a naturally occurring secoiridoid glycoside produced mainly in the plant genera and . Extracts of these plants have a long history of use in Japan as bitter stomachics because of their strong bitterness. Because the AG content directly reflects the potential activity of the extract, the quality control of these plant extracts through the quantitative analysis of AG is important.

Purpose: We aimed to explore the temporal stability of radiomic features in the presence of tumor motion and the prognostic powers of temporally stable features.
Methods: We selected single fraction dynamic electronic portal imaging device (EPID) (n = 275 frames) and static digitally reconstructed radiographs (DRRs) of 11 lung cancer patients, who received stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) under free breathing. Forty-seven statistical radiomic features, which consisted of 14 histogram-based features and 33 texture features derived from the graylevel co-occurrence and graylevel run-length matrices, were computed.

In this study, we propose a novel variable sample injection system based on full-loop injection, named the split-flow sample introduction system, for application in supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). In this system, the mobile phase is split by the differential pressure between two back pressure regulators (BPRs) after full-loop injection suitable for SFC, and this differential pressure determines the introduction rate. Nine compounds with a wide range of characteristics were introduced with high reproducibility and universality, confirming that a robust variable sample injection system was achieved.

Signaling networks are made up of limited numbers of molecules and yet can code information that controls different cellular states through temporal patterns and a combination of signaling molecules. In this study, we used a data-driven modeling approach, the Laguerre filter with partial least square regression, to describe how temporal and combinatorial patterns of signaling molecules are decoded by their downstream targets. The Laguerre filter is a time series model used to represent a nonlinear system based on Volterra series expansion.
