Technical Feasibility and Early Clinical Outcome of Biportal Endoscopic Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion Using Larger Cage.

World Neurosurg

October 2023

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Kyungpook National University Hospital, Kyungpook National University School of Medicine, Daegu, South Korea. Electronic address:

Background: Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion with biportal endoscopic guidance (BE-TLIF) has been previously reported with promising clinical results. However, complications such as delayed union or subsidence occurred as with open surgery. We assumed using larger cages would result in less occurrence of such complications.

Article Synopsis
  • Machine learning (ML) algorithms have been developed to enhance the predictive accuracy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk among patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) receiving antiviral therapy (AVT).
  • A study used a training cohort of 960 patients to create an ML model predicting HCC development within 5 years, which was subsequently validated with a separate group of 1937 patients.
  • The new ML model outperformed existing risk prediction models, achieving a higher area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC) and demonstrating significant differences in HCC development among identified risk groups.

Background: We investigated the effects of sevoflurane exposure on the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP), expression and ablation of natural killer group 2, member D (NKG2D) ligands (UL16-binding proteins 1-3 and major histocompatibility complex class I chain-related molecules A/B), and natural killer (NK) cell-mediated cytotoxicity in breast cancer cells.

Methods: Three human breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7, MDA-MB-453, and HCC-70) were incubated with 0 (control), 600 (S6), or 1200 μM (S12) sevoflurane for 4 h. The gene expression of NKG2D ligands and their protein expression on cancer cell surfaces were measured using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and flow cytometry, respectively.

Inhibition of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4 ameliorates kidney ischemia-reperfusion injury by reducing succinate accumulation during ischemia and preserving mitochondrial function during reperfusion.

Kidney Int

October 2023

Research Institute of Aging and Metabolism, Kyungpook National University School of Medicine, Daegu, Republic of Korea; Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine, Kyungpook National University, Kyungpook National University Hospital, Daegu, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury is a major cause of acute kidney injury (AKI) and is linked to succinate accumulation, which leads to harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS) and severe kidney damage.
  • Research on PDK4, a mitochondrial enzyme, shows that knocking it out or inhibiting it reduces IR-induced kidney damage by lowering succinate levels and ROS production during reperfusion.
  • The study concludes that targeting PDK4 could be an effective way to prevent kidney injury during IR events by minimizing succinate accumulation and protecting mitochondrial function.

Below-Knee Prosthetic Bypass Is a Viable Option for Limb Salvage in Patients with Extensive Femoropopliteal Occlusive Disease.

Vasc Specialist Int

June 2023

Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Department of Surgery, Kyungpook National University Chilgok Hospital, Kyungpook National University School of Medicine, Daegu, Korea.

Purpose: This study aimed to (1) evaluate the outcomes of below-knee prosthetic bypass (BKPB) in the absence of the great saphenous vein, and (2) identify risk factors associated with these outcomes.

Materials And Methods: This study included 37 consecutive patients who underwent BKPB with or without distal modification between 2010 and 2022. We further assessed the following treatment outcomes: primary patency (PP), secondary patency (SP), limb salvage (LS), and amputation-free survival (AFS) rates.

Background: Neoadjuvant treatment is recommended for large GISTs due to their friability and risk of extensive operations; however, studies on the indications and long-term results of this approach are lacking.

Methods: Patients with large (≥ 10 cm) gastric GISTs were enrolled from multiple centers in Korea and Japan after a pathologic confirmation of c-KIT ( +) GISTs. Imatinib (400 mg/d) was given for 6-9 months preoperatively, and R0 resection was intended.

Article Synopsis
  • Robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy (RNSM) is a new technique for treating breast cancer and for risk-reducing mastectomy in high-risk women, but it requires specialized surgeons due to limited data on outcomes.
  • The Korea Robot-Endoscopy Minimal Access Breast Surgery Study Group (KoREa-BSG) has initiated a multicenter study called MARRES to gather data on surgical and patient-reported outcomes from RNSM procedures.
  • This study includes adult women at high risk of breast cancer and aims to evaluate surgical complications, long-term survival rates, and patient satisfaction, ultimately informing treatment decisions and advancing surgical techniques.

Development of an Angiography Guide Indicator for Stereotactic Radiosurgery for High Precision.

World Neurosurg

June 2023

Department of Neurosurgery, Kyungpook National University Hospital, Daegu, Republic of Korea; Department of Neurosurgery, Kyungpook National University School of Medicine, Daegu, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Background: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is effectively used for treating various cerebrovascular diseases, including arteriovenous malformations. As image-based surgery is the gold standard technique in SRS, the quality of stereotactic angiography images greatly influences the surgical approach for cerebrovascular diseases. Despite several studies in the relevant literature, research on auxiliary devices, including angiography indicators used for cerebrovascular disease surgeries, is limited.

The optimal surgical treatment for patients suffering from distractive flexion injury of the subaxial cervical spine with a locked facet (LF) is unknown. Closed reduction via an anterior or posterior approach is a treatment option for LF. We examined the surgical outcomes of patients treated for locked facet distractive flexion injury (LF-DFI) in this case series, with a particular emphasis on the surgical approach and reduction maneuver.

Rationale & Objective: The platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) is a marker of inflammation and a predictor of mortality in a variety of diseases. However, the effectiveness of PLR as a predictor of mortality in patients with severe acute kidney injury (AKI) is uncertain. We evaluated the association between the PLR and mortality in critically ill patients with severe AKI who underwent continuous kidney replacement therapy (CKRT).

Medicina (Kaunas)

April 2023

Department of Urology, Severance Hospital, Urological Science Institute, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul 03722, Republic of Korea.

: Ureteral stent insertion passively dilates the ureter. Therefore, it is sometimes used preoperatively before flexible ureterorenoscopy to make the ureter more accessible and facilitate urolithiasis passage, especially when ureteroscopic access has failed or when the ureter is expected to be tight. However, it may cause stent-related discomfort and complications.
