Estrogen deficiency leads to osteoporosis as a result of an imbalance in bone remodeling due to greater bone resorption. Estrogen deficiency increases the osteoclastic resorption of bone, and many of the FDA-approved therapies for osteoporosis are antiresorptive drugs that mainly act by reducing osteoclast activity. The mitochondrial enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase (PDK) is a critical regulator of aerobic glycolysis that exerts its effects by phosphorylating the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC), which is responsible for oxidative phosphorylation.

There has been a strong and urgent demand to diagnose community transmission-driven coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) after it crossed borders. A large number of rapid and accurate tests and diagnoses are required at drive-through test stations, community clinics and hospitals. Isothermal amplification technology, such as loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) and recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA), provides excellent alternatives for resource limited test environments.

We report the magnetic and magnetothermal properties of gadolinium silicide (GdSi) nanoparticles prepared by surfactant-assisted ball milling of arc melted bulk ingots of the compound. Using different milling times and speeds, a wide range of crystallite sizes (13-43 nm) could be produced and a reduction in Curie temperature ( ) from 340 K to 317 K was achieved, making these nanoparticles suitable for self-controlled magnetic hyperthermia applications.

SnO₂ thin-film gas sensors were easily created using the ion sputtering technique. The as-deposited SnO₂ thin films consist of a tetragonal SnO₂ phase and densely packed nanosized grains with diameters of approximately 20-80 nm, which are separated by microcracks. The as-deposited SnO₂ thin film is well crystallized, with a dense columnar nanostructure grown directly onto the alumina material and the Pt electrodes.

In this paper, we adopt the vertical core-shell nanowire field-effect transistors based on the Silicon-germanium (SiGe)/strained-silicon (strained-Si) layer as a method to improve the performance of the CMOS logic inverter by using technology computer aided design simulation. The lattice constant mismatch between the core region and the shell region causes the global strain of the Si region of the shell, which in turn changes the Si parameters. This phenomenon effects on the improvement the electrical characteristics in the -type MOSFET (MOSFET).

Three fluorene-labeled 2'-deoxyuridines that differ in terms of their linkers-U (without linker), U (with ethynyl linker), and U (with diethynyl linker)-have been introduced at the central positions of oligodeoxynucleotides to examine the effects that their linkers have on the fluorescence emission properties upon duplex formation with fully matched and single-base-mismatched targets. Here, we describe the influence of the linkers on the emission behavior, the intramolecular electron transfer between the fluorene moiety and the uracil base after photoexcitation, and the structural stability upon duplex formation. The probe containing the U residue (with an ethynyl linker) and cytosine residues as flanking bases exhibited the greatest fluorescence turn-on selective behavior toward the perfectly matched target.

Growing evidence indicates that dysregulation of immune response to the commensal microbiota involves the pathogenesis of IBD. Two Fe(ii)-based coordination polymers [Fe(tpmd)(NCS)]·5.5HO (1) and [Fe(tpmd)(NCSe)]·7HO (2) with the framework of square-grid type have been assembled from FeSO·7HO, ,,','-tetrakis(pyridin-4-yl)methanediamine (tpmd), and KNCS/KNCSe in methanol and characterized. By utilizing two pyridine groups of a tpmd ligand, 1 and 2 are formed in two-dimensional layered structures through coordination of octahedral iron(ii) ions with the tpmd to NCS/NCSe ligands in which they have a supramolecular isomorphous conformation.

Polypropylene (PP) foam offers superior thermal and mechanical properties and versatile applications. However, the linear structure of PP hinders the fabrication of a uniform and fine foam, owing to changes in the melt strength with variations in the temperature. The foamability of the material can be improved by fabricating modified PP by introducing long-chain branches by grafting and chain extension reactions, using glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and adipic acid (AA).

In this study, vertically stacked centimeter-scale multi-TMD (MoS/WS/WSe and MoS/WSe) thin films are successfully fabricated via sequential pulsed laser deposition (PLD), which is an in situ growth process. The fabricated MoS/WS/WSe thin film on p-type silicon (p-Si) substrate is designed to form multistaggered gaps (type-II band structure) with p-Si, and this film exhibits excellent spatial and thickness uniformity, which is verified by Raman spectroscopy.

The FeOOH nanorod shape was well maintained after conversion into ZFO-NR with the formation of porous structures. The nanorod structure and porous morphology facilitate Li transport, improve the reaction rates owing to the larger contact area with the electrolyte, and reduce the mechanical stress during lithiation/delithiation.

However, whether further shortening of symptom onset-to-door (O2D) time or D2B time would enhance survival of patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction remains unclear. Therefore, the current study aimed to evaluate the prognostic impact of O2D or D2B time in patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention.

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) develops in a subset of heavy drinkers (HDs). The goals of our study were to (1) characterize the global serum metabolomic changes in well-characterized cohorts of controls (Cs), HDs, and those with alcoholic cirrhosis (AC); (2) identify metabolomic signatures as potential diagnostic markers, and (3) determine the trajectory of serum metabolites in response to alcohol abstinence. Serum metabolic profiling was performed in 22 Cs, 147 HDs, and 33 patients with AC using ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Combined use of F-N-(3-fluoropropyl)-2β-carboxymethoxy-3β-(4-iodophenyl)nortropane (FP-CIT) for dopamine transporter imaging and F-fludeoxyglucose (FDG) for glucose metabolism shows good diagnostic performance for differential diagnosis of Parkinson disease (PD) and Parkinson plus syndrome (multiple system atrophy, progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal degeneration, and dementia with Lewy bodies). A recent study showed that F-FP-CIT positron emission tomography (PET) with early perfusion imaging is useful for the differential diagnosis of PD and Parkinson plus syndrome with lower radiation exposure, time, and cost. In this review, we summarize the advantages of using F-FP-CIT PET for perfusion and dopamine transporter imaging, as well as clinical features useful for the differential diagnosis of PD and Parkinson plus syndrome.

Herein, we examined the molecular mechanisms underlying suppression of tumor growth by globular adiponectin (gAcrp). We demonstrated that gAcrp suppressed B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) expression, an anti-apoptotic gene, by inducing its mRNA destabilization, which was accompanied with a decrease in cell viability and increased caspase-3 activity in hepatic cancer cells.
