Ionizing radiation (IR) has garnered growing attention because of its biological effects on aquatic organisms and humans. Here, we identify the most impacted organs and uncover the molecular mechanisms causing the changes in the context of vertebrate development using single-cell RNA sequencing. Alterations in cellular composition and biological functions were explored using transcriptomic profiling of zebrafish embryos exposed to 5 Gy.

Identifying patterns of metabolic heterogeneity in type 2 diabetes (T2D) can help in the development of optimal treatment strategies. We aimed to identify metabolic patterns in patients with T2D in the Republic of Korea and analyze the risk of developing diabetes-related complications according to patterns. We identified three distinct metabolic patterns and observed that each pattern was associated with a heightened risk of developing various cardiovascular diseases.

Background: Recently, cough reflex hypersensitivity has been proposed as a common underlying feature of chronic cough in adults. However, symptoms and clinical characteristics of cough hypersensitivity have not been studied amongst phenotypes of chronic cough. This study aimed to compare symptom features, such as cough triggers and associated throat sensations, of cough hypersensitivity in patients with asthmatic chronic cough and those with refractory chronic cough (RCC).

Background: Non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) is the most prevalent gastroesophageal reflux disease. Currently, proton pump inhibitors are the most commonly used treatment for NERD. Recently, the demand for herbal medicines with relatively few side effects is increasing and trials confirming the effectiveness and safety of herbal medicines for the treatment of NERD have been conducted.

Background: Intractable xerostomia is defined as the subjective perception of dry mouth and persistent salivary gland hypofunction. Pilocarpine is an approved salivary sialagogue that is frequently prescribed for the treatment of intractable xerostomia; however, it often exhibits more side effects at high-doses and limited effectiveness at low-doses. Baekhogainsam-Tang (BIT) is a common herbal formula used by patients complaining of sore throats and thirst.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the impact of microfractures generated within the footprint of the greater tuberosity (GT) on postoperative cuff healing following arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR).
Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients who underwent ARCR for full-thickness rotator cuff tear (FTRCT) between April 2020 and October 2023 at our institution. A total of 73 patients was categorized into two groups based on the presence of microfractures: a microfracture group (group M, n=33) and a non-microfracture group (group N, n=40).

Background: The quantification of mRNA expression in urinary sediments is a reliable biomarker for various diseases. However, few studies have investigated the clinical relevance of urinary mRNA levels in IgA nephropathy (IgAN). Thus, we investigated the expression of urinary mRNAs and their clinical significance in IgAN.

This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of the Noble and Underwood (NUn) score as a prognostic marker for overall survival (OS) in patients with stage I to IIIA non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The NUn score is a novel composite marker that integrates C-reactive protein (CRP), serum albumin (ALB) levels, and white blood cell (WBC) count to provide a comprehensive assessment of systemic inflammation and nutritional status. We included patients with stage I to IIIA NSCLC and assessed the NUn score, calculated using CRP, ALB levels, and WBC count.

Purpose: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is one of the most prevalent degenerative joint diseases worldwide. The herbal decoction, Dokhwalgisaeng-tang (DHGST), has been commonly used in East Asia to treat osteoarthritis. However, there is insufficient evidence to draw clear conclusions concerning its effectiveness and safety for patients with KOA.

The developed magnetic resonance electrical properties tomography (MREPT) techniques visualize the internal conductivity distribution at Larmor frequency by measuring the B1 transceive phase data. In biological tissues, electrical conductivity is influenced by ion concentrations and mobility. To visualize the anisotropic conductivity tensor of biological tissues, we use the Einstein-Smoluchowski equation, which links the diffusion coefficient to particle mobility.

Height gains result from longitudinal bone growth, which is largely dependent on chondrocyte differentiation and proliferation within the growth plates of long bones. The growth plate, that is, the epiphyseal plate, is divided into resting, proliferative, and hypertrophic zones according to chondrocyte characteristics. The differentiation potential of progenitor cells in the resting zone, continuous capacity for chondrocyte differentiation and proliferation within the proliferative zone, timely replacement by osteocytes, and calcification in the hypertrophic zone are the 3 main factors controlling longitudinal bone growth.

Background/objectives: Transforaminal endoscopic lumbar discectomy (TELD) under local anesthesia is a promising minimally invasive surgical option for intractable lumbar disc herniation (LDH). However, our understanding of access pain prediction during foraminal pathological procedures is limited. To our knowledge, no predictive rules for access pain have been established during TELD for foraminal or extraforaminal LDH.

Parkinson's disease is a heterogenous neurodegenerative disorder with a wide variety of motor and non-motor symptoms. This study used resting-state fMRI to identify the neural substrates of PD and explore the acute neural response to acupuncture stimulation in 74 participants (50 patients with PD and 24 healthy controls). All participants with PD were evaluated for the severity of symptoms using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale and Balance Master.

Background: Wearable devices can now leverage the established correlation between thyroid function and heart rate to monitor thyroid function alongside exercise levels and heart rate. The objective was to assess the cost-effectiveness of introducing a wearable/mobile-based thyroid function digital monitoring solution for the management of hypothyroidism compared to the conventional management approach.
Methods: A decision-analytic Markov state-transition simulation model employed for utilizing a simulated cohort of 10,000 40-year-old patients with hypothyroidism to estimate costs and health outcomes.
