The points of this presentation are reform of the theory relating to "Dysplasia and Carcinogenesis" and the cytological methods. In 1976, Meisels and Fortin reported that dysplasia is the disease caused by Human papilloma virus (HPV), and surprisingly, intermediate cells infected by HPV possessed the ability of proliferation and mitosis, resulting in binucleation and multinucleation. In cytology, dysplasia is thought to be delivered from basal cells and abnormal cells are differentiated from lower layer to upper layer, the grade of dysplasia is judged from the level of cell-differentiation.

Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) is expected to provide new optical information different from conventional microscopy in cell biology. CLSM provides high contrast images, individual continuous cellular tomograms without slicing cells, and stereographs which are observed by three dimensional reconstruction. We study the localization of nuclear DNA stained with PI, tumor marker antigen CA-125 stained with FITC, and signals in fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with alpha satellite pericentrometric DNA probe of chromosome 17 to discuss the possibility of its application to cell biology or clinical use.

Instruments utilized in flow cytometry are called flow cytometers and they can be classified into two kinds, namely, cell analyzers and cell sorters. Important technological developments related to the flow cytometer and various kinds of laboratory instruments are reviewed historically. Commercial cell sorters and cell analyzers produced by several companies are compared and the characteristics of each are listed.

Ultrafast computed tomography (UFCT) is a new diagnostic modality that includes not only imaging of cardiac structures, but also movement of cardiac muscles and valves. It can be useful in the evaluation of prosthetic valves, because the scan time is extremely short and whole cardiac structures are imaged with a slice thickness of 8 mm and within 7 cardiac cycles. We review our experience using UFCT to observe prosthetic valve function in 22 cases with various valvular diseases.

An early phase II multicentered study of YM 881 (zinostatin stimalamer) was conducted in 36 patients to investigate response and the safety of the drug in malignant tumors. The response could be evaluated in 18 patients, one with brain tumor, 2 with lung cancer, one with breast cancer, one with liver cancer, one with pancreatic cancer, 6 with gastric cancer, and 6 with colon cancer. PR was found in the patient with brain tumor.

This report is on the exfoliative cytologic criteria in the diagnoses of uterine cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancer. It is of special importance to establish a differential diagnosis between ectocervical and endometrial lesions when considering adenocarcinomas. Cytological evaluation of ovarian cancers were performed on stump smears from excised surfaces.
