Recent studies identified that low levels of tumor suppressor microRNAs in plasma/serum relate to tumor progression and poor outcomes in cancers. This study explored decreased tumor suppressor microRNA (miRNA) plasma levels in gastric cancer (GC) patients to clarify their potential as novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets. We focused on five candidates (miR-148a, miR-101, miR-129, miR-145 and miR-206) of tumor suppressor miRNAs in GC by a systematic review of NCBI database.

Postoperative complications contribute to recurrences and poor long-term outcomes for gastric cancer patients, especially among the elderly. However, the prognostic effect of postoperative complications on non-cancer-related death in elderly patients with gastric cancer has not been reported. Two hundred and twenty elderly (> 75 years of age) patients with stage I gastric cancer were retrospectively identified from consecutive admissions between 1995 and 2020.

A recent JCOG1104, OPAS-1 trial revealed the significance of S-1 duration. However, the significance of cumulative total S-1 dose (CTSD) remains unclear. In this study, we designed to evaluate the prognostic effect of CTSD on adjuvant chemotherapy after curative gastrectomy.

Background: The aim of this study was to compare the short- and long-term outcomes of laparoscopic total gastrectomy (LTG) with those of open total gastrectomy (OTG) for the upper part of clinical Stage I gastric cancer.

Methods: Between 2000 and 2015, 122 and 96 consecutive gastric cancer patients who had undergone curative LTG and OTG with lymphadenectomy were enrolled in the study. We performed the simple intracorporeal techniqueof esophagojejunostomy using a circular stapler in LTG.

Overexpression of YEATS4 contributes to malignant outcomes in gastric carcinoma.

Division of Digestive Surgery, Department of Surgery, Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine 465 Kajii-Cho, Kawaramachihirokoji, Kamigyo-Ku, Kyoto, Japan.

YEATS domain containing 4 (YEATS4) has functions of chromatin modification and transcriptional regulation and is in a gene-amplified region (12q13) in various human cancers. In this study, we tested whether YEATS4 acts as a cancer-promoting gene through its activation/overexpression in gastric cancer (GC). We analyzed 5 GC cell lines and 135 primary tumor samples of GC, which were curatively resected in our hospital.

Several studies have demonstrated that YWHAZ (14-3-3ζ), included in the 14-3-3 family of proteins, is implicated in the initiation and progression of cancers. To detect a novel treatment target for adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction (AEG), we tested whether YWHAZ acted as a cancer-promoting gene through its overexpression in AEG. We analyzed YWHAZ protein expression in 92 consecutive primary AEG tumors, which had been curatively resected in our institution between 2000 and 2010.

Only a few studies indentified the significance of circulating microRNAs in blood as a predictive biomarker for chemoresistance in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). In this study, we tested whether oncogenic miR-21 promoted chemoresistance in ESCC and served as a biomarker for predicting chemoresistance in plasma of patients with ESCC. All consecutive patients underwent the preoperative chemotherapy regimen (JCOG9907 trial) with cisplatin plus 5-fluorouracil.

Purpose: We examined the temperature of the intraventricular cerebrospinal fluid (Tv) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and those with multiple system atrophy (MSA) in comparison with healthy subjects, and we examined normal changes in this temperature with aging.

Methods: Tv was estimated by magnetic resonance (MR) diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) thermometry in 36 PD patients (19 males, 17 females), 34 MSA patients (17 males, 17 females), 64 age-matched controls (27 men, 37 women), and 114 all-age adult controls (47 men, 67 women; 28-89 years old). The volume of lateral ventricles was also estimated using FreeSurfer in all subjects.

Previous clinicopathological studies demonstrated that overexpression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is associated with a poor treatment response of esophageal carcinoma. The aim of this study was to elucidate the role of COX-2 overexpression in the chemosensitivity of esophageal carcinoma cells. TE13 human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma cells were transfected with a COX-2 constitutive expression vector, and stable transfectants overexpressing COX-2 were established.

The effectiveness of lymphangiography as a treatment method for various chyle leakages.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of lymphangiography as a treatment for various chyle leakages. Pedal lymphangiography was performed in 9 patients (6 men and 3 women; mean age, 59 years) who were unlikely to be cured only by conservative treatment - a low-fat medium-chain triglyceride diet, total parenteral nutrition and insertion of a drainage tube - and in whom chylothorax (n = 5), chylous ascites (n = 2) and lymphatic fistulae (n = 2) were refractory to conservative treatment. In 7 of these 9 patients (78%), we could detect the chyle leakage sites.

Purpose: For therapeutic effectiveness of repeated hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) for unresectable advanced liver malignancies, distribution of anticancer drugs via an indwelling catheter should be uniform throughout the entire liver. It was investigated how an extrahepatic artery entering the posterior segment or caudate lobe of the liver influences performance of repeated HAIC.

Materials And Methods: One hundred ninety-five patients with unresectable advanced liver cancer underwent placement of a percutaneously implantable port-catheter system and were followed arteriographically with and without computed tomography (CT).

[Six cases of thymic carcinoma: a clinical review].

Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine 465, Kajii-cho, Kawaramachi-Hirokoji, Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto-city, Japan.

Thymic carcinoma is rarer than thymoma and carries a very poor prognosis. No standard treatment has yet been established. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are usually given to patients in whom surgery is not indicated.
