Recent studies identified that low levels of tumor suppressor microRNAs in plasma/serum relate to tumor progression and poor outcomes in cancers. This study explored decreased tumor suppressor microRNA (miRNA) plasma levels in gastric cancer (GC) patients to clarify their potential as novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets. We focused on five candidates (miR-148a, miR-101, miR-129, miR-145 and miR-206) of tumor suppressor miRNAs in GC by a systematic review of NCBI database.

A recent JCOG1104, OPAS-1 trial revealed the significance of S-1 duration. However, the significance of cumulative total S-1 dose (CTSD) remains unclear. In this study, we designed to evaluate the prognostic effect of CTSD on adjuvant chemotherapy after curative gastrectomy.

YEATS domain containing 4 (YEATS4) has functions of chromatin modification and transcriptional regulation and is in a gene-amplified region (12q13) in various human cancers. In this study, we tested whether YEATS4 acts as a cancer-promoting gene through its activation/overexpression in gastric cancer (GC). We analyzed 5 GC cell lines and 135 primary tumor samples of GC, which were curatively resected in our hospital.

Several studies have demonstrated that YWHAZ (14-3-3ζ), included in the 14-3-3 family of proteins, is implicated in the initiation and progression of cancers. To detect a novel treatment target for adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction (AEG), we tested whether YWHAZ acted as a cancer-promoting gene through its overexpression in AEG. We analyzed YWHAZ protein expression in 92 consecutive primary AEG tumors, which had been curatively resected in our institution between 2000 and 2010.

Only a few studies indentified the significance of circulating microRNAs in blood as a predictive biomarker for chemoresistance in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). In this study, we tested whether oncogenic miR-21 promoted chemoresistance in ESCC and served as a biomarker for predicting chemoresistance in plasma of patients with ESCC. All consecutive patients underwent the preoperative chemotherapy regimen (JCOG9907 trial) with cisplatin plus 5-fluorouracil.

Purpose: We examined the temperature of the intraventricular cerebrospinal fluid (Tv) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and those with multiple system atrophy (MSA) in comparison with healthy subjects, and we examined normal changes in this temperature with aging.
Methods: Tv was estimated by magnetic resonance (MR) diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) thermometry in 36 PD patients (19 males, 17 females), 34 MSA patients (17 males, 17 females), 64 age-matched controls (27 men, 37 women), and 114 all-age adult controls (47 men, 67 women; 28-89 years old). The volume of lateral ventricles was also estimated using FreeSurfer in all subjects.

Previous clinicopathological studies demonstrated that overexpression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is associated with a poor treatment response of esophageal carcinoma. The aim of this study was to elucidate the role of COX-2 overexpression in the chemosensitivity of esophageal carcinoma cells. TE13 human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma cells were transfected with a COX-2 constitutive expression vector, and stable transfectants overexpressing COX-2 were established.
